YAWN was right. the 7th inning had to take an hour and i dozed off in the middle of it. i had to go to bed. starting this at 9 was rough on the working stiffs like me who have to get up the next morning at 7:30. congrats to team usa who had to win elimination games to get into the finals. great job. hope more top American players play next time. Now onto the MLB Season. Thank God!
If our top pitchers participated we would dominate this tournament every time. Never happen, though. At least not without major structural changes to it.
RIP Dallas Green - the first man to bring a World Series title to Philly. I met him once at a Howard Johnson's in NE Philly and he was a really nice guy. Larry Bowa was also there and a dick and Green had to apologize for him being a dick!
Bryant did not play. Arenado and Bregman were the 3B's on the roster. My opinion is that it's a combination of factors. For one thing I don't think US players in general care as much about representing their country as those in other countries. I think most US players feel more loyalty to their MLB teams that pay them, and getting ready for the regular MLB season is more important to them because that's where their earning power is. And I suspect the teams try to encourage their best players not to participate because they don't want to lose them for the MLB season to an injury sustained in the WBC. They don't want their very expensive SP's blowing their arms out throwing 5, 6, 7 all-out innings in March when they should be building up their arms. Stroman's performance last night highlights how the US can dominate with good pitching, but if you're a Blue Jays fan, you were probably stressed as sh!t worrying that either he was gonna blow his arm, blow his knee again, or that he's going to need a DL stint later in the year because of throwing competitive games in the middle of March. And any good player dealing with any sort of injury issue is pretty much guaranteed not to participate even if it's otherwise not going to keep them from starting the regular season. I think if they tweaked some things with the timing of the games and the sizes of the pitching staffs, you might get better participation.
i don't agree the WBC is at the same time as spring training. it forces players to choose - country or team paying them. big issue there for many of the players world wide.
Bryant did not play. Baez was the only Cub that played. The Cubs only had 3.5 months off between the last game in the WS and the start of spring training. That lead to a lot of guys not wanting to play. Arrieta wasn't going to play the year before free agency. They are also thinking ok we are going to play until November again. Anyway, that is why more Cubs players didn't participate and why more players in general don't participate.
I know Green is better know for the Phillies, but he changed the Cubs. It was really a sad couple days in Chicago sports with Krause and Green passing on back to back days.
Exactly. Only problem is when else could you do it? After the season, you're going to get even less participation. Coincide with the season, even worse. But if they shifted the game scheduling a little bit so the last round games are in the last week of ST that might help because it's a smoother timeline to the start of the MLB regular season. Allow them to roster as many pitchers as they want and shuffle them off and on the active day-of-game roster so they can get guys into the WBC games on days that coincide with their ST schedule might help. If MLB really wanted to help WBC participation, they'd also make some adjustments to their schedule every 3rd year, and probably some roster rules, too, to make it more enticing for the best players to participate, and for the teams to allow them to. That would require MLBPA cooperation, too, though. So again, probably not happening. They also probably need to get the games on earlier and on one of the big networks if they want to drive interest up.
yeah bc he stole Ryne Sandberg from the Phils for 3 crappy players. Biggest swindle in Phils history and he swindled the Phils. lol
maybe have it in november after the WS so many players are rested and only the WS winner and finalist would have a hard time sending their players due to rest? but november brings in bad weather too. nothing seems to work to appease everyone.
Well my boy Jonah Keri seems to think the door might've been kicked open for the big stars to become more involved, anyway... http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/s...wbc-final-that-turned-me-into-a-believer/amp/
