It's all good, baby. I wholeheartedly agree injuries played a part in his power drop from the 30's to 14. And it sounds like you're on board with the notion that whatever he would've done sans the injury, it most likely would've been somewhere in between the 30's and 14. Meaning there was essentially no chance he was ever going to produce at a level in those years that warranted that contract (most especially the $85MM guaranteed for ages 34-36). When he was hitting 50 bombs and knocking in 140, he might've been worth that kind of money, but once he dropped back even just to the 30-100 range, his value dropped precipitously, because, not that 30-100 isn't good, but it's not really special production for a 1B, either. Especially for one that doesn't field his position particularly well. And the salient point remains that betting $14MM for 1 year on a Cutch rebound at age 30 is a much better gamble than betting $125MM that Howard could sustain his age 28 production for ages 32-36. @= Anyway, we shall leave it there.
*DANCE* *YAHOO* *HI* AGREED!!! Thanks to playing fantasy baseball, i see a ton of power stats down lately. Howard had 58 hrs once. I think the leader this year was Mark Trumbo with 47. 47 is a lot but how many were above 30? Back in Howard prime, you had a ton of guys doing similar things and Pujols leading the pack. Now it's a select few guys and that's it. 145+rbis? forget that from happening anytime soon. the leader was around 133 this year. stats are taking a hit for some reason. most suggest the pitchers are better and smarter than bf. beats me, the only thing i can throw is a wiffleball.
Actually HR's were up overall this season. I believe the per game HR #s were the highest they've been in 15 years, and the Orioles were on pace to break the team single season record a good chunk of the year before falling short at the end. There were 36 players that hit at least 30 (only 20 last year). There's been a huge increase in solo HR's, which is probably why you're seeing fewer guys with massive individual HR and RBI totals.
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/j...lugs-nearly-cost-him-his-voice-144626335.html i hate Joe Buck, but this is just sad and pathetic !
i guess i like the old power #'s of thome, griffey, howard, arod, texiera, pujols and many others. i guess if i add sosa, bonds and mcgwire i bring steroids into this too. hell juan gonzalez almost had 100 rbis at the all-star break once. those days are long over.

Damn those are some great pitching match ups (at least name wise). Now wait all the games will be 10-9. Lol.
Ok men, explain the Jessica Mendoza hate to me. How can someone say oh because Mendoza is a woman she shouldn't be allowed to broadcast and then watch the incompetence of TBS and be OK with it? As a woman who works primarily with men (I'm a civil engineer), I'm probably overly sensitive to the subject of a woman being dissed just because she doesn't have a penis. But do the people who complain about her even listen to what she says or because she didn't play baseball she can't possibly know what she is talking about. (Well geez boys my male OB didn't have to be able to have babies to know how to deliver them).
Men are stupid. You're welcome. I haven't heard her do a game yet, but she was a 2X Olympic softball player, so it's not like she has no cred at all on how the game is supposed to be played. There are plenty of male announcers, even ones who were accomplished Major Leaguers, that suck at it (I think it was Ron Darling doing the Sox' game with Ernie Johnson last night? He is absolutley awful. And Cal Ripken is a total stiff). Far as I'm concerned if she sucks, it's because she sucks, not because she's a woman.
I have heard her do 2 baseball games now and she is pretty good. This is just something that has been going on since the beginning of time and just shows the insecurity of a lot of dudes out there. I'd rather listen to her call a game than some of the other clowns getting airtime out there. I think that for some men she could be the greatest broadcaster of all-time , but since she's a woman its a no-no. As a guy , I dont understand it myself. I'd also be willing to bet she has forgotten more about baseball than a lot of men know. She's actually a medal winning ball player. ESPN has had a woman do football for a few years now and thats even more difficult for people to handle. WCBS News Radio 88 is the voice of the Yankees and they had a woman color/analyst that worked all the Yankees games... I was ok with her till she started crying on the air, lol. That was a bit odd, but im not going to stereo-type an entire gender based on one womans action. (ps - TBS sucks real bad lol )
2 names stand out to me - joe buck and tim mccarver. both suck and i couldn't wait till mccarver retired. add that rat weasel bob costas to my list too. if they can do a baseball playoff game and do it badly and continue to be on tv and get paid buckets of money, why not give mendoza a shot? i heard her broadcast this week and it was solid. she is no worse than buck and mccarver and very enlightening to boot. give her a chance. baseball can be a slow and boring game if scoreless with little action. you need announcers to breathe life into the watching audience, not bore them to sleep like ripken and darling do.
