Safe to say Alexander Ovechkin has led the league in misses every year he has played.

Taking undisciplined shots for low percentage areas doesn't mean he's not a sniper.

    -
    That's EXACTLY what it means.
    -
If OV is a sniper, so were those guaranteed to miss Stormtroopers from Star Wars.
    -
Do you want people of that accuracy level to be snipers for your country?
    -
OV is a Machine Gunner NOT a sniper.

The more shots you take, the more misses you'll have naturally. The goalies are too good to let most goals past them. And many are blocked before they get to the net.

When a team is having trouble scoring goals, most NHL coaches will preach shoot the puck at the net, you never know what will happen. And it's sound advice because I've seen and I'm sure many others have seen weird goals get past the goalie. And I can tell you from watching the NHL Network and Penguins games that shots that shouldn't go in, DO GO IN! All you have to do is watch a season of MAF playing goal and you will see weird goals get past him that shouldn't have. I can remember a couple years ago when a shot from the blue line got past Fleury. And I've see it before from other goalies also. I also remember a game the year the NHL wanted to speed up the game, so they had quicker face offs. One was so quick that the face off winner won it and it went to the goal from the Red Line and went in because the goalie wasn't paying attention. I've seen pucks skip over goalies sticks. This is why it is never a bad idea to try and get a shot on net no matter what. I'm not saying to try and score from the other end of the ice now. That would be kind of ridiculous and an icing call if it didn't hit the net area. But I did see a face off win from the Red Line that got past a goalie because he never expected the puck to be dropped that fast to speed up the game.

A sniper is a highly trained marksman. By that definition 12% is not a sniper. Bob, if you say he is then you better be willing to accept that Crosby is a sniper or Malkin, since both have a higher Goal % than "Ovi"

    Crosby has a career 15%
    Malkin 12.8%
    Ovechkin 12.2% Career

Put my mind at ease and tell me that you are kidding though! otherwise I will call a conspiracy and wonder how many gold foil rolls he bought you!

Martin Riggs has to be up there, ... I hear he did a man in Laos at 1000 yards in high wind.

  10. that don't impress me much, i bet he was using a rifle. roger murtaugh, on the other hand, can hit a guy between the eyes from 100 yards with a short barrel .38 - now THAT is a sniper.

  11. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    Martin Riggs never trained OV.

    Wait!
    -
    Someone trained OV?

  13. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    Murtaugh did.

But he's only good at close range

I found this online. How true it is, I don't know.

    NHL's Best Shooters
The league's top snipers based on true talent shooting percentage since 2005-06 (minimum 1,000 shots).

Player Goals Shots True Talent Sh%
    Thomas Vanek 211 1346 15.2%
    Teemu Selanne 188 1214 15.0%
    Sidney Crosby 215 1398 15.0%
    Dany Heatley 247 1616 14.9%
    Mike Knuble 168 1094 14.9%
    Danny Briere 161 1071 14.6%

As you can see Malkin isn't in the group but I would consider him a sniper just because Knuble, according to this info, is considered one. My own opinion. Although I always thought Knuble was a decent player and seemed to score against the Pens every time he played against them.....Maybe that's where his high % comes from, haha

And as you can see, Crosby is considered a top sniper Matthew!!!!!! This is from 2005-'06 too now. As you can see many top goal scorer's are not on that list and are probably considered snipers......Notice how Stamkos is not even on that list either and he is a true sniper. Unless he hasn't taken 1,000 shots yet because that was the year Crosby was drafted and Stamkos was drafted in later year.....Not sure how long after Crosby, but it can be looked up.....

Is shooting % for top line top pair players more or less meaningful than +/-.

  18. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

less, by far. shooting percentage is useless, +/- still has some bearing in my opinion. any outside the house shooter will obviously have a much lower shooting percentage and anyone that plays in empty net situations will have a better shooting percentage.

  19. everyone knows kevin willis was a better shooter than isaiah thomas.

  20. It doesn't matter because all goals scored are complete, blind luck
