Jason Campbell's two-year contract is worth $3.75 million, with $500,000 in guarantees. It's significantly less than what he made last year. Campbell will be given a shot to compete with Brandon Weeden in training camp, but the Browns don't have any commitment to him beyond this season. He's due just $1.50 million in 2013.
I actually REALLY like this signing. Jason Campbell has some skills and has won some games. Lets not forget that 2 years ago he had the Raiders in position to challenge for the Division title 1 week before the trade deadline he gets hurt and BAM the Raiders in typical fashion panic and over pay for an overated player in Carson Palmer. Campbell hasn't gotten a lot of breaks, he has had muitiple coordinators when he was the starting quarterback and has gone from one disfunctional franchise to the next. I actually think he gives the Browns the best chance to win right now. Is he the long term answer for you guys at QB? Probably not, but I think at the very least he is an upgrade at the back up QB position for you guys for the next time one of the Steelers gives your QB a concussion.
Yeah, I think the Campbell signing was a good one also. He can actually push Weeden and very well may win an open competition. Campbell was ruined in Washington by having a different OC with a different philosophy every year he was there. Then he went to Oakland and was doing well until the injury. This was a good move for the Browns
To update this "open" competition between Weeds and Campbell: The Browns plan to give Brandon Weeden "most" of the first-team quarterback reps in offseason workouts. In other words, this won't be an even competition with Jason Campbell. Campbell is in Cleveland to "push" Weeden, but the latter has a firm grip on the job. Per the Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto, the Browns do not believe any draft-eligible quarterback is worthy of the No. 6 overall pick. The "assumption" is Weeden will start Week 1, with Jason Campbell behind him. The Browns hope to "immerse" Weeden in an offense highlighting his downfield passing ability from the shotgun. And say goodbye to McCoy: The Cleveland Plain Dealer considers the Browns "doubtful" to find a trade partner for Colt McCoy. His $2.35 million base salary is rich for a borderline backup-caliber talent, and no teams view McCoy as even a viable training camp competitor. The league is also well aware McCoy is not in the Browns' plans, particularly after the Jason Campbell signing. Expect Cleveland to release McCoy by early May.
Good ol' Mary Kay . . . right on top of things once again. She's also the "beat reporter" who, on NFL AM, picked Geno Smith at #6 in their beat reporter mock draft. Sheesh . . . my phuquing dog could do better than her.
If the Browns believe Campbell was the best they could get in a vet QB, then there's no pressure on Weeden. Campbell's a journeyman QB at best. Disappointed in the effort here. Rok
Thanks, Duff, but I didn't. Found out by the folks like Bluez and others from the old B&G on Facebook. Bluez told me about MNC, so I thought I'd join you good folks. Besides, I couldn't let Lyman be the oldest geezer on this thread. =) Rok
