any team that practices 10 hrs a day, every weekend and national holidays for 6 months straight is like a machine and reminds me of the CCCP Russian Hockey teams of the 60's, 70's and 80's! They're way too good!

I saw some kid from NC lying on the ground and looking in dire pain in the 3rd place game. Didn't see what actually happened to him. Hope he's ok. It could be a broken leg...

Phillies 1b/OF Rhys Hoskins does it again! He hits another HR! His 11th in less than 50 At-bats in his MLB debut month--a new record! He's been up for 2-3 weeks and has 11 HRs. Wow. Tommy Joseph who ?

Major League Baseball just announced that the Astros’ home series vs. the Texas Rangers has been relocated to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida due to the widespread devastation in Houston from Hurricane Harvey. The Astros will be considered the home team and will bat last. The games will have first pitch slated for 7:10 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday and 1:10 p.m. (ET) on Thursday.

Ken Rosenthal reports that the reason the series was not relocated to Arlington, Texas, where both teams are currently located due to flight diversions, is because it would create logistical problems. Specifically, swapping the series with the one scheduled for Texas in late September would result in the Rangers playing four straight series on the road.

No determination has been made regarding the Astros’ scheduled weekend series in Houston vs. the New York Mets. It could be in Florida again or moved to Citi Field in New York. It’s possible that Houston could be ready for the game by this weekend, but baseball officials are doubtful. (HBT)

and besides the 4 road straight road series - they said "no." The Astros offered to swap and they wouldn't do it. So much for the sake of Texans and the people of Houston. Look, I get the logistics, but I guess baseball, Rangers season tix and winning is more important than what is going on in the Houston area ? I'm shocked Manfried didn't step in on this and bend on the Rangers a little.

hey a few years ago Philly had some big political thing in town, so the Phils were the home team in Toronto for a series. They batted second and everything, but yet were in Toronto. If the Rangers wanted too, they could've done this. Yes, a royal pain in the ass, but for the sake of the people of Houston in this time of crisis, they could've done it.

Cardinals trade Mike Leake to the Mariners

In a move that no one was anticipating until just before it went down, the St. Louis Cardinals have traded pitcher Mike Leake to the Seattle Mariners. Bob Nightengale was the first to report the trade was imminent. Ken Rosenthal confirmed.

Leake is 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 103/35 in 154 innings. He has roughly $55 million left on the five-year, $80 million deal he signed in December 2015. The deal runs through 2020 with a mutual option for 2021 and a $5 million buyout. Leake had a full no-trade clause too, which he obviously waived here. It’s unclear how much of the salary the Mariners are assuming.

No word yet on the return to St. Louis.

^^Lance Lynn goes off about not getting a deal...

this trade seems to make more money room for lynn, but he didn't see it that way and sounds like a disgruntled employee.

The Detroit Tigers announced Thursday afternoon they have acquired righthanded pitcher Grayson Long and a player to be named later or cash considerations from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielder Justin Upton.

Long, 23, is ranked as the eighth-best prospect in the Angels system by Baseball America and the ninth-best prospect in the organization according to MLB Pipeline. In 26 starts this season between Single A Inland Empire and Double A Mobile, the 6-5, 230 lbs. righthander has compiled an 8-8 record with a 2.69 ERA (133.2IP/40ER), 125 strikeouts, a 1.17 WHIP and a .232 opponents batting average. Long, who was named to the Southern League All-Star Team earlier this season, currently leads all Southern League pitchers with a 2.52 ERA (121.2IP/34ER), while he is fourth with a .226 opponents batting average and fifth with a 1.13 WHIP. He also ranks fourth among Southern League starting pitchers with 10.50 baserunners allowed per nine innings.

Astros acquire Verlander from Tigers in blockbuster trade

In the type of blockbuster trade rarely seen in August, the Astros acquired former American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers, an industry source confirmed to the Chronicle.

