MLB - NEWS & NOTES

Discussion in 'MLB General Discussion Board' started by Willie, Mar 7, 2015.

  1. I'm with igloo, the price is too high. Hamels will probably be dealt but not for what Amaro wants.

Matt Adams, the Slippery Rock Slugger as some have called him, strained his right quad running the bases, he's expected back in 3 to 4 months. Ryan Howard is the obvious first name thrown out by fans as he is very popular among Cardinals fans. He has a no trade clause which could be an issue. He is from here, but he also has an ugly legal disbute with family recently, so he may not want to move back. The obstacle to me is the contract and the market. Even if the Phils cover the money we would still have him next season, and why on earth would you want him and Adams on your roster? Adam Lind would serve the same purpose, to platoon with Mark Reynolds, and we could just cut him loose at the end of the year. The emotional side of me wants Howard but I'm skeptical if it's a wise move.

with howard - it's moving on and cutting ties and losses. st. louis need him. after this year he should be a free agent as the phils are buying out his contract.

hamels - above average? wow. well he's 4-0 in his last 4 starts and been pretty darn well in his career with little run support. he would have a ton more wins on a better team. even when the phils were winning his run support stunk. playoff tested and ws mvp.

amaro's price will come down but after what teams are offering and what has been published, they're on crack for thinking amaro will accept slop garbage A ballers for Hamels. boston cannot win with their slop and st.louis with wacha and lynn can't either.

do you win now or 3-5 yrs from now ? if you're close to the pennant - u win for now. not saying give up the farm, but 1 key prospect for 4 yrs of hamels never hurt anyone.

and sorry boston ONLY TEXAS has 2 stud prospects who can play for the phillies RIGHT NOW. They said no to the deal, but if anyone cracks, he may be them.

  3. Cat, I can't follow your logic. A team should make a move to get Hamels so they can win now, and they should give up major league pieces to do it? That makes no sense. If I'm trying to win now you aren't getting anyone who's contributing for me.

Ryan Howard is under contract for $25M for this season (so about $19M more), $25M for 2016, and then has a $23M club option for 2017 with a $10M buyout. So if the Cards were to trade for him today they would owe him a minimum of $54M, or $67M if they picked up the option. The Phils would cover $50M so says the rumor mills, but we'd still be stuck with him on the roster, just with someone else paying most of the money. Covering the money and buying out the contract are 2 very different things.

YIKES. I'm sorry mut, i thought the $50-55 mil was covering most of the deal with little left to pay. obviously that's incorrect. if im st.louis i don't do the deal then. stick with reynolds if you can or find a cheaper player.

i said minor league pieces. swihart was called up 2 weeks ago and has done zilch. i don't consider him a pro player. betts won't be dealt so i don't mean him either. i mean - top to decent minor league guys.

there was an article about a trade to boston but not for swihart and betts this morning but i can't find it now. phils scouts were at the games this week of the sox AA team, which is LOADED with prospects. they had scouts at their A team as well. Boston got swept by the twins, so they need something fast.

im saying forget swihart and betts and like the article says go after their other guys in the minors. apparently they have tons to spare.

  6. Cat, I thought you said you were wanting current MLB contributors which would be nonsense, my bad.

  7. A bit from the Howard to STL article:

Who lets this guy write, and does he do research? Through 9 trips around the starting rotation Michael Wacha has thrown more innings than either Lynn or Lackey. Carlos Martinez has thrown 5.8 innings/start which would put him on pace for 197 2/3 innings. You'd think he'd do more research on the Cardinals before he wrote an article on them.

    Quality start by pitcher:
    Lynn: 6 of 10
    Lackey: 6 of 10
    Wacha: 7 of 9
    Martinez: 6 of 9

Where's this guy get his info?

Harper has close to Triple Crown stats.......But doubt that will continue.....

Everybody in the division loses except the Red Birds! *NO*

Looks like quality starters to me. But what do I know? I just follow the Central Division everyday...... *DONT_KNOW*

  11. I get that Pittsburgh knows more than Philly about the Cardinals in general, so I don't expect the guy to be an expert, but he's in a position in which people assume he is trustworthy. People listen to him (I assume) because it's his job, you'd think he'd do the research on a team he's writing an article about.

about time harper lived up to his hype. he was hurt a lot in the beginning of his career.

to me, he's still not trout and his antics on the field are still annoying.

