Thumbs down is off - Booooo, poor poor sensitive feelings. So freaking sad that things have come to this.
You can now embed tweets within a post using the tweets url. Click on the twitter button in the bbcode bar above the posting window then place the url in the tag - [ tweet=url goes here][/tweet ] This is the result - [twitter=https://twitter.com/NFL/status/799270386349142016?lang=en][/twitter]
Sol, it's to keep trolls (like you know who) from blowing up a poster by using the button. I'm glad the thumbs down was removed. If someone has a beef they can always go to Tim with it.
When you click the tweet button it will put up the tags. Inside the first tag you will need to use the tweet url - [ tweet=The URL goes right after the '=' ][/tweet ] You have to use the tweet url and not the url from the twitter users timeline. If you look at the bottom of the tweet you will see three dots. Click on those dots and it will ask if you want to copy the tweet url. That's the one you want to use.
By all that's holy ... I DID IT!! Thanks Boss. I totally did not know about the 3 dots. I've never clicked that before. Now I have to spread the news!!
It's like YOU said babyfan, balance. What kind of message does that send that you can only approve or do nothing, but you can't disapprove? It gives a poster who posts an idiotic idea, for example "canabalism is good", the idea that there is nothing wrong with what they posted. Seems Retarded, like a participation medal.
You're missing one option that has always been available to our members Sol. They CAN do something besides hit the neg button. They can put their thoughts and opinions into words and help to continue and further the discussion that way. I find the following to be true: The members who most often complain about getting neg values are the ones who do much of the 'negging' that we see. When someone else gives them one it's almost like it's an affront to their pride or something. I think all the negative button created was anger and challenge instead of creating more discussion. The purpose behind a website like this IS discussion. Negative disapproval only serves one purpose; and that is for the member who uses it to feel like he's putting someone's ideas or thoughts down without having to give a reason or rationale behind their actions. Ipso facto ... cowardly. I like to test and challenge people's posts. That is not accomplished by clicking a button, it is accomplished by adding (in a positive way) to the discussion and perhaps learning more myself.
While most of that may be true, the fact remains, that most people can't afford the time to respond every post, not even every post that evokes an opinion. What if you only want to say, not just thumbs up, I agree, (I mean, this option is still available, you can say attaboy, and post nothing further adding to the discussion.), but just want to say, thumbs down, I disagree, and don't want to really get into the topic. It doesn't mean you aren't interested. It could mean you are posting from work and don't have the time. It could mean that you want to think about the words that explain how you feel. I have given thumbs up and thumbs down, but why get upset over thumbs down? The only power it has is what you give it.
Another point is it gives you an idea of the value + popularity of a poster on the site, better than straight up only postitive response. I mean who is really a better poster in the following hypothetical? Poster A 1,000 posts 300 up votes 0 down votes Poster B 1,000 posts 400 up votes 600 down votes In a thumbs up only system, Poster B appears better, ( 400 > 300) but in a thumbs up and thumbs down system, (300 >> -200) it is much more easily elucidated.
You know, it might encourage more discussion, if the quote function only went 1 person back in the chain. I tend to stop reading when it gets too large.
I think if the button were used the way it was intended there wouldn't be many problems. The trouble is that some people are more sensitive and see it as a slight or a slap in the face. That may not be your reaction or mine but it seems to be quite common here. Most of the Bears members (maybe all of them) don't have any reaction to getting a negative mark from others, except perhaps to laugh. Others get instantly angry, upset and defensive. That increases the number of complaint messages that Tim has to handle. So perhaps by eliminating the thumbs down we are creating a situation where people have to spend more time in discussion to make their points. That's exactly the purpose of this site. And honestly Sol, if you want to simply disagree without justifying your opinion, you can simply post that. It takes 30 seconds to write, "I don't agree, this is wrong/dangerous/idiotic/stupid" and you're letting people know who you are and how you feel. That makes everything more adult, mature and shows personal ownership over your words. That's just how I see it, your poison may differ lol
That's a good point too. Not trimming posts is either a result of laziness or ignorance and it does get pretty confusing.
You know, I actually like that the way it is. If I join a conversation late and can read the majority of the discussion in one, long, cluster-phuque of a post, it saves me going back and reading each post individually!
That's a good point too Manosteel. You can do a quick read and know exactly what's been said in a discussion.
