saw the wolf of wall street. super long at 3 hrs. if it wasn't for dicaprio it would be unwatchable. if half of this stuff really happened, than this guy makes charlie sheen look like a Saint. total craziness. good flick - just over the top and long. im shocked dicaprio didnt win an Oscar as this was his best acting role so far.
i'm about halfway thru watching Cannibal Holocaust. a couple of thoughts: first, the movie came with hardcoded dutch subs. watching the dutch translation while listening to english has been educational, and also strange at times. they translated "mutilation" into "mishandling" lol. and in the US, i'd be surprised if the movie could get away with an R rating. some pretty explict shots of both naked men and women, showing things that... let's just say the mysterious folk on the MPAA ratings board don't approve of
i got it because i saw it pretty high up on a few lists of horror movies, and i'd never heard of it. i'm about halfway thru, as i said, and so far, i'm still waiting for what made people take note of it. there have been some graphic scenes, but u gotta do more than that to set yourself apart from the crowd, imo. to me, a couple of grisly scenes doesn't qualify as a holocaust. hopefully, the action ramps up in the second half. if LOTS of people don't start getting killed and eaten, i'm gonna be disappointed.
ok, finished watching it. i'd like to focus on the good things about this movie. if there had been any, i would. it's a shock film, plain and simple. it makes friday the 13th look like a masterpiece.
haha old school. im not a horror fan at all. every movie now seems the same. the old cheesy ones gave me terrible nightmares and after seeing death wish 3, i swore someone was in my room at night for months as i kept seeing the door open and close by fractions of inches!! i heard the conjuring was really good. don't know if i can watch it.
i love a good horror movie. too bad this wasn't one of them. i'm convinced the only reason it made it onto those lists was the graphic nature of it. some truly gross scenes. also, u know the typical disclaimer "no animals were harmed in the making of this film" ? no way could they have said that here. i remember at least 4 scenes where an animal was killed, and i'd bet their entire budget that those scenes weren't faked. one thing that makes a horror movie good is when u feel fear on behalf of the supposed good guys. in this case, the more i saw of them, the more i thought "geez, someone kill these losers already".
hahaha- the only thing that makes a good horror movie to me is the blonde bimbo showing off her tats bf she dies.
Two TCM movies last night - both with Rod Steiger. "The Pawnbroker" (1964) is about a Jewish professor who is taken to a concentration camp, where he sees his children die and his wife raped. Now in the U.S., he has become emotionally sterile, not caring about anything or anyone, really just existing day-to-day. "In the Heat of the Night" - no explanation necessary. One of the the all-time great movies.
Attitudes have changes quite considerably in the 45+ years since "In the Heat of the Night" was released, so I don't you could make the same movie today. But speaking of racism: saw "Edge of the City" with Sidney Portier and John Cassavetes. Had to be one of the first films that depicted a friendship between a black man and a white man. Apparently the film didn't make a lot of money (might even have lost money) because it simply couldn't be released in the South.
yeah axe but with all the racial hatred now and peope very quick to riot and al sharpton and jesse jackson getting ready to go on tv - in the heat of the night would be bashed now.
there is less racial tension now than there was in the 60s - i don't even think it's close. this movie would be less controversial now, not more.