[h]Maldonado homers in 17th, Brewers beat Diamondbacks 7-6[/h]

MILWAUKEE (AP) Martin Maldonado slid into home plate just for fun. After 17 innings, it was a well-earned celebration for the weary Milwaukee catcher.

Maldonado homered to center field with one out in the bottom of the 17th, helping the Brewers outlast the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 Sunday to snap a seven-game losing streak.

''I was really tired, so I was happy to end the game like that,'' he said.

Maldonado hit the first pitch from reliever Vidal Nuno (0-1). As he rounded the bases, his equally fatigued but giddy Brewers teammates surrounded the plate.

They had every intention of piling on once he slid into home.

''I had never done it before,'' Maldonado said. ''It was hard to get back up. Everybody was on top of me.''

Making his first relief appearance since 2010, Matt Garza (3-7) threw five scoreless innings. He stranded a runner in scoring position in the 13th, 15th and 17th.

''Those games are tough for the guys, especially the road team,'' Arizona manager Chip Hale said. ''We had many opportunities to score.''

It was the longest Brewers home game since Milwaukee lost 4-2 to the Chicago Cubs in 17 innings on May 15, 2003. At 5 hours, 49 minutes, it was the longest game by time at Miller Park, which opened in 2001.

Maldonado will remember this day for a while.

He caught all 17 innings and went 4 for 6 with three runs and two RBIs. He doubled in a two-run sixth that helped Milwaukee rally from a 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead.

''He's got tomorrow off,'' manager Craig Counsell said.

Good thing for Maldonado that All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy is expected to return from the disabled list from a broken toe on Monday.

[h]Votto walks on ball 3; Reds sweep Nationals, 8-2[/h]

CINCINNATI (AP) Ball three. Take your base.

With the help of a premature walk to Joey Votto that went unnoticed on the field, the Cincinnati Reds rallied for six runs in the seventh inning and beat the Washington Nationals 8-2 on Sunday.

Todd Frazier and Brandon Phillips each homered and drove in two runs as the Reds completed a three-game sweep of the NL East leaders. But it was a three-ball walk to Votto during the big rally that began to generate buzz after the game.

Apparently, none of the umpires and nobody on the field realized the count was 3-2 when Votto trotted to first base with one out. Cincinnati went on to score five more times in the inning.

A statistician on the press level at the ballpark noticed the gaffe and mentioned it to a Reds spokesman. Others watching the game pointed it out on social media. But on the field, play continued without interruption.

Neither manager was asked about the mistake afterward, but video showed Matt Grace threw only three balls to Votto before he went to first.

It was the latest indication that Cincinnati's fortunes have started to turn. The Reds have won four of five after a nine-game losing streak. They swept Washington for the first time since Aug 2011.

''Hitting is contagious,'' Frazier said. ''It is the same with hitting with runners in scoring position. It is a mindset. Let the pitches come to you and attack.''

Phillips snapped a 2-all tie with an RBI single off Aaron Barrett (3-1) in the seventh. Frazier followed Votto's walk with a run-scoring double, and Jay Bruce hit a two-run double.

Cincinnati sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning against three Washington relievers. Marlon Byrd stated the rally with an infield hit. Billy Hamilton popped up a bunt that Barrett dropped, but he recovered in time to force Byrd. Hamilton then got his 23rd stolen base, setting the stage for Phillips.

''Byrd hits a ball off the end of the bat,'' Nationals manager Matt Williams said. ''Then we get the bunt popped up and we don't catch it. That's the worst-case scenario, because now you've got Hamilton on base. There's pressure. He steals a base, there's a ball in the hole. The bullpen's been pushed a lot on this trip. It would help if your starters go deep into games. That didn't happen much on this road trip. It's a little blip.''

The Reds have won three straight for the first time since May 12-14. The Nationals have lost three in a row for the first time since a six-game skid from April 22-27.

[h]Diamondbacks 1B Goldschmidt reaches base seven times in loss[/h]

Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt set a franchise record by reaching base safely seven times in his team's 7-6 loss to the Brewers in 17 innings on Sunday.

Goldschmidt went 3 for 4 with four walks, a home run and an RBI.

Goldschmidt is enjoying an MVP-caliber season, hitting .354 with 15 home runs and 43 RBI in 181 at-bats this season.

phils lose 8th in a row!

phils now may eat money to move hamels, but they still want a top prospect. with kazmir& cueto hurt, that's 2 more arms down. the need for hamels is higher than ever now. he will be dealt.
