MLB - NEWS & NOTES

Discussion in 'MLB General Discussion Board' started by Willie, Mar 7, 2015.

  1. the tigers used a two and a half man rotation in the 1968 world series. denny mclain and mickey lolich each started 3 games. mclain pitched game 6 on 2 days rest, same with lolich in game 7. the half man was earl wilson, who started game 3.

something tells me we won't ever see anything like that again.

i thought doubleheaders were on saturdays as sunday is a travel day in some cases?

the last few years at the vet, the phils had them in august? yuck. hot as balls down there for 2 games!

cubs win. Arrieta was the damn Terminator out there. He even got hit and wanted to rumble!

why the hell are 2 games tomorrow in the afternoon? one game is a noon start? why?

  3. Guys also didn't throw as hard or with as much movement.

Pure bulls$%t. No one threw harder than Nolan Ryan. No one had more movement on a ball than Steve Carlton had on his slider. These guys and others like Gibson and Seaver and Palmer also didn't have layers upon layers of relief specialists and set-up men taking over for them in the 6th inning.

  5. amen, axe, and let's not forget bob feller. he was throwing over 100 mph in the 1930s.

Feller NEVER gets his due. I read one article where a HOFer who faced him at the plate (forget who?) said he was the best pitcher of his era......

Mets 2B Tejada suffers broken leg on controversial slide by Dodgers' Utley

Here's my question; If you cant have a play at the plate collision, shouldnt take-out slides at 2nd be band?

Many times a player running to 2nd base has to duck the throw to 1st base. So no, keep it the way it is.....

But i thought the issue was safety. Utley broke a guy's leg and how far out of the base path is allowable?

Growing up in the game at all levels... if you leave the base path/line, your out.

    Todays Playoff Schedule...

    KC @ HOU - 4:10pm

    TOR @ TEX - 8:10pm

  16. Radar guns used to measure from the point of release and not the average speed to the plate which inflated mph. Average fastball mph league wide is still higher than ever.

I'd have to see another replay. I didn't think he was that far away to where his hand couldn't have touched 2nd base. The main reason he was hurt was because he had is back towards Utley. Let's not forget that Jung Ho Kang of the Pirates also had his leg broken, but for a different reason. Because he didn't jump up with the player bearing down on him when I thought he had time to do so. Don't ask me why he didn't jump but I thought it was a legal play.....He will jump next time! I think the ump decided he was close enough to 2nd base which is why no foul was called. Joe Torre is supposed review it and decide if there's any punishment.....But from what I saw, it was legal. I will be surprised if theres any suspension or fine.....

  18. Utley suspended 2 games, which I view as more of a PR move than anything else.

As igloo said, he got hurt because he turned his back. You never, ever, ever turn your back to a runner. The rule states you have to close enough to the bag to be able to touch it, which he clearly could have.

  19. FoxSports1 just showed 4 or 5 slides so within the last week that were all very similar, the only difference is that only 1 fielder didn't clear the bag. Donaldson, Napoli, or Odor all slid into guys past the bag too, Tejada happened to get hurt and that makes Utley worse than those guys because that's how PR works.

This reminds me a lot of the Posey play a few years back. He got hurt because he was in poor fundamental position and everyone freaked out about how you shouldn't be able to run into catchers. Kang doesn't clear the bag (poor fundamental position) and Tejada turns his back the runner (poor fundamental position) and get hurt, now everyone wants to vilify take out slides.
