Had a foot injury this weekend, so I was laid up watching a couple movies. Mostly independent movies I've been wanting to see for a while.

Alan Partridge - Got some real laughs out of this one. Not a great movie, but it definitely had its moments. I'd recommend a watch.

Alter Egos - Crappy movie. Thought there was promise... there was not. Awful, really crappy movie. You'd have to look for it to watch it, and I guess that's for good reason.

Cabin in the Woods - Awesome movie. Great tribute to all the great horror movie tropes, but still a good movie in itself. Didn't ever hide what it was - embraced it, and nailed it. Funny, surprising... I don't think I would call it "scary", but it certainly didn't fall into the traps a lot of movies do ("Why are you going in there?", etc), which is great enough in its own right. Definitely recommended.

Saw several more, but don't quite remember which off the top of my head. Watched the Usual Suspects again, because its worth watching over and over.

I've wanted to see the newer Lord of the Rings installments - I'll look to see just how different they are from the books.

i liked the first half of cabin in the woods. the second half was nuts.

If I went to the library today and could get just 2 movies, what do you fellers recommend? I like war flicks and historical stuff, but am open to experiment with new idea's and suggestions.

Very interesting suggestions, Lulz. I appreciate it. They both look interesting and completely different than what I even had in mind. Fortunately, I havnt seen either one. I havnt seen a good movie in forever... I think the last movie that I sat all the way through was, 'Saving Private Ryan'. I did catch a series on History that I enjoyed too, it was called, 'A Band of Brothers'. I might see about watching that again.

There are some good old documentary's on YouTube that have been fun to watch also. The old US propaganda news reels of the second world war interest me.

I'm just planning ahead for another long, cold, extremely snowy Winter. Usually i spend my Winters drinking ... a lot. Now, I need sober stuff to do. :)

  5. my pleasure, will. they just happen to be 2 of my favorite movies to boot ;)

i see they've now done a remake of Zulu. originality, thy name is NOT "hollywood". i'll probably never watch the remake, i like the original too much. iirc, it's michael caine's first major role, as "flaming leftenant bromhead" :)

zulu is good stuff. once again lulz pulls a gem out of his hat.

  7. ok, whew. it turns out the new zulu is unrelated. but i'm not gonna apologize to them, they're guilty of more than enough without this one.

  8. i just realized last night that i haven't finished this one yet. obviously made a great impression.

some solid war movies makes me glad i wasn't there.

platoon, saving private ryan, hamburger hill, the sands of iwo jima, zulu and many others makes me realize, i am not fit for war. my Dad served as a Medic in Germany in the Battle of the Bulge and won a Bronze Star. My Uncle was a paratrooper of Japan and won 2 Purple Hearts and attacked many Japanese and gun platforms etc.

    i am not that strong...

Saw "Lemmy," the documentary about legendary Motorhead frontman Ian Fraser Kilmister, better known to the world as "Lemmy." Real good behind-the-scenes stuff, interviews with famous (and not-so-famous) modern as well as aging metal musicians and rockers (James Hetfield, Kirk Hammet, Dave Grohl, Nikki Sixx, Dee Snider, Ozzy Obourne, Marky Ramone).

Astounding that Lemmy's still alive, let alone rocking it with the best of them.

  11. 30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010)

not a fan of vampire movies in general, but i thought the original was pretty good. this one, not so much.

high point: a vampire attempts to enter the motel room our heroine, survivor of the first film, is in. she's meeting with a handful of vampire hunters who are trying to recruit her, and they know the bad guy's coming. as he tries to look in, they jam the door closed on him, leaving his head still in the room. 3 people proceed to empty their handguns into his head. one of the hunters looks at the heroine and says "time to check out, huh?"

Checked out "Filth" with James McAvoy. What a trip. A fun ride. If you don't mind feeling depraved and oout of your gourd for a while (assuming you were a halfway decent person to start with), check it out. Really enjoyed it.

Loved "Seven Psychopaths", so went back and watched the director's earlier work, "In Bruges". Fun movie. Not as rewarding throughout as the newer directorial work, but had a strong payoff with plenty of intense and funny moments getting there. Another one I'm glad I watched, and wouldn't mind watching again.

Heard good things about "In Bruges," but haven't seen it. Definitely want to look it up, if for no other reason than I've actually been to Bruges.

dline-the previews for filth look crazy. i have it on my netflix que. i hope it's not wanna those lsd induced moves etc. it looks like it though!

in bruges is very funny and colin farrell is solid in it. i find that if he's not trying to carry the movie, he works out so much better. look at him in horrible bosses. funny as hell and in the credits, his scene with the pharmacist is even funnier. i still think his best movie is cassandra's dream with ewan mcgregor. it's a woody allen movie, but not what you think. both actors and tom wilkinson are terrific. again, farrell isn't carrying the movie, so his acting stands out.

    saw captain american: winter soldier.

i don't know why i bring myself to watch these comic book movies. besides christopher nolan's batman reboot and man of steel, all these movies are really over the top and lousy. and there's so many more to come. hollywood doesn't wanna make a solid movie anymore bc they can just make a crappy comic book movie with all cgi and make $300 million! pu!

saw season 1 of the blacklist. good be a great show, but it's just ok.

SAW DIVERGENT last night. no idea what was going on the the factions. kind of silly. some how 2 more sequals are being made. thank God Shailene Woodley is cute or else the movie would really suck ass.

Saw Bag Men with Robert Deniro and John Cusack. Terrible. Another DeNiro mailed in check! Jeez. I need better movie picking parameters.

No, it's definitely not a "Something crazy for the sake of being crazy" kind of movie. I wouldn't call it "LSD induced". And it's not one of those dark, slow, ponderous descents into madness, either. It's a really fun, aggressive, and ultimately 'filthy' mix of the two. Just be prepared to feel like a bad human being afterwards, because the characters in it certainly are.

thanks dline. hopefully there will be some filthy chicks getting naked in it. haha

You get a couple shots of this and that, but nothing worth mentioning.
