Thank you. Canadians also pronounce it as baloney but I'm not sure why. It could be laziness. So, the “bologna” spelling comes from the Italian city it's named for. As for the shift from pronouncing it “bo-LO-nya” to saying “baloney,” there are different theories. ... Liberman also referenced the theory that “baloney” may derive from the Polari slang word “balonie.”
I'm sorry I caused this thread to go off the rails and descend to the lowly levels of discussing how to pronounce the names of deli meats. (Bows head in shame)
Because you're one of the AntiDeli crowd. I think gabagool sounds like someone with a mouth full of the stuff trying to say capicola. Or maybe Mushmouth from the old Fat Albert Cartoons.
YouGov poll released today reveals that most republicans blame Biden for the Capitol invasion. Too many people simply do not live in reality. I remember several years ago (pre-Trump) hearing a progressive activist lament the fact that so many Americans were politically disengaged. If we could only engage them, she thought, we could create a movement for real progressive change. At the time I agreed with her. Little did we know that one person who could in fact engage them politically turned out to be Trump. In 2016 you had so many stories of first time voters in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, inspired to come out and vote for Trump. We need them to go away. We need them to return to being politically disengaged. Because their delusions could very well bring down this great nation.
You guys are probably going to jump all over for saying this but here goes. Now, I have no idea who these people are or where they came, but looking at the pictures that Bww put up and others online, something just doesn't look right. Back in the day, I went to a couple of those "Tea Party" events. You walk in and look around and all you see are everyday people. The same types you see at the gas station, grocery store, or the bank. Look at these guys. They just don't seem to fit the mold. Something's going on. We just don't know what it is yet.
They just don't seem to fit the mold. Something's going on. We just don't know what it is yet. SCS they are Trump Supporters.
With Confederate flags? Anyone can buy a MAGA hat or a Trump flag. But the Stars and Bars? You can't walk into Walmart and pick one of those up. And they had a lot of them. Like I said. Something doesn't look right.
Being Italian I think this is being overthought. There is ONE part in that article that is on the money. It is that it was shortened and called "Bologn" But more like "Bolong" with a VERY soft g sound. So when the product was getting spread to English countries it wasn't called Bologna like the city but an easier to say English ending was added and the easiest one is the e sound a y makes. Blame the Italians for shortening their words? In the end it was certainly the Americans wanting to say it easier, whatever the reason was.
I don't know if that's how it works in your neighborhood, but basically anywhere in the south, you can buy a Confederate flag on the street corner. I see them more than the American flag, here in certain parts of Florida. Saw them for sale in all forms when we went to Louisiana for vacation. Family in Arizona and Texas confirm the same there. I know you want to drum up a conspiracy, but what happened here is pretty straightforward. Edit - have you never heard of the internet? Come on, now.
Trump quite literally took the microphone Wednesday and riled up a huge group of people...told them not to accept the results of the election....told them to fight and take back their country. Then they stormed the Capitol. So anyone that is confused what happened....probably needs to have that surgery where a doctor takes your head out of your ass for you because you aren’t capable of doing it yourself.
