Ryan O'Reilly is the first non-visor wearing Conn Smythe winner since Lidstrom in 2002. May very well be the last too.
Brutal - just like any morning. We know we lost the trade - the team that gets the best player almost always wins the trade. But the story is obviously not yet told because the most important piece for BUF in this trade is an unnamed prospect that will become known at the draft. I also doubt BUF swings the Skinner trade if ROR is still on the team - they could have done that but from an overall roster makeup and with cap implications I don't think they would do it. Buffalo is a shit-hole of people that have a chip on their shoulder and an overbearing sense of how important sports are to life. Get the fuck over it, Buffalo! My personal opinion is that ROR strong-armed his way outta town - and frankly I do not blame him. Still, if a player says he wants out does a team not trade him? I think there were lockerroom issues over leadership, and that if they had to choose between ROR or Eichel the correct decision was made to keep Jack.
It's always more complicated than it looks in hindsight. Some Sabre fans were mocking Botterill by mentioning that ROR had almost as many points in the playoffs as Thompson and Sobotka had combined in the regular season. If there was an issue between jack and ROR then botts had no other choice.
I am almost certain that there were not any personal issues between Jack & Ryan. But I think it is very likely that they were like oil & vinegar in terms of team building. Their personalities are so different, and I believe that the team felt they had to make a choice between one or the other. As you noted, there is not choice if that's the equation.
