Looking forward to 2019, Browns NFL Rookie Draft

The problem is Derek Carr still sees himself as a true franchise QB. Spending #4 overall on his replacement is not going to sit well at all...Then you truly run the risk of dividing the team. I just don't like that dynamic at all...This wouldn't be like the Giants taking Haskins at the tail end of Eli's career. Carr is in his prime...

If I'm making the move for Haskins, I'd still have a veteran QB on hand. Just not the $25M man that thought this was his franchise.

Sad part is, I missed him somehow in the 2nd...I probably would have taken him then, lol. Worked out better in the end...he wasn't available in the 2nd for that second mock btw.

Sas you’re right on with Bush going to the Steelers. As a matter of fact, I believe we trade up to get him. ILB is the Steelers biggest need. The Steelers will trade up and snag one of the Devins.

I would take either of those 3 mocks for the Browns.

I was just as impressed with Isabella in the 5th round...And in the other one, Parris Campbell with the 35th pick of rd 3 was eye catching.

I wasn't really looking for WRs in either draft, but when the best player on the board is staring you in the face, you gotta take them...right?

That would give us a good problem to have in terms of depth (which I think is already a good problem that we have). I think that would ultimately make Higgins expendable next year and they would continue adding via the draft till the remove the contract of Landry and/or Beckham.

Both players would backup Jarvis Landry, moreso than Hollywood. They are totally different kinds of receivers and much different things would be expected of them.

Honestly, I am hoping that Jaelen Strong develops under Baker Mayfield. He had very little wiggle room in Houston sandwiched between DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller...both of which commands a lot of looks, when/if Fuller could stay healthy.

I fear Strong will get swallowed up here as well. I don't see a way that Jarvis and Odell don't flourish here in Cleveland...however, I would love to have another WR that could learn from them and develop in case of injuries...Either Parris Campbell or Andy Isabella could do that with little to no pressure to come in and perform right away. Callaway would be the first man up in case of injury, but I would love to have another.

I should be interesting to see how many receivers they keep... I am betting on 5, which will make that position group a very interesting one come preseason.

    Jarvis Landry
    Odell Beckham Jr.
    Antonio Callaway
    Rashad Higgins

    ???
    Ricardo Lewis
    Jaelen Strong
    Draft Pick
Damion Ratley (very important special teamer)
    Derrick Willies

I could Easily see Dorsey pulling the trigger on a WR especially if the BPA is one staring him right in the face.

I don't think the team can carry OBJ and Landry's Salaries for much longer than Baker's rookie Contract. Keep working toward next man up. Having deep roster depth doesn't hurt either.

Sorry. But I believe the 2020 draft is when we should start looking at next man up WR's. We STILL have a couple holes and absolutely need depth at a number of positions (none of which are WR).

Yes, but when those positions, I.E. LB and SS are not available in those rounds, you can't reach...

Also, in the first draft, I was able to get (2) MLB and an OLB in the draft I took Isabella...and I got a premier SS and a good MLB before I took Campbell in the other mock. I didn't ignore, or trade away assets to take either WR...they were just there, so I took them.

There are a shit ton of WRs in this draft...every shape and size...no one that stands out above all others in ALL aspects of being a WR, but the depth at that position is larger than I think I have ever seen it.

I'll just go back and sit in the corner with my dunce hat on. The last thing I would want to do is {gasp} reach for a player that would help round out the team's roster. You go right ahead and take the BPA, even if he is a WR.

Wow, chill Lym... No one is telling you your ideas are wrong/bad or any other negative connotation. I just reiterated that, despite taking a WR, I was also able to add the depth and hole filling you are suggesting..In each draft the WR was taken 3rd and 4th respectively in their mock. So two other players were taken before Campbell and 3 other players were taken before Isabella. Again, I am not dismissing your post, I am simply defending the fact that the other needs are also being taken care of. You weren't there when I did the actual simulation, so letting you know there weren't players of need available in those rounds, I thought was relevant information.

Would you feel better about posting if I simply ignored them and never made a single comment? It seems like you get very annoyed when I comment after your post.

philosophically I'm with Lym on BPA vs taking into account "needs". I believe it is always balance between those two elements that smart GMs strike.

In our case with our first pick being 49, I would argue that BPA may not be all that clear. In other words our board may actually have the WR you covet as the BPA, but has available CB, LB, within one or two positions behind him, in which case I believe "need" will take on greater weight.

I think most teams take BPA against their needs to one degree or another, thus I think the disagreement between both points is too black and white, to be realistic.

On the other hand if your next "need" is 10 slots back from the guy in front of you, then it is a "reach" pick, but even then you are making a clear choice to forgo a need guy, who is unlikely to be around 32 picks later. Not so simple IMO.

I ran into this doing some mocks. WR and RB fly up the list , are atop the BPA list and I simply look past them to fill need. Backup and possible Starter S, CB, LB, OL were more important than locking in a 5th WR who's rookie deal would coincide or be shorter than our current top 4 WR. I like getting the other positions first. If either Campbell or Isabella were there with our 3rd or 4th picks, it would be a dilemma and I could not fault anyone for taking them tho I still expect them to be buried on the depth chart while they're here.

Dorsey has a solid track record drafting so I will just roll with whatever he thinks. :)

Let's be honest with ourselves. The terms "reach" and "value" are both subjective in nature and, most likely, were brought into the draft vocabulary by the talking heads in order to validate their own opinion on where a player should be drafted. There are simply too many variables in the draft to say a guy should be drafted within +/- 10 spots.

Common sense should dictate that, if the consensus of these "experts" believe a player has a 1st or 2nd round grade, and he doesn't get drafted until the 3rd or 4th round that there was something in play that Joe "Bag-O-Donuts" Expert wasn't privy to. It can work the other direction, as well. Perhaps the Talking Heads put too much weight on off field issues or "perceived" character issues and put a 4th or 5th round grade on a player and the professional scouting departments from a given franchise believe their franchise can mitigate those issues and reap the benefits of the player's talent.

I would guess that, given the above, a more realistic window of where any given player (outside of the QB position) could be as much as +10 / -30 picks. After all is said and done, the only true way to determine "reach" or "value" is after the player has actually demonstrated his contributions (or lack thereof) on the field.
