ARLINGTON -- The Rangers are making progress on a deal with free-agent first baseman Mike Napoli, according to Major League sources. The sides have been talking since the beginning of the offseason and appear to be moving close to a deal, with genuine optimism that it could get done before Spring Training. The club has not confirmed the news. The Rangers have targeted Napoli as a first baseman and designated hitter who could fit into the middle of their lineup. In 2016, Napoli hit .239 with 34 home runs, 101 RBIs and a .465 slugging percentage. Napoli, 35, played for the Rangers in 2011-12 and late in the '15 season. Both sides have been highly motivated for another reunion, but there seems to have been a hangup over whether the Rangers are willing to give Napoli a multiyear contract.
Yankees sign Chris Carter to a one-year, $3.5M deal Carter led the NL with 41 homers in 2016. He?s not as good as that suggests, however, having hit only .222/.321/.499 while leading the league in strikeouts. ...the deal was for a guaranteed $3.5 million with the chance for $4 million. It breaks down like this: $3 million base salary, $500,000 signing bonus, and $500,000 in incentives.
https://sports.yahoo.com/news/baseb...amining-our-stance-on-gambling-170536801.html --what does this say about Pete Rose then ?
Considering the way the argument against gambling by MLB personnel has been framed in the past (not just gambling on baseball, but the possibility that gambling losses even on other sports would leave them susceptible to being forced to affect the outcomes of games to repay their debts), it would seem kind of hard for them to come out in support of it now.
I heard on the news this morning they're looking into the possibility of having teams start extra innings with a runner already on 2nd in an effort to shorten games. Double boo, says I. That's a terribad idea.
that's not baseball the way baseball was intended to be played? it's like the 3 on 3 on hockey in OT - that's not how hockey was thought up! bad idea. bad, bad, bad.
http://6abc.com/news/pete-rose-eligible-for-phillies-wall-of-fame/1746623/ Welcome back, Pete ! About time MLB. Being banned from dugouts was 1 thing. Being banned from minor league stadiums was another thing. Being banned from press boxes made little sense. Being banned from alumni events and reunions teams was idiotic and asinine. Glad to see you got your heads out of your asses and allowed Pete to go back to Cincy last year and now to Philly.
Tigers? owner Mike Ilitch died?at Harper University Hospital on Friday afternoon. He was 87 years old. Ilitch?got his start with the Tigers in 1952 as an infielder for the affiliated Jamestown Falcons of the Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League. He worked his way up to Single-A Charlotte, then-affiliates of the Washington Senators, before an untimely knee injury forced him to abandon his minor league career for a more lucrative path. While he?s perhaps best known for founding Little Caesars Pizza in 1959, Ilitch enjoyed great success in the MLB and NHL circuits after acquiring the Detroit Red Wings in 1982 and the Tigers in 1992. He was responsible for moving the Tigers from Tiger Stadium to Comerica Park in 2000 and saw the club through five postseason runs, albeit none that ended with championship titles. His venture with the Red Wings reaped even bigger rewards, as the team clinched four Stanley Cups from 1996 through 2007 and?sustained a 25-year playoff streak. His son, Christopher Ilitch, issued?a statement following his father?s death: My father was a once-in-a-generation entrepreneur, visionary and leader, setting the tone for our organization and our family. [?]?He made such a positive impact in the world of sports, in business and in the community, and we will remember him for his unwavering commitment to his employees, his passion for Detroit, his generosity to others and his devotion to his family and friends. Together my family and the company celebrate the tremendous man he was, and we will continue to work hard to uphold his remarkable legacy. I?m honored to have had the opportunity to work with him to nurture and grow our businesses, but mostly, I?m grateful to have called him my Dad.

They have a new majority billionaire owner who wanted to buy Ryan Howard out 3 yrs ago. He wants to spend money, so let him. Buy them all and win. See how the prospects are this year for evaluation of who u need in 2018 etc. stop being cheap as they have no more money on the actual books now.
Some bad news from Arizona. The Diamondbacks just announced that bench coach Ron Gardenhire has prostate cancer. He will have surgery to remove his prostate at a date yet to be determined and will take a leave of absence from the team at that time. ?I?m going to fight it and deal with it,? Gardenhire said. ?It?s a bump in the road and it?s not how I envisioned starting Spring Training with a brand new team but it?s part of life. With the backing of this ball club, we?ll get through it and I?ll get through it.? Gardenhire, 59, is entering his first season with the Dbacks. He spent 13 seasons as manager of the Minnesota Twins, making 6 postseason appearances and winning the AL Manager of the Year Award in 2010. Before that he spent 11 seasons as the Twins? third base coach. ?We are a family,? said Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo. ?As a family, there?s a series of tests that are going to come upon us and this is a big one, but we?re going to come together and help Gardy through this to the best of our ability. We?re not going to miss a step because we?re committed to him.? Diamondbacks President & CEO Derrick Hall said, ?The entire organization stands behind Ron and we are here to support him through this challenging time. He certainly knows that there are resources throughout the franchise that he can turn to and of course, we will do everything we can to assist him.?
