... and if they tanked... its wrong and i am dead set against it.

I don't think they tanked Will. I don't believe they had the worst record. They got lucky with a less % of picks in the jar with their name on it.....

igloo--papelbon had quality pitches and speed this year. i think he plays for a while as he's healthy and has no signs of slowing down. utley is on his last legs.

and will -- have you seen the phils lately? chrikey man. they got a ton of young kids in the lineup. i don't like their 2b and ss. thank God JP Crawford is taking over at SS in 16 or 17. they have skill but no power. they're all slap hitters.

like the nfl - you can trade that #1 pick and help your team out even more. Will the phils need a boatload of help bf 2017 when the money is off the books. I want every draft pick and aid i can get my grubby little hands on! i want that pick!

For the first time since 1992, the Pirates are 27 games over .500

    *BRAVO* *YAHOO* *DANCE* *DRINK*

And at this time, the Cards are on a historical season *REF*

  6. You can't trade draft picks in baseball.

  7. Also, igloo is right, Buffalo tanked and had the worst record in hockey, they wound up with the #2 pick though.

  8. to infer that only the team with the worst record could have tanked would be... silly. tanking is like winning - some teams are better at it than others.

  9. This is a fair point.

Also, this season is valuable experience for young players in the Phillies organization.

  10. The Cardinals just reached 35 games over .500 for the first time since 2005, so maybe ours isn't quite as historic (2004 Cards finished 48 games over .500).

i think i saw Bartman and the Billy goat at Wrigley last week.....

  14. Honestly I don't think the difference between the #1 and #5 pick means much in baseball. Comparing them in the 2000 decade:

    2000:
    #1 Adrian Gonzalez
    #5 Justin Wayne

    2001:
    #1 Joe Mauer
    #5 Mark Teixeira

    2002:
    #1 Bryan Bullington
    #5 Clint Everts

    2003:
    #1 Delmon Young
    #5 Chris Lubanski

    2004:
    #1 Matt Bush
    #5 Mark Rogers

    2005:
    #1 Justin Upton
    #5 Ryan Braun

    2006:
    #1 Luke Hochevar
    #5 Brandon Morrow

    2007:
    #1 David Price
    #5 Matt Wieters

    2008:
    #1 Timothy Beckham
    #5 Buster Posey

    2009:
    #1 Stephen Strasburg
    #5 Matt Hobgood

There's a lot of guys on that list who were wasted picks.

All stars by draft pick in that time:
    1: 6 all-stars
    2: 6 all-stars
    3: 1 all-star
    4: 1 all-star
    5: 4 all-stars
    6: 2 all-stars
    7: 3 all-stars
    8: 0 all-stars
    9: 0 all-stars
    10: 3 all-stars

Kinda sums things up nicely... good work, Tigers.

who the hell are justin wayne and tim beckham? ouch. in some cases it's even. in some cases as 2000, 2008, and 2003; i never heard or seen those guys ever before or ever again.

in my 2 mil drive home from work, the philly sports talk radio talk about draft -- with the phils winning, now they are so many teams close to them from #2 to #8 or something like that, so will and mut it has the potential to be A NOT TOP 5 PICK NOW. They listed 7-9 teams close to the phils in record and who they play against in the next 6 weeks and some of those teams were on it. CAnnot allow the Marlins or Braves to get that pick ahead of you or half those other teams - cincy, colorado, oakland and milwaukee.

I feel sorry for the fans of Philly if they pay to see a team tank or want their team to tank... i dont get it.

  18. igloofn68 Guest

The young guys the Phils call up are going to want to show their wares, so they are going to try their hardest to make the the team for next season. When your not in the playoff picture, thats what teams do and this is the time to do it when theres nothing to play for. They are not going to tank for a higher pick of a guy they don't even know.......The only way to really tank is for the FO to call up players that shouldn't be called up.......

As far as the draft goes, it's almost like the NHL. It's very difficult to pick players after the 1st 8 or so, imo,,,,,,

will-the current phils team was never meant to win. it's not tanking! they were picked to be dead last by every baseball writer in amercia. why win and rock that boat? just finish where you belong. getting out of the top 5 or 10 destroys this club and their future - not helps it.

no one tanks besides the oilers lately and lighting for stamkos. the phils are trying new things etc, but once i saw the standings, i couldn't believe how many teams are almost as bad as the phils are. that's what scares me. they could be out of the top 8 with 5 more wins!!

    Disagree.

    Totally disagree.

IF this is true and a reference to losing games delibrately - its wrong...
