Mike Napoli hit .239-34-101 this year. With a much weaker lineup around him than Howard had in 2010. Wanna guess how much he made? Wanna guess how much he was worth? Batting average 2006 .313 2007 .268 (down) 2008 .251 (down) 2009 .279 (up) 2010 .276 (down) 2011 .253 (down) OBP 2006 .425 2007 .392 (down) 2008 .339 (down) 2009 .360 (up) 2010 .353 (down) 2011 .346 (down) SLG 2006 .659 2007 .584 (down) 2008 .543 (down) 2009 .571 (up) 2010 .505 (down) 2011 .488 (down) Sorry, that's what we call a downward trend, my friend.
howard had rollins leadoff and utley at 3. he made werth as his stats never replicated after philly. no one protected him. and if u wanna compare mike napoli to howard go ahead. it's 4:51 and im outta here!
Sure. Napoli just produced a statistically similar season at age 34 to what Howard produced at age 30 and led to the Phillies guaranteeing him $75MM for his age 34-36 seasons 2 years before he was even eligible for FA. The kind of season teams can't get for $7-8MM according to you. But the stats say Napoli was worth 8.6 and the Indians paid him 7. He's a FA after this year...do you think he's going to get $50MM for the next 2 years? Because by the logic of the Howard contract you're inexplicably defending even after acknowledging it was a bad contract, and the stats Howard was putting up at the time he was given it, that's how much Napoli should get.
Actually that should really be $60MM for the next 2 years because the Phillies still have to pay Howard $10MM to go away lol.
He may be an Olympic class dickhole, but good lord Bumgarner also might be the most money big game pitcher I've ever seen.
Blue Jays Marco Estrada (R) @ Rangers Cole Hamels (L)...............................4:30pm et. Red Sox Rick Porcello (R) @ Indians Trevor Bauer (R)...........................8:00pm et.
I don't think it is hyperbole or living in the moment to call him one of the best ever in the post season. The numbers back him up. It is no longer a small sample size. It is ridiculous. As a Cubs fan, I'm not a huge fan of the matchup. Cubs hitters do better when they have a history with a pitcher (particularly Bryant and Russell). Despite the 2 rookies on New York, I felt better about the experience against Syndagard and Familia. There is some record with Cueto due to his time with Reds, but with so many of these guys only being in the league 2 seasons, they would not have seen him a ton before he was traded last year. As for familiarity with Samardzija, only 6 of the current Cubs had big league time with him (unless I missed someone).
howard never batted as low as nap till the last 2 yrs (after injury). howard had 3 seasons of 45hrs or more and 1 of over 57 hrs! he was also ROY, MVP and NLCS MVP. That's why he got the money. What did Nap ever do in his career in comparison ? Nothing! they all have bad contracts and they're all overpaid. you think the angels love paying pujols his $200 mil now? no. overpaid. im done with this.
and you're over the age of 45? what about pedro martinez or randy johnson? or that crumb curt schilling? talk about big games? madbum hasn't been around long enough or pitched in enough playoff games to be big game and if not for his huge WS run and awards, what else has he done in the postseason? big game-he pitches today for Texas! Cole Hamels took that crappy 08 Phils staff on his back to the 08 WS and then again to WS runner-up in 09. NLCS and WS MVPs to boot. Before his Sept collapses this year, I think he went 14-2 for Texas since the trade from Philly to Texas.
Probably a good idea if you're going to continue to willfully ignore the facts being presented to you.
what facts? you haven't presented anything but 1 year of mike napoli at $7 million dollars. no one hitting 45 hrs for 3 yrs and 1 yr of 58 makes $7 million. lets see what he does next year as this year seems like a fluke more than anything and his average was dogshit. again, NO ONE who hit 3 seasons of 45 hrs or more or 58 hrs makes $7 mil. no one!! howard got that money based on 4 above average years at the plate and a few awards. they were assuming more would continue. due to age, injury, time etc it didn't happen and they were on the hook for millions of dollars. it happens all the time - i.e. pujols. it's all high risk and high reward. the phils front office took a chance on howard and got hurt financially and production wise. what else do you want to hear u dog? angels got screwed on pujols and josh hamilton. so you think mccutch is worth $14 mil at his age and his current year at the plate. good for you. you go sign him. i don't want him. and what if his stats continue to slide this time next year? then what?
What do you mean lack of record in the post season? 97.1 innings (34th all time), 15 games, 13 starts, a 1.94 ERA, 3 complete game shutouts (tied for 2nd all time), A 0.86 WHIP, .239 opposing player OBP. Ridiculous. If anything, there is post season lore about him. Hamel 95 IP, 3.03 ERA, 15 games started. 1.03 WHIP, .265 OBP Johnson - 121 IP, 19 games, 3.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, .465 OBP Martinez - 96 IP. 16 games, 3.26 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, .309 OBP Come on man. This isn't a small sample size or living in the moment.
bf the giants last WS where he dominated, i barely even heard of him. he wasn't even the ace of the staff on the other 2 WS teams. Tim Lincecum or Matt Cain were. What are his stats if you take away the 2014 Playoff Run? I think a large majority of them come from that run, including the shutouts. you said "most money big game pitcher I've ever seen." 2014 - sure. 2010 and 2012 - no. I would take Pedro over Madbum any day!
Playoff games/innings/W-L/ERA Martinez 16/96.1/6-4/3.46 Johnson 19/121.0/7-9/3.50 Schilling 19/133.1/11-2/2.23 Bumgarner 15/97.1/8-3/1.94 Through age 26: Martinez 1/7.0/1-0/3.86 Johnson 0 Schilling 4/31.1/1-1/2.59 Bumgarner 15/97.1/8-3/1.94 Yeah, I'd say he's pretty firmly in the conversation already. Also I said he MIGHT BE the best BIG GAME pitcher I've ever seen. Not overall best post-season pitcher ever. Look at what he's done the 3 times he's been called on to pitch with his team's season on the line - CG shutout, 5 inning save on 2 days' rest (from another CG shutout!), CG shutout. That's as money as it gets in those situations, my friend. Are Pedro, Schilling, and Johnson in the convo? Sure they are. So is John Smoltz. So is Jack Morris. Even Cliff Lee merits at least a mention. Throw El Duque in there for good measure. For a long time I've said if I had to win one game, Pedro would be my pick. But Bumgarner has certainly proved himself worthy of consideration for that honor to this point.
It's all high risk, but Howard's was exceptionally high based on the downward trend of his production, his skill set, and the amount of money they were guaranteeing him for seasons that were virtually certain to be worse than what he was producing at time, which was already well below the $25MM per year level. Also Pujols and Hamilton's deals were given when they were subject to the free market. And both had better seasons the year before they hit FA than Howard did in 2010. Which was 2 years before he would've been eligible for FA. You know all this. You know it was a bad deal. You said so yourself. Yet for some bizarre reason you're continuing to argue with me like it was. It's like you're Ryan Howard's big brother or something...it's OK for you to say he sucks, but if anybody else says it, there's gonna be a fight!
u dog no-he sucks. we all agree. no fighting. im too damn old with a bad back. i just think the Achilles crippled him and his power. his stats went downward, but after the injury they significantly went downward. he went from hrs in the 30's to 14! PU! i think you would agree the injury played a part in that? lets shake hands. initially we disagreed on mccutchen and $14-15 mil. howard was brought into it and all hell broke loose. it was like the fight scene at the Palimino Club in the movie Hooper with Burt Reynolds and Terry Bradshaw! hahahahahahhahaha
