i also think goose is right on his "nerds are ruining baseball " comment. i am not a sabermetrics guy. i see people at face value. if you wanna scout joe smith - go to portland and see him. what can a computer tell you versus a live look at him. the movie trouble with the curve with clint eastwood clearly points this out. i said it before - sports illustrated had a copy of the scouting report on usc pitcher tom seaver. it was 5-6 categories and a grade next to each category and notes. that's it. 1 piece of paper. who is tom seaver? some guy with over 320 wins and a few cy young awards. no computer to tell his whip or war or any of that other crapola.

Anthony Rizzo doubles twice, Cubs beat Reds 7-4 John Lackey, making his first start of spring training, gave up three runs and five hits in three innings for the Cubs. He walked one and struck out four. Lackey said the plan was for him to throw two innings, but he tossed so few pitches that he decided to go for a third inning. "The first two innings, I just threw a bunch of fastballs," he said. "I'm just trying to work on my arm strength. The third inning, I mixed in a few more things." Reds starter Robert Stephenson, a first-round pick in 2011, went three innings and gave up three hits and two runs. Cubs catcher Miguel Montero hit his second homer of the spring, a two-run blast in the fourth that broke a 3-3 tie. Backup catcher Tim Federowicz added a homer in the bottom of the eighth. Jose Peraza went 3 for 4 with a homer for the Reds. Adam Duvall hit a single that scored two runs in the third for the Reds. DH Dan Vogelbach hit a solo shot for the Cubs in the second inning.
McCutchen gets 2nd spring hit, a solo homer, in Pirates win BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) ? Andrew McCutchen got just his second hit of the spring ? a long solo home run ? and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied for a 4-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. Leading off the fourth inning, McCutchen ripped a line drive to left off Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi. It was McCutchen's second hit in 15 plate appearances. "I'll be ready to go," McCutchen said. "I've been ready to go." Odorizzi gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three in 3 1/3 innings. The Pirates scored three runs in the eighth with Gift Ngoepe's two-out, RBI single giving them the lead. Taylor Motter, a Rays infield prospect who hit 14 homers last season at Triple-A Durham, tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a blast off Tony Watson. In the sixth, Motter's two-out double scored Curt Casali.
?What does this kid know? This kid doesn't know squat about the game, and [has] no respect for it,? Gossage said with audible disgust. ?Here he is making millions of frickin' dollars; that's great. I'm happy for all the players and all the money that they're making, because it's hard-earned by all the players that came before these guys. Ninety percent of these guys never went through a strike, a work stoppage. They don't know the blood sweat and tears that has been spent on what these guys are making. All we wanted was a piece of the pie. Marvin Miller did that, Curt Flood, from on up. My career started out on the first strike in 1972, and it ended in the last one in 1994, when we lost a World Series, which should have never happened, but it did. ? We fought for everything these players are getting. So let me tell Bryce Harper something: go look at the history, figure it out and quit acting like a fool.?
Arrieta strong in Cubs' 10-2 loss to Padres MESA, Ariz. (AP) ? The Cubs' Jake Arrieta struck out five batters in four innings of work and left with the game tied 1-1 before San Diego got to Chicago's bullpen for a 10-2 win Monday. The reigning Cy Young winner had a solid second outing, allowing two hits, one earned run and two walks. He also had a chance to work on getting out of trouble. "I wanted to pitch with guys on base," the right-hander said. "I wanted to work out of the stretch with good timing and tempo."
Sandoval homers, but Pirates beat Red Sox 3-1 FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) ? Pablo Sandoval hit his first home run of the spring and Dustin Pedroia had two hits for the Red Sox on Monday in Boston's 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off left-hander Brian Johnson, who left the game with a sprained left big toe. Pittsburgh right-hander Ryan Vogelsong went four innings, giving up one run on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. The only run he allowed was Sandoval's homer with one out in the second. "Pablo got me there. I've seen him hit that ball plenty of times," said Vogelsong, who was teammates with Sandoval in San Francisco. "He probably knew I was going up there. I knew I was going up there. It was just a matter of if I was going to get it by him or not."
who cares about sandoval? the phils makail franco hit his 6 hr of spring training, which leads all players.
Will-if he didn't get beaned last year and broke his wrist he was right up there for ROY with Kris Bryant and at 1 point had more HRs than Bryant! Don't pass on this kid. He's the real deal!
here's why - after this year - they are done with all the bad contracts and will buy howard's last year out. so with their new owner - they will buy players as they have a ton of money and no long commitments. they are the new red sox and yankees! their 3b is leading all players in spring training with 6 hrs. he's a beast. if he didn't break his wrist last year- he contends for the ROY vs Bryant. their future SS JP Crawford is a stud as well and coming up this year. He's top 5 rated of all minor leaguers. they got back 9 players for Giles and Hamels! Some may make the team this year. In 2017 - more will make it and contribute. Some are supposed to be solid. If half work out, look out. 2018 is a monster f/a class. the biggest in history - harper, kershaw, mccutchen and others. so they will be buyers! the new ownership and front office are making huge moves to right the wrongs of that dope amaro. and don't forget they have the #1 pick this year and the first selection in the foreign players pool. plus they own the rights to the cuban phenom j. ortiz too. the basement will be an afterthought !
