A Gretzky past his prime needs a good supporting cast. I still remember that finals with the habs in '93. After McSorley got that penalty for the illegal stick, the whole series turned around.
that was huge. i don;t think the great one was past his prime in 1993. he was 33. he was injured and had 65 pts. the year bf he had 121 pts and the year after 93, he had 130 pts. he had over 100 pts at the age of 35 and he lead the league in assists at the ages of 36 and 37 ! doesn't sound washed up to me.
shit he set the bar so high even he couldn't top it again but as for the rest of the nhl, he wasn't washed up. he held his own very well in his mid-30's.
Sept. 15th 1991 is when it all changed for Grerzky. It was the Canada Cup 1991, Canada vs US. Gary Suter hits him from behind and fks his back up. He has a drop off from 163 pts to 121 that season,t he next season he plays only 45 games. Then in '93 he puts up 130 pts but the old Gretzky is gone forever.
He better pick it up. I traded Seguin, Elias Lindholm and a 1st rounder for AM in my fantasy hockey league.
So far in his career he's only proved to be a PPG player. Although, judging by the checks he's cashing.you would think different.
This is more speculation than analysis of what's going on with AM. I think that - for the first time in his life - he's really thinking about his game. This is the catalyst for maturaton: to recognize that there are inadequacies in his game, and it's up to him to correct them. His off season indiscretions in AZ were very troubling (both what he did, and how he handled it). I think it shook him up and embarrassed him. Good. He's never really had to think about improving his game. After all, he can score. His first NHL game was spectacular, but it may have delayed his day of self reflection. Thinking while you're playing is almost always going to hinder performance. I think that's AM's problem right now. We sometimes forget how young some of these uber-talented players are. I think in the long run he'll be fine; but it's getting close to urgency for the Leafs this season.
He's still learning the defensive side of the game and playing the whole ice. His point production is flat lining from the day he took the ice for the first time, PPG. He has to start showing more urgency and be more consistent physically, get involved in the play at all ends of the ice, don't take nights off. The salary he earns demands so much more, there has to be that rise to McD levels of 100 point seasons, at least Marner is consistent and we know his game although a little overpaid.
those announcers are such homers. the first goal isn't anything special. it's carom off the boards. crosby is in the same spot when he plays. was pete peeters in on that game? 3 goals were from long slapshots and only 1 was screened. he waved at all 3 with the glove. shocked he wasn't pulled. he was swiss that night. shocked the flyers only lost 7-5. the flyers were wearing those hideous pants. haha.
damn i didn't know that. their comments were on the verge of blowing gretzky. some goals were nice. others were ok. that first goal wasn't a big deal.
but they didn't know he was going to score 50 when he had goals 46, 47, 48 etc. again their commentary is funny.
