what? Swanson too? wow. Miller isnt worth all of that. No offense. Braves robbed them. I don't even think Miller is an ace.
I really wanted Miller for the Cubs. But he didn't have to be the ace of the Cubs. Just a 3 or good 4. I know nothing about this guy the Cubs got for Castro.
24 year old threw over 200 innings with a 3.02 ERA and hasn't hit arb yet, that's worth A LOT. You're right though, to give 2 major leaguers and the #1 overall pick from less than 6 months ago is robbery. Good for the Braves, traded 1 year of Heyward and 2 years of Walden for Shelby and a prospect and then flipped Shelby for those guys. Huge haul for them.
Andrew Miller had a great year as a closer last year. Converted 36 if 38 saves last year with a 2.04 ERA in 61.2 innings. He's 30 and hadn't had much success prior to that. Could be a really good piece if he's figured it out, you guy need relief pitchers.
CHICAGO -- One of the lures for free agents signing with the Cubs has been the desire to be on the team that wins the World Series and ends the century-plus drought. Apparently, Jason Heyward wants to be on that team. The free-agent outfielder has agreed to join the Cubs on an eight-year contract worth $184 million with two opt-outs, the first being after the 2018 season, according to multiple reports Friday. Heyward can reportedly opt out of his deal after the third year or the fourth year if he exceeds certain plate appearance threshholds. The club would not comment on or confirm the reports. ? Cubs Hot Stove Tracker Heyward, 26, fills a large gap in center field, replacing Dexter Fowler, who is a free agent. In addition, he is an attractive fit at Wrigley Field, where he's batted .311 (28-for-90) with four home runs, five doubles and 13 RBIs in 25 games. (MLB.com)
$184M for a guy with almost identical career numbers to Neil Walker. Really glad the Cards didn't sign that contract, I'd rather have a number of guys at the prices they'll go.
Career slash lines of notable free agents in this class: Jason Heyward: .268/.353.431 Justin Upton: .271/.352/.473 Alex Gordon: .269/.348/.435 Yoenis Cespedes: .271/.319/.486 Chris Davis: .255/.330/.506 Of these 5, Heyward has the 2nd lowest average, best OBP (almost identical to Upton and Gordon), and lowest SLG. I love the defense and all, but I don't value corner OF defense all that highly, so I don't see why Heyward would be worth all that much more than any of the others. His age is a pus, but Upton is only 2 years older, Chris Davis isn't yet 30, Cespedes just turned 30, and Gordon isn't looking for an extremely long contract.
2nd most shocking move of the offseason, Michael Cuddyer has retired. He's under contract for $12.5M for 2016 that he will forfeit. Hell, at least show up and fake an injury for that cash.
