Odie looking for another payday, just nine months after signing the $90mm deal in NY. I get it, after AB got paid, he wants to do the same, and price for WR is only going up, with Julio and Thomas coming up next year.

It rubs me the wrong way, and I trust Dorsey to do the right thing either way.
I'd go slow on guaranteed money myself, due to the number of games missed in the past couple years.

 

When listening to the radio the night of the trade, the terms of OBJs contract were reported lower (by ESPN) than what was stated. I don't recall the first 2 years, but they had the last 3 as 15 mill, 13.5, and 13.5.

Also seeing stories on how OBJ would sign ALL autographs after practice, in the rain...and even checked in on an NFLN reporter on a personal level when she was sick for 1.5 months and he relayed his gratitude towards her and her work.

Definitely not the kind of diva I want on my team.

 

It is more about guaranteed money than new money. Currently this year and $2.5M is all that is guaranteed in the contract he signed. Contracts are getting more and more guaranteed money and he feels he should get more of that guaranteed as well...and he probably will. They will most likely convert the contract to bonus money, which will then spread out the guaranteed money over a period of time for cap purposes.

So, in essence, right now the Browns owe him:

2019 $17M (guaranteed)
2020 $14.25M ($2.75M guaranteed)

All below is non-guaranteed for now..It is being reported he wants more guaranteed money like AB got..so this is likely to change.
2021 $15.75M
2022 $15M
2023 $15M

A newly structured contract could look something like:

2019 $6M signing bonus, $11M salary amount doesn't change, just the structure it was already guaranteed $17M guaranteed just like it was

sign a new contract with a $30M signing bonus, which he gets immediately

2020 $6M signing bonus, $9M salary fully guaranteed. New money of $750,000 new guarantee amount of $15M
2021 $6M signing bonus, $9.75M salary not guaranteed. No new money, but the guarantee amount went up by $6M (in his signing bonus)
2022 $6M signing bonus, $9M salary not guaranteed. No new money, but guarantee amount went up by $6M (in his signing bonus)
2023$6M signing bonus, $9M salary not guaranteed. No new money, but guarantee amount went up by $6M (in his signing bonus)

In essence, his overall money only increased by $750,000 over 5 years...but his guaranteed amount went up by $39M. You are still paying the same amount, but you are prepaying $30M in the bonus and adding another $9M of guaranteed salary in 2020.

 

Thanks Irish. Can't say I like the larger guaranteed money, but I'm certainly not willing to poison the relationship from day one either.

 

You are planning on paying him anyway, otherwise you wouldn't have traded what you did.. You are just giving the player piece of mind... doesn't stop him from holding out again when that guaranteed money runs out in 3 years....or the team cutting him for that matter.
