Jose Fernandez has died at age 24, the Marlins confirmed on Sunday morning. As a result of the tragic news, the Marlins have cancelled Sunday's game against the Braves. Fernandez and two others were killed in an early-morning boating accident along the coast of Miami beach. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reportedly received a call concerning a possible accident around 3 a.m. ET. Upon arrival, they found an overturned boat that had crashed into the rocks. Three bodies were subsequently discovered. It's sad whenever a 24-year-old loses their life. That Fernandez brought joy to so many with his talent and personality just compounds the effect. Besides, Fernandez also had an inspiring backstory, having left Cuba as a teenager. Nearly six years later, he would reunite with his grandmother in tear-jerking fashion. Obviously Fernandez's on-the-field accomplishments are trivial. However, there is an expectation to present them in some capacity. Fernandez pitched just two full seasons, having lost most of the 2013-14 campaigns to Tommy John surgery and recovery. He nonetheless used his time wisely, quickly establishing himself as one of the best, most exciting pitchers in baseball. Fernandez won the 2013 Rookie of the Year award by posting a 2.18 ERA over 172 innings. He made his first of two All-Star Game appearances that season as well, and finished third in Cy Young voting, behind Clayton Kershaw and Adam Wainwright. That was his age-20 season. This season marked a triumph for Fernandez, as he returned to a full workload after making 11 high-quality starts in 2015. He showed no rust. Fernandez entered the weekend with the best strikeout rate and most wins (16) of his career.
very sad about Fernandez and his wife announced they were having a baby last week. cbs has 4 articles about "making sense of his death?" I don't understand that. if any of you know boats, making sense of this are not the questions to be asking. speed, why out so late, boat lighting, why not wearing life jackets etc is what needs to be asked. sad another young life and 2 colleagues taken way too soon.
And the thing that must devastate the organization is that they pushed his start a day. He wouldn't have been on the boat if it wasn't for that. You can't blame him though as they wanted to rest him some more due to his pitch count.
This Jose Fernandez story is one of the saddest sports stories of my lifetime. I've been a fan of his since he came into the league and I heard the story of him risking his life to save his mother while defecting from Cuba. He went through so much in his life and appreciated everything he earned. He did so much in the Miami community and wanted to help others. I've never heard a bad thing about him. He was what every athlete should strive to be. You could always tell he had a true love for the game and had fun doing it. I've never seen someone love what they do more than Jose when he was at the ballpark.
yeah and thankfully so far, there were no drugs or booze on the boat. i have him in fantasy, so i knew about his start being pushed back.
the tribute for Fernandez last night was hard to watch. really tough. and then Gordon goes yard and breaks down in tears at home plate and then is surrounded in the dugout. wow.
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/w...in-benches-clearing-brawl-after-trading-hbps/ NY and Toronto can't play nice. My new rule if i was Commish - if you bean someone you get suspended 25 games. If you rush the pitcher, you get 25 games and if you leave the dugout or bullpen and run onto the field 50 games! This crap has to stop!
i know Will, bc baseball has no balls (no pun intended). Make a statement and implement it and then watch what happens.
99% of the time It is impossible to differentiate between an accidental HBP and an intentional one. This would be one of the dumbest rules and sports and would make the NFL catch rule seem sensible.
really? it seemed the 2nd and 3rd beanings were intentional. and if u rush the mound or leave the dugout, you should be suspended. i guarantee if the suspensions were long, there would be less of this crap!
Fuck the Yankees. Benoit likely out for the season with a torn Calf. His ERA was like 0.39 or something. Travis day-to-day.
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/s...-to-join-fernandez-on-night-of-boat-accident/ omg - Fernandez asked several Marlins to go out with him on the boat and they all declined. Wow. It could've been worse!
