isn't there an old saying that a good woman can bring down an entire navy or empire? something like that. hahahaha
Pirates are sinking. Now they can't hit and the pitching stinks. They are 21-1 when scoring 5 runs or more. I guess any team would like to score 5 runs or more every time out.......
ah i lived 4 blocks from here and if the drawing was better, my old apt can be clearly seen in this view. that street bh CF is 10th Street. I lived on the corner of 10th and Bigler. When the stadium opened, the phils sent out a colored composite sketch of the stadium and neighborhood but not to scale to all season tix holders. my apt was in the sketch!
this was Derek Jeter's post after Ali died. He caught huge flak for it and the NY Daily News ripped into him and so did others. I don't see the big deal here. It was well written. What should Jeter say here?
Good question Fish. The funny thing is he was the greatest in his own mind. He was the only one calling himself the greatest in his beginnings. I think more to the point is he was the greatest boxer, period. Was he greater than the Arizona Cardinal who quit the NFL and left all that money behind to go and fight for his country? Course not! He wouldn't go over and fight when his country called. He'd rather go to jail than possibly be shot. So again, tell me why he's the greatest? Possibly greatest coward? Why is this stuff never brought up anymore when talking about Ali?
i agree. he was the biggest loudmouth and showboat! he was lucky he won so much when he did bc once you lose like Tyson did to Douglas, you are no longer invincible. To me, Ali isn't the greatest anything. He was nothing but a showboat like 99.9% of the NBA, 90% of the NFL and 95% of baseball!
well igloo - go on the boxing thread and i just kicked a hornet's nest for you ! and the Cardinal you're thinking of is Pat Tillman.
Tillman's name was on the tip of my tongue and I didn't feel like googling it. The thing with Ali is I grew up during that era. I was eligible to be drafted and I remember all the crap that came out of Ali's mouth and all the the cowardly things he said. All of a sudden because he's old, has Parkinson's and died, thats all forgotten. My Uncle was a paratrooper in WWII also......
Thanks Fish, appreciate it! I was already there backing you and myself up telling the whole story. Which most seem to be afraid to do.
sorry Will, but i see it like igloo. Everyone is praising Ali etc. He wouldn't go to Vietnam while thousands of other blacks did and died. Sorry, but that should be mentioned with all his other feats. It's like mentioning Pete Rose's career without mentioning oh and btw he gambled on baseball and was banned for life.
Thats pretty obvious Will. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. It's a forum with opinions and I gave mine. I will post what I just posted on the Ali thread in case you miss it. "Another CRAZY thing Ali's daughter said last night on the tele is that she compares her dad to Nelson Mandela? I can understand a family member backing her family but comparing Ali to Mandela who was jailed until he was an old man? Waaaay out of line, imo........How do you compare a conceited loudmouthed boxer to human rights activist that was jailed for years for his opinion?"
If your going to tell the story of someones life, try and start from the beginning! Not after he dies and just the good parts...... *NO*
You can dig up a ton of dirt on any, i mean any human thats ever existed. I tend to form opinions and share them publicly under scrutiny. You seem lately on these boards to pull up the dirt on people when their dead. I just find that tabloidish. Some dwell on the positive side of life, some on the negative. Choose which you will, just when you make a blanket statement of "Which most seem to be afraid to do", you are wrong. I dont like what Ali said and did in many aspects of his life, but im not going to piss on his grave.
I can dwell on the good Will but I think most on here already are. I think Ali did many good things also. I just never considered him "the greatest". And comparing him to Mandela is crazy. Most of Ali's life was nothing like what Mandela had to go through. I already made the comment that I never agreed with his decision not to fight for his country when many others did.......This is NEVER brought up and I think it should be......I can also understand his own daughter comparing him to Mandela. But I doubt most here think thats a fair comparison.....And I don't think saying that is pissing on his his grave......
Back to baseball. Just saw on the MLBN that the Pirates are calling up Jameson Taillon to pitch tomorrow nights game against the Mets. I don't know why Glasnow isn't getting called up........
