Bob "Pink Eye" Costas is a great sports journalist. Legendary. He deserves the awards he has attained and in my opinion will remain deserving until a pile of dirt falls on him too.
although HOF voting is closed, at 30% of votes counted, it's a record breaking HOF class with 7 players plus pink eye getting in. Now I saw a different report with Mussina not getting in but the others were. What's more shocking is Bonds and Clemens jump up to 70% and Schilling is at 69%. Wow. To me you can't vote for some steroid users and not all of them. yes Bonds and Clemens have more accolades than the others but they all cheated the game. Palmeiro is not even on the ballot any longer and he was 500/3000 ! Not fair to me.
For the second time in four years but just the fifth time ever in a voting process that dates back to 1936, the Baseball Writers' Association of America is welcoming four players into Cooperstown's hallowed Hall all at once. Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome and Trevor Hoffman compose the BBWAA's 2018 National Baseball Hall of Fame class, which was announced on Wednesday night on MLB Network and MLB.com. Jones and Thome were inducted in their first year of eligibility, marking the third time this decade that a BBWAA class includes multiple first-ballot Hall of Famers.
Watched a lot of coverage last night on this. I'm a little shocked Martinez didn't make it and a bigger jump by Mussina, Bonds and Clemens. The panel thinks Edgar and Mussina make it in next year. Edgar yes, Mussina needs 12% more votes. Not so sure he gets it. None of the panel now thinks Bonds and Clemens will get in. Huh? Martinez jumped 20%+ in 2 yrs and Bonds and Clemens can't ? In 2020 the HOF Class is Jeter. The rest of the eligible players are not a lock. In 2021 there are no locks, unless Ortiz is on there. They have a chance. Costas and Gammons think Schilling should be in the HOF already. Well, sadly he's not and may never get in. But like Bonds and Clemens - the future HOF class in -23 yrs is lackluster at best. I am more shocked that no one thinks the late Roy Halladay has a chance next year to get in the HOF. Dominate 10 yrs in the hardest division. 200+ wins. 2 Cy Youngs. 3.38 ERA. 2000+ K's. No hitter in his playoff debut and perfect game. What else does he have to do ? Overall - it's a great class. I mean it's 6 guys I watched growing up in the last 20 yrs. Thome played for the Phils too, so I saw him live a few times and him coming to Philly opened the door to other players coming to the Phils bf their 08 WS Title when no good FA wanted to come to Philly. Just a humble guy from Peoria, Il. Happy for him and the other HOF'ers. Happy for Trammell and Morris too. I thought Morris should be in on the regular vote. Happy to see him in on the Veterans vote. The funny thing is Ted Simmons was 1-2 % vote away from getting in with Trammell and Morris. It could be 7 guys! Wow.
Vlad going in as the 1st Angel. A bit sad that the reason he did though was because the club is active. He is on record saying he'd likely go Angels for that reason, otherwise it would have been the Expos.
not true in all cases. the HOF does have a say in this... http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2018/01/how_does_the_mlb_hall_of_fame.html
?? the HOF has an input to the decision is all I was trying to say. I know some HOF'ers like Catfish Hunter have no team and the cap is blank.
All the Hall truly has is veto power. Let's say you played 15 years with the Twins and then went to the Yankees for two years and won a WS there before retiring. You wan't to be a yankee because you won there and the Hal will say hell no we know you were a twin. Or even worse, you didn't win as a yankee but loved it there and wanted to wear that cap. They'll veto that of course. They woiuldn't veto something like Angels vs Expos for Vlad.
Understood, I was just talking about the part where it said they're putting Vlad in as an Angel b/c the Expos aren't an active club, but they just had someone go in as an Expos last year.
and he was saying last week that he went to the playoffs with LA and did more with them like win a MVP.
He's always flipflopped. Now that he made a decision he is going to say all the reasons he made the choice. a couple years back though he said he would probably pick Montreal because he had his best season there, grew up there and meant more then, but the year after he said he was leaning Angels because the Expos arne't around. I mena look the Angels can praise him and all that while the Expos can only be done by some fans and media.
Omar Vizquel is the greatest defensive player to ever play this game. His work at SS was every bit as valuable to those Cleveland Indians teams as Jim Thome's bat was....How the hell could Vizquel only get 37% of the voters? My gawd, I've lost all respect.. I'm happy for Jim Thome. He deserves it. But so does Omar, and the voters should be ashamed... The G.O.A.T.
over the weekend, my buddy, who is a huge metrics guy, said the mlb network was speaking of future HOF'ers and said Chase Utley based on WAR and ob% etc will get in one day, but Jimmy Rollins is on the fence. i want to say this post is NOT towards U DOG. I am not trying to anger him in any way, but i feel as a sports fan i must say this - this is why sabermetrics blow! chase utley IS NOT A HALL OF FAME PLAYER and im a Phillies fan. I don't care what his war is or on base % or slugging % ! When the HOF denies Jeff Kent, who is the all-time HR leader for 2B and won an MVP, over Utley, sorry but Utley is not even close! Utley doesn't have 1900 hits. his stats aren't much of anything but bc of 3 sabermetric stats he's in bc he had a better war or slugging than everyone in the 2000's but Albert Pujols? I don't give a shit. Utley is a no brainer-he's not a HOF'er. His bad hip killed his stats and career. he's not a HOF'er. Jimmy Rollins did more, has better stats, won Gold Gloves and a MVP and he's on the fence ? Wow. Rollins is the Phillies all-time hits leader. He won Gold Gloves and has better offensive stats than a few SS in the HOF now. Easily comparable to Barry Larkin and is on the fence? Another reason why I hate sabermetrics. 3 stats don't make a career !
