U.S. Senator continues to call out Bettman over concussion stance

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal continues to call out NHL commissioner Gary Bettman over the league?s stance on concussions.

Bettman recently penned a 24-page letter in response to questions from Blumenthal, stating, above all, that no definitive link had been made between concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE.

"Common sense and mounting scientific evidence show there are warning signs and clear links between brain trauma and concussions and degenerate neurological disease later in life, including CTE," Blumenthal said Monday, according to comments published by the Hartford Courant.

"I?m here to call on the NHL to be on the right side of history and health and to show a sustained and serious care for their players in addressing this problem."

Bettman rebutted Blumenthal?s claims in his earlier letter, detailing the NHL and NHL Players? Association?s attempts to inform players on the "seriousness" of head injuries and concussions as well as the potential lasting effects. He pointed to the creation of the NHL/NHLPA concussion program in 1997, along with repeated efforts educating players on the health risks posed by concussions.

Bettman added that "a causal link between concussions and CTE has not been demonstrated."

"As it is, to this day ? let alone prior to the start of the NHL/NHLPA Concussion Program in 1997 ? no medical study has ever concluded that concussions suffered by players who have played hockey at the NHL level can or do cause degenerative ?brain diseases,"? Bettman wrote.

The NHL is currently facing a class-action concussion lawsuit. The commissioner said "misconceptions" had been propagated in the media by the plaintiffs? counsel.

Blumenthal, who is up for re-election in November in Connecticut, dismissed such claims.

TORONTO ? NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is brushing aside the latest criticism from U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal over the league?s stance on concussions.

Blumenthal said earlier this week that the NHL, and Bettman in particular, were on the wrong side of history regarding the connection between concussions and long-term brain damage.

Bettman reiterated in an interview Wednesday that he wasn?t "going to have a public debate about this."

Bettman wrote a thorough 23-page letter in response to questions from Blumenthal regarding the NHL?s stance on concussions and CTE. He suggested that no definitive link had been made between the two.

The Senator said that common sense and mounting scientific evidence show there are warning signs and clear links between brain trauma and concussions and degenerate neurological disease later in life. (Canadian Press)

NHL adds Meldonium to banned substances list

The NHL has added meldonium to its list of banned substances.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the addition in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday. It was first reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

The change goes into effect for the upcoming season. The NHL and NHL Players? Association had to agree to add meldonium to its list of prohibited substances.

Daly says that decision was made for the same reason the World Anti-Doping Agency banned meldonium on Jan. 1.

Tennis star Maria Sharapova and swimmer Yulia Efimova have tested positive in recent months for the endurance-boosting drug. Sharapova is appealing her two-year ban.

I am not defending E. Kane, but I am remindful of the P. Kane case. The prosecutors are going to have a hard time with the trespassing charge. In the night in question, E. Kane was not a mere patron of the establishment. He was a celebrity employee; it is dubious that the bouncer had the authority to evict an employee.

If some beat off colleague threw me out of my office I would welcome my litigable opportunity, that I know.

BUFFALO, N.Y. ? Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane says a woman?s civil suit claiming he seriously injured her during an attack in his hotel room is meant solely to harass him.

Kane calls the 21-year-old woman?s allegations ?a sham? in a counterclaim filed in state Supreme Court last week.

The filing, first reported by The Buffalo News on Tuesday, seeks dismissal of the July 1 complaint and legal costs.

The woman claims she suffered emotional trauma and required multiple surgeries and blood transfusions after the December encounter. In March, prosecutors declined to charge Kane with any crimes following an investigation into a possible sexual assault.

Kane has pleaded not guilty to harassment, disorderly conduct and trespass stemming from a separate incident in June during which he allegedly grabbed three women by the hair and neck. Kane's next scheduled court appearance for that case is Oct. 31.

He's scheduled to report to training camp on Thursday.

It appears likely that E. Kane is going to have the harassment charges against him dismissed.

Other than the obvious fact that he has a bison and two swords on his sweater, I am not a great fan of this Kane. I do lament the situation in Buffalo where there is a fairly small, but very preditory, cadre of young females that attempt to extort athletes there.

The leash is going to be short for Evander since he has regularly put himself in a position to allow this to happen. With legal issues behind him, the Sabres could comply with the wishful thinking and move him. He has undeniable talent, but the Sabres are deeper at F than many realize.

BTW, I do not want my words about Kane to be misconstrued. I do think he's a dirtball. But, there's a very big difference between being a dirtball and a criminal.

Report: Former Sens executive sues owner Eugene Melnyk, alleging ?abusive? behavior

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is back in the news again ? although this time, it has nothing to do with a feud involving Sidney Crosby.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, a former team executive by the name of Peter O?Leary has recently sued the club and Melnyk for $1.55 million. Per the report, the lawsuit alleges abusive behavior from Melnyk to club executives during a particularly difficult time for ticket sales in 2016.

    More from The Citizen:

O?Leary?s 23-page claim provides a rare glimpse insides the Senators? front office dynamics, revealing not only dysfunction but also alleged abusive behaviour by Melnyk.

Specifically, the claim alleges Melnyk ?at times used profanity and levelled insults at executive team members, including constantly calling into question their competency. Mr. Melnyk sent abusive emails to the executive team and frequently threatened to dismiss them.?

O?Leary was hired on Aug. 21, 2014 to be the Senators? chief marketing officer and vice-president of ticketing and was fired by Melnyk on Dec. 12, 2016, according to O?Leary?s statement of claim.

Melnyk and his Capital Sports holdings group, represented by Toronto lawyer Laurie Jessome, have filed a notice to defend. Contacted by the Citizen?on Thursday, Melnyk said via email, ?We believe it is inappropriate to comment on litigation before the courts.?

Melnyk purchased the Senators in 2003.

On numerous occasions dating back several years, he has denied the club is for sale (2012 and 2016), however there have been reports he has also absorbed financial losses of more than $100 million since he became the owner.

Last year, prior to the end of the regular season, Melnyk directed some strong public criticism toward then head coach Dave Cameron, who was fired once the regular season ended.

Interesting to note here, the NHL is named in the suit along with Wideman. The league already coming out and claiming that plans were underway to can Henderson at the end of the year. This will get ugly real fast as lawyers on both sides battle it out.