The stunning deal, consummated just before Thursday's 11:59 p.m. ET deadline for a player to be eligible for his new team's postseason roster, cements the Astros' status as the favorites in the American League.

Verlander had to waive his no-trade rights to complete the trade. Franklin Perez, arguably the Astros' best pitching prospect and undoubtedly one of their best two, headlines the package going to the Tigers. Outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers will also go to the Tigers in the deal.

Verlander, 34, is under contract for two more seasons after this one at $28 million per year. The Tigers likely included money in the deal to better the prospect package they received in return

Jose Ramirez racks up five extra-base hits — a very rare feat — in win over Tigers...

Indians second baseman Jose Ramirez became the 13th player ever to accrue five extra-base hits in one game, helping the Tribe beat the Tigers 10-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Indians have now won 11 consecutive games.

Ramirez kicked things off by drilling a solo home run off of Chad Bell in the first inning, though he had some help. He doubled to lead off the third and later scored. He doubled again in the fifth but was stranded on third base. Ramirez smacked a two-run home run in the sixth off of Zac Reininger. He made it five extra-base hits in the eighth when he led off with his third double. Giovanny Urshela pinch-ran for him, ending his afternoon.

According to Baseball Reference, the nine other players to accrue five-plus extra-base hits in one game dating back to 1913 are:

    • Kris Bryant (Cubs): June 27, 2016 vs. Reds
    • Jackie Bradley, Jr. (Red Sox): August 15, 2015 vs. Mariners
    • Josh Hamilton (Rangers): May 8, 2012 vs. Orioles
    • Kelly Shoppach (Indians): July 30, 2008 vs. Tigers
    • Shawn Green (Dodgers): May 23, 2002 vs. Brewers
    • Steve Garvey (Dodgers): August 28, 1977 vs. Cardinals
    • Willie Stargell (Pirates): August 1, 1970 vs. Braves
    • Joe Adcock (Milwaukee Braves): July 31, 1954 vs. Brooklyn Dodgers
    • Lou Boudreau (Indians): July 14, 1946 vs. Red Sox
After Sunday’s performance, Ramirez is hitting .310/.362/.554 with 22 home runs, 66 RBI, 89 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases in 558 plate appearances.

Make it 20 wins in a row for the Cleveland Indians

Death. Taxes. The Cleveland Indians winning baseball games. They did it again tonight, beating the Detroit Tigers 2-0 for their 20th straight win. That ties the 2002 Oakland A’s for the American League record for consecutive wins.

This one was close on the scoreboard but easy in practice. That’s because the Tribe sent ace Corey Kluber out against the lowly Tigers this evening and he dominated, tossing a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out eight without walking a batter. The win upped his record to 16-4 and reduced his ERA to 2.44 on the year. Francisco Lindor‘s first inning homer was all the scoring Cleveland would need, but they got a second run in the sixth inning on a Drew VerHagen wild pitch which scored Carlos Santana.

The Indians won their 89th game on the season and, given that the Twins are cruising right now, will allow them to maintain their 14-game lead in the AL Central. I think they got this one wrapped up, folks.

Cleveland will go for sole possession of the AL consecutive wins record in tomorrow afternoon’s game against the Tigers. The all-time record without any ties belongs to the 1935 Chicago Cubs, who won 21 straight, which the Indians can tie tomorrow as well. (PHT)

Indians set AL record with 21st straight victory

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians hit baseball blackjack -- 21!

Making history almost every time they take the field, the Indians won their 21st straight game on Wednesday, 5-3 over the Detroit Tigers, to set an American League winning-streak record and join only two other teams in the past 101 years to win that many consecutive games.

Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer off Buck Farmer (4-3) and Mike Clevinger (10-5) won his fourth straight start as the Indians matched the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the second-longest streak since 1900. The run has put Cleveland within five wins of catching the 1916 New York Giants, who won 26 straight without a loss but whose century-old mark includes a tie.
The Indians haven't lost in 20 days, and they've rarely been challenged during a late-season run in which they've dominated every aspect of the game.
