I agree they are still a top contender, but I don’t think it was the middle finger. I believe they worked on a re-worked deal and couldn’t come up with the numbers Carr was seeking. That would leave them no choice but to explore his market openly. The Saints numbers could still end up being the best numbers, but Carr probably has an idea of his market value.

Most starting QBs never get to see free agency. Carr was never going to accept a trade anywhere.

Raiders inform Derek Carr he’ll be released

Derek Carr and the Raiders are breaking up on Valentine’s Day.

If Carr was on the Raiders roster at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, $40.4 million of his remaining compensation would have become fully guaranteed. The Raiders have avoided that by releasing him.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Raiders have informed Carr of that decision. That will free up over $29 million in cap space for the Raiders and puts Carr on the open market a month ahead of the start of the new league year.

Carr visited the Saints last week as the Raiders tried to find a way to trade Carr before the deadline, but there wasn’t any reason for Carr to agree to be traded rather than become a free agent. He’ll now be free to sign with any team immediately.

The Saints could be a possible landing spot and the Panthers, Jets, and Buccaneers are other teams that could be in the market for a veteran this offseason.

Somebody pissed of Aaron Rodgers... I like it.

    per; PFT

Super Sunday’s Sunday Splash! reports included an item from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media that Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers planned to start his voluntary solitary confinement on Monday.

It didn’t happen. As evidenced by the fact that Rodgers was in the daylight on Tuesday, doing his weekly paid spot with Pat McAfee and former Green Bay teammate A.J. Hawk. Rodgers took some time to call out those who have, in his view, reported erroneous facts about him.

“There’s an inner circle and in my inner circle, nobody talks to Ian Rapoport [or] Adam Schefter or to any of those people,” Rodgers said, via Chris Mason of MassLive.com. “Just stop with the fake news. I speak for myself and I will continue to do that.

“I have no problem with Ian Rapoport, [Adam] Schefter, I think they’re really good at their jobs. When it comes to me, they don’t know shit. They really don’t. They don’t have people in my inner circle who are sources. I can promise you that. Anybody who would talk to them is not in my inner circle. It’s that simple. So I’ve had this plan on the books for four months, for the same time. When someone like that goes on and says something that’s not true it creates a story that’s [expletive].” (Usually, the expletive is obvious, and we’ll add the actual word. For this one, I’d just be guessing from three or four possible choices.)

It’s unclear why Schefter was mentioned. He didn’t report that Rodgers was about to lock himself in a closet for 96 hours. Schefter’s reports of late regarding Rodgers haven’t broken much actual ground beyond the things Rodgers has said himself, or that were otherwise obvious. For example, Schefter reported there’s a “very real possibility” that Rodgers will be traded days after Rodgers’s comments to McAfee and Hawk made it obvious that a trade is indeed a very real possibility.

“How many [expletive] narratives can come from one [appearance last week] where they didn’t even actually listen to what I said?” Rodgers added. “Or the intent? Or the tone? And again, nothing against Rapoport, but he doesn’t have anybody who knows legitimately what’s going on in my life. So for him to say something, ‘Monday through Thursday I was supposed to be in there,’ that was never the plan. It hasn’t been the plan for four months. So don’t make [expletive] up. I don’t have your number, you’re not gonna have my number, you do a great job, but not when it comes to my life, so stop talking about it.”

There’s a difference between creating or construing narratives and reporting facts. Rapoport reported a fact. And he surely got the information from a source that he believes was in the right position to know it was accurate.

Hell, we can’t rule out the possibility that Rodgers was sufficiently upset that the information got out from the inner circle of his inner circles that he changed his plans, if only to make the report look erroneous. It definitely would not be the first time the subject of a report pivoted to a new approach once the prior one came to light, whether for spite or some actual strategic reason.

Regardless, Rodgers needs to realize that he can’t have fame and attention on his own terms. If he’s going to regularly speak to the world about his thoughts and plans, others will try to find out more about them. Others will talk about them, possibly seizing on narratives that Rodgers didn’t intend, because not everyone will accurately solve the beautiful mysteries he tries to build.

So, Aaron, if you want us to stop talking about you, there’s one specific thing you can do to achieve that objective.

Of the 4 teams mentioned here as possible spots, I think the Saints have the most to offer as far as putting a team around him. But watch the buckets of money fly around!

Could be at least 5 kicking the tires... Panthers, Jets, Saints, Commanders and Buccaneers. Im curious what kind of attention he will draw, he sure had a healthy payload in Vegas and teams might be leery on paying him a boatload? He's actually in a real good position as far as bargaining and picking a team.

FWIW - Earlier today, PointsBet updated their board. The Panthers are the favorites at +140, with the Saints (a team Carr visited last week) at +150.

Next are the Jets at +275, with the Buccaneers at +800, the Commanders at +1400, the Patriots at +1400, the Titans at +1800, the Colts at +2000, the Falcons at +2000, the Packers at +2000, and the Texans at +4000.

Normally, when it comes to Rodgers, I would agree 100%. In this case though, he was on a show that he frequents almost weekly. It isn't like he called a press conference(or even asked to be a special one time only guest in order to bring it up) to shun the press, he basically called out a couple of reporters on a podcast. Really not a big deal. This podcast isn't a part of the requirements that the NFL hands down to players, etc. I don't really take issue with a player calling out BS, when they have that type of an outlet, that he frequents. I get hating on a rival QB... If Lamar did this, I'd hate it too..

Sam Darnold and Marcus Mariota are two other potential candidates worth noting.

Darnold is a pending free agent. Once he was back healthy, he took over the starting role as Mayfield's replacement and showed he really can be a starting QB. (He went 4-2 with a 92.6 passer rating - on a team that had gone 3-8 before he took over.) Surprising wrinkle: new QB coach Josh McCown actually played with Darnold with the Jets in 2018, so there's still a chance that there will be a push within the Panthers organization to resign him.

Mariota has been a near certain cap casualty since the day he signed with Atlanta. I think the Falcons will be open to resigning him on a more suitable deal for a backup role, but the Raiders know him well and might offer him the opportunity to compete for the starting role.

Darnold in Carolina makes sense. I would still expect them to draft one if the right candidate becomes a workable option. Regardless, they will want a veteran presence to, at the very least, start the year.

Can Todd Monken Take Ravens QB Lamar Jackson to New Level?

The Baltimore Ravens have a new offensive coordinator in the form of Georgia Bulldogs wizard Todd Monken. After overseeing back-to-back national championships, Monken is taking his talents back to the NFL ... and Lamar Jackson.

In what has been lauded as a superb move by the Ravens, Monken is now seen as the man who can take Jackson and his current skill set to new heights according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.

    "New heights."

That has to excite Ravens fans.

With an MVP in his back pocket, Jackson has been one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL, which is why the hire of Monken fits so well ... at least on paper.

The Bulldogs averaged an eye-watering 39.8 points per game under Monken while also having a superbly balanced offense that saw Georgia rush for 200 yards per game while throwing for 273.

With a player like Jackson, that feels like a recipe for success. Not to mention what Monken was able to do with Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett.

From a walk-on to a Heisman Trophy finalist, that growth will undoubtedly have Ravens fans excited about what Monken can do with Lamar.

The thought of Monken potentially leveling up Jackson at the quarterback position could be scary. Last season Jackson had his lowest completion percentage (62.3), passing yards (2,242), passing attempts (326), and rushing yards per game (63.7) since his rookie year. The only way is up, right?

Is Monken the man to fix Lamar and get him back to the MVP version that sliced and diced through the league?

    Ravens fans sure hope so.
