How so? I was singing the overratedness of overeight, not any Pens praises.

I was 99% just messing with you. The other 1% is for not cutting him some slack after finally getting there but this is the Ovenchicken thread.

What I can't understand, is why some of you brush off the fact the OV's goal totals are mostly the product of him getting more chances to score than normal hockey players.

The first year OV was in the league that he didn't register the most shots, he had 12 fewer goals than the guy who did and 44 less points.

This conversation is as stupid as the qb grateness one.

They both grate; in their own way. Don't they?

OVs 32, he has 607 goals, if he plays another ten years with an average of 30 goals per year, he'll surpass the great one.

I know, it's stupid that people can't admit, getting way more chances to do the same thing or less, as a basis of greatness, is almost as dumb as giving credit to a QB for failing on football's greatest stage.

Does Pitt have a team playing in the basketball or hockey finals. Ohh shit your city is so shitty they don't even have basketball. And the Big O beat your hockey team

Almost always shots on net are good and not regrettable. Getting/creating chances, possessing and moving the puck up ice with shots on net is the goal.

Better players in the league are usually top 5 in shots.
Ovenchicken, Burns, P. Kane, Seguin, Tarasenko, teh Phil, Karlsson, Bergeron all top 5 in SOG over the last few years. It was Mario, Hull, Yzerman, Bourque, Coffey etc... back then and before that it was Richard, Howe, Espo.

Terrible Ovenchicken D is a separate thing. I’m not defending the player here, I’m defending that the SOG stat is not negative and never has been.

I'm liking that there's some fresh commentary from those never heard from before on the hockey boards.

Keep it up! And, bring your friends.

Just off the cuff, I could have fine tuned it if I had spent more than 3 minutes on it, but it was late, which is also why I didn't do the whole song.

    This just in ....

NHL.com who all this playoffs, had a bunch of different pictures of Ovechkin in their section "The Quest for the Stanley Cup", has removed his picture and replaced it with Fleury.

Also just in, Alex Ovechkin finally after 5 more games and 38 more shots* has scored ONE more goal than the long time legend Veteran Jake Guentzel, to lead the playoffs in goals, to still trail the goal leader by 3 goals**

    * - in 72 shots, 4 shots more than TWICE the number it took Guentzel to get his

** - who needed only 44 shots to get 3 more goals than OV (72)

    What a sniper!

    Player A - 30 SOG, 5 G

    Player B - 60 SOG, 5 G

Doesn't really matter how you get there, its the end results that are important. Its also subject to the when and what type of goal was scored... GWG, PPG, SHG...etc, etc. Shooting percentage can be mis-leading also. Many factors involved and I would be happy with either 'A' or 'B' on my team.

The goals work out the same, but your label of “sniper” will lose its glue and should fall off if you’re hitting 1 of 12 shots v 1 of 6 shots. To put more directly, yes, Ovul8r can score goals, but he is NOT, I repeat, he is NOT a sniper.

It does matter how you got there if you are bandying words like "sniper" around to characterize goal scoring skill.
Sure, Ovary scores lots of goals, but it's not because he is some unique talent. No "great" had to back up dumptrucks of pucks at the net to do the same thing.

I'd still call him a great hockey player even if he's a puck hog or not, he gets the job done. I believe the bottom line is scoring goals and that he does.

I'm sure some of the 'greats' in your book, took a bunch of shots also. Maybe not on the level of #8, but still, someone will be a top the leaderboard when it comes to SOG.

Jack Johnson the defenseman was always shooting on goal, but he couldn't buy a goal... Ovi at least gets some positive production from all of his shots.

I'm not sure what else I can add to this particular conversation, just sharing an opinion, that I think Ovi is indeed a great hockey player and his propensity to shoot a lot doesn't diminish any thing from being a great player. Truly will be in the Hall someday and he's something special regardless.
