Because having 1st round draft pick compensation attached meant that 1) a lot of times teams would offer the QO to a guy only because they wanted to score the draft pick, and 2) once those borderline players (e.g., Dexter Fowler and Ian Desmond last year, Ervin Santana and Nelson Cruz the year before, etc.) rejected the QO, it greatly reduced the number of teams willing to pursue those guys in FA because they didn't want to give up their pick, thereby driving down their salaries. Now that middle class of FA's won't have that artificial restriction on their value anymore because teams will be more reluctant to give the QO if they're only getting a 2 or a 3 back, and more teams will be willing to bid on those players that do hit the market after rejecting the QO because they won't have the specter of losing their 1st anymore. Less restriction on movement + higher salaries = win
I don't see them moving Turner unless it's for Sale or someone of that caliber. Don't sleep on their other prospects, though...they've got a few other guys right in that level of prospect as Turner. Robles and one of their next couple of P's not named Giolito would still be a really good get for you guys.
If they get some top minor leaguers and they pan out, it's a good deal. You can't have everything......Obviously, the Pirates thought it was worth it.....They are not going anywhere but the Wild Card Game every year. Time for a change. Although Turner would of gave the Pirates the better of the deal.....
no one is good as turner in their system. he played half a season and was unreal. he would've battled seager for the ROY if he played a full season. And yes, some like Sale is worth Turner... Pitt holds the cards here. How bad is their current pitching staff ? (Igloo?) What do they need more of? Hitters or pitchers? Seemed like the Buccos have a lot of young pitchers as they trotted out to the bump this past season already.
You're way underselling how good of prospects Giolito and Robles are, IMO. They are definitely in the same class as Turner was as a prospect. Giolito was universally ranked ahead of Turner the last two years. Robles should go into next year a consensus Top 10 in all of MLB, same as Turner was going into this season. And he's 4 years younger. I totally agree on valuing Turner higher now that he's proven it in the majors, but you're not exactly getting table scraps with those other guys. Reynaldo Lopez isn't very far behind them, either...he will at least be a stud in the bullpen if he doesn't make it as a starter.
see u dog that's where ur wrong IMO. turner already proved himself vs live mlb pitching and he very well. these other guys did not do as well or are still prospects. giolito was lit up wasn't he? to me they can't be in the SAME CLASS bc turner proved he can hit MLB hitter. the others are still in the minors so who knows what they can do - good or bad ??
How good did you think Turner was this time a year ago, when he was a Top 10 prospect and also had just come off a terrible first brief run in the majors? I already agreed with you that Turner is more valuable now. But AS PROSPECTS, Giolito and Robles are in the same class of what Turner was AS A PROSPECT. That's all I'm saying. It would be dumb for Pittsburgh to turn down one of those guys right now if they could get him for McCutchen. Just like it would've been dumb for them to turn down Turner for him this time a year ago.
after reading - i dont think any of those guys are coming pitts way. after rereading your post(s) the one above ^^^ and the other one, i apologize u dog. your point is valid.
No worries. Yeah, problem for PIT is they're selling low on Cutch now...a year ago they probably could've gotten Robles and Lopez or Fedde, plus a couple of other guys. He's as intriguing a buy-low guy as I can remember...like we discussed earlier in the thread I can't every remember a guy of his skill type dropping off the table that fast. OTOH, Washington is looking to make a splash to catch up to the Cubs and they need a CF so they can keep Harper in RF where he belongs and are probably willing to overpay a bit in the hopes Cutch will bounce right back to being a 6 win player again. Personally I think they'd be better off nabbing someone like Carlos Gomez in FA, who's still an elite defensive CF and swung the bat pretty well for a month and a half to end the year in Texas, to hold the fort for a couple of years until Robles is ready to take it over.
Pretty good summary of the pluses and minuses of trading Cutch, encompassing a number of the things discussed here: http://triblive.com/sports/pirates/11577896-74/mccutchen-pirates-traded
shocked AMCC wasn't dealt yet. As Will reported - some decent money being spent so far. Winter meetings this week. I don't expect the Phils to do much, even though they have a ton of money and spaces to fill. Kind of sucks seeing other teams get what they need and the Phils to do nothing.
So the PED guys can't get into the HOF, but the guy who was commissioner during that era gets in near unanimously. Makes total sense. And how the hell does John Schuerholtz get in unanimously and Steinbrenner doesn't even get 5 votes? And Marvin Miller ain't even on the ballot? Crazy. Those two are no-brainers. edit - I'm told Miller wasn't on the ballot because only people from '88 and on were considered on this go-round.
the main HOF vote isn't until second week of january. who voted for these guys? i don't recall another HOF vote?
It's part of the new iteration of the old Veteran's Committee: http://www.si.com/mlb/2016/07/26/baseball-hall-of-fame-era-committees-rule-changes Per Jay Jaffe, the specific voters for this cycle were: The 16-member committee that voted consisted of owners Bill DeWitt Jr. (Cardinals) and David Glass (Royals), executives Andy MacPhail (Phillies), Kevin Towers (Reds) and Paul Beeston (formerly of the Blue Jays), veteran media members Bill Center, Steve Hirdt and Tim Kurkjian, and Hall of Famers Roberto Alomar, Bobby Cox (Schuerholz's longtime partner in Atlanta), Andre Dawson, Dennis Eckersley, Pat Gillick (the most recent executive elected to the Hall, in 2011), Frank Thomas, Ozzie Smith and [del]Frank Thomas[/del] Don Sutton.
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/b...to-hall-of-fame-by-todays-game-era-committee/ why would any of these guys but big George even be on a ballot? So they qualify for either the - Modern Baseball (1970-87), or Today's Game (1988-2016)? The HOF just became the Participation Medal Hall! Wow! It would be a disgrace to see any of them in the Hall.
after years of defending the HOF, it's now a utter laughingstock! 4 different committees now? wow. i may have a shot to get in 1 day.
McGwire is certainly a legit candidate when allowing for PED issues (and Selig and LaRussa getting in should certainly remove that barrier for those guys...I know it won't, but it should). And you can make a case for Piniella as a manager. Not a strong case, IMO, but it's not a disgrace for him to at least be considered, either.
