Let's also not lose sight of the fact that John Dorsey is clearly one of the Seth's sources in this article. Baker is the catalyst for this franchise and its potential turn-around, but Dorsey is the puppet master. That he forced Jimmy to relinquish reporting control to him is in itself a miracle. He knew Mayfield was QB1 in October - making him just the second Cleveland Browns fan to do so. His first draft speaks for itself. He's controlled all leaks out of Berea, identified the leakers (Hue, duh), and even planted the false flags and narratives out there - and now he very clearly helps give flavor to this piece. Bonus: "I don't need f**king nerds to tell me how to evaluate players." - Dorsey on analytics
Just guessing, but... I'm probably going to continue to unbox this piece for another 10-20 posts. You're welcome (or I apologize) in advance.
Jimmy Haslam is an unmitigated disaster as an owner. His impetuousness outlined in this story is off-the-charts. None of the business acumen he had, nor the experience as a minority owner with the Steelers, seemed to have impacted him and his approach to the Browns. Maybe he finally is turning that corner, but it's year f**king six, dude! Hires Joe Banner as his lone direct report, praises Joe for the work he does, fires Joe after one year and thanks him for building a "strong team". Promotes Ray Farmer, without interview, and makes him report directly to Banner. Gives VP of Marketing (Scheiner) some control in football decisions. Marries new GM with reluctant choice for head coach. Forces Manziel (over Bridgewater and the scouts' opinions). Promotes Sashi Brown one year into the Farmer/Pettine experience. Fires Farmer/Pettine, promotes Sashi Brown again, promising to "ride through the analytics" with him. Go against the brass and co-owner (and wife), hiring Hue Jackson who does not fit the mold for coach they're looking for, is diametrically opposed to the rebuild plan, and comes with his own set of failings that will cause even more strife for the Browns. Fires Sashi Brown halfway into a four-year rebuild, against the wishes of the brass. Dumb luck? Wanting a big name NFL GM, he hires the recently released John Dorsey.
Please do. A lot to un-box in there...Holy shit. I knew it was bad, but some of that stuff is just completely ridiculous...
This killed my Haley theory. The fact that he didn't want to be named interim head coach is something. I had suspected his release was due to him not being named the interim and throwing a fit. To this end, it does seem that Haslam realized the environment was far too toxic and was taking corrective steps (or Dorsey was pulling strings). Either way, it's interesting... Dorsey and Haley had a history and likely would have been fine working together.
Haley only has to look in the mirror, as to why he's not still here. He has a reputation of being abrasive. Haley was the coach refusing to get Chubb involved in the offense, because he favored Carlos Hyde....Also, unlike Freddie K., Haley did nothing to simplify things for Baker when he got his chance. We struggled on offense until Haley was fired...Once Freddie took over, it was like the light switch went on for this Browns offense. That's about as damning as it gets for Todd Haley.
The truly mind blowing stuff from that article all stem from the Haslams. Jimmy's choice nickname for Sashi is just amazing. It's hard to believe that billionaires could be so blind....And who hires a GM without an interview? smh...Why even have a GM if your going to manipulate everything anyway? Damn. I knew it took something special to go as far into the abyss as we did...There's just a lot to digest. Nothing sums up "complete dysfunction" quite like inadvertently broadcasting hardcore porn for 20 minutes, throughout the office headquarters, while you were trying to teach everyone a lesson about how the organization is perceived by the public.... Good lord. That's epic.
Ahh... DeShone. I sincerely do hope Sashi writes a book about those two seasons, but I doubt he does. For now, we only have what's reported by people - and likewise, the opposite of whatever Mike Silver says - to go on. Look at the 2017 draft without pick #52: Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers, David Njoku, Larry Ogunjobi, Howard Wilson (injuries) all in our first four rounds. DeShone Kizer is *not* an analytics-type pick. He's a Hue Jackson quarterback. The Browns' own guidelines show the importance of a QB... and the front office seemed to have allowed Hue his own way given Garrett > Trubisky/Mahomes/Watson. Did they capitulate and give the head coach his QB at #52? My guess is yes. They followed their other tenets and acquired a veteran QB in one of the most creative NFL moves ever - trading for Brock Osweiler. A tall, big-armed quarterback that would clearly be a Hue Jackson fit. They drafted a tall, big-armed quarterback that would clearly be a Hue Jackson fit. They told Hue *not* to start Kizer. His own QB coach (David Lee) told Hue *not* to start Kizer. Instead, Hue disregarded all of them, said Brock Osweiler did not have the talent and was okay cutting him, and turned to Kizer. 0-16 was the result. The irony is that it only cost David Lee, Sashi Brown, and Kizer their jobs after that season. And ultimately, it brought us #6. Now, we'll never know how many teams jumped on the bandwagon after Baker's sensational start - would the Giants have taken him at #2? The Jets at #3? But that unknown is why we actually own Hue a debt of gratitude on that one.
LOL - I don't put that on Haslam. That's on that marketing guy. Who TF thinks #DP stands for "Dawg Pound"?
To be fair, the same thing happened in Foxborough when they streamed the hashtag #3Way thinking it was about Belichick, Brady, and Kraft all getting into Canton on the same class.
When they brought that up in their marketing meeting: Head of Marketing: "... and so, we're going to stream Twitter's reaction to Cleveland using the hashtag 'DP'. You know, for Dawg Pound." Werid Guy in the Back, Let's Call Him Todd: "Umm... you sure you wanna go with that?" HoM: "Yeah, why?" Todd: ... HoM: ... Todd: "Umm... no reason."
I think your theory may be closer to reality than you think (or closer than the writer's unnamed source's theory). There are a couple of things we can see, feel and touch that lends credence to your theory. Dorsey physically removed Hyde from the roster leaving only Johnson and Chubb for Haley to choose from for a RB. And it's not like Dorsey did that to promote the RB he drafted as Dorsey also brought Hyde in as a free agent signing. With all the coaching and coordinator moves across the league since the end of the regular season, I don't recall Haley's name being mentioned even once for any of those openings. It's become obvious to me that the toxicity level between Jackson and Haley had reached an unworkable point. For once, Haslam (with input from Dorsey, no doubt) did the right thing and fired both of them.
Perhaps the most mind numbing thing from that article IMO, was the way Ray Farmer handled his first draft selection in 2014...The way we ended up with Justin Gilbert is just crazy. The Browns deserved what they got on that epic fail. Amazing that they would spend a commodity that valuable on a guy that NOBODY from the team had ever talked to. Even traded up from #9 to #8 to do it. After trading down to #9 from #4...smh. He was panicking worse than the Jags GM in DRAFT DAY... Wasn't that the year we were all puzzled because the Browns didn't send Farmer or any top execs to the Senior Bowl?
I like being replaced by the Raiders, as the team the media will focus on for this draft...Even watching Senior Bowl practice, the camera's go to John Gruden every other minute....It's just nice to be out from under the microscope for a change.
It'll be nicer once Mayfield & Co. put Brady's Patriots in the rearview mirror for Super Bowl wins and Seth Wickersham won't have to remind us that our franchise was a dumpster fire for six continuous seasons. (And yes, I know full well someone's going to cross out the six, put 20 - or whatever - and say "fixed it" for me.) EDIT: *It'll be, not I'll be.
