That is a lot to cut now. I already had trouble cutting to 30 and I'm sure some people planned their rosters to hold as many or more until then. With draft pick trades some teams have more than 5 picks, never mind draft day trades that could change the numbers. Also we had a 6th round draft pick traded away. There has to be another solution. I think there can be a better one. I might have one but need to explain it properly. I'll try to get the gist of it out now though. Basically it will involve keeping it how the rules are now but keeping everything OFF Flea Flicker. After the draft, likely in the forum, we drop down to 32 by the time the HOF game goes on. We can trade via PM and commish approval during that time as well as during the draft but no free agency can happen at that time. After the HOF game Tim will adjust the rosters to match what is correct and he will officially open Free Agency via the waiver wire. We could also cut the draft down as you said but we need at least 6 due to the trade and with FA closed for a while if we do this then maybe we need a couple more rounds. People will want rookies early and key depth FAs in later rounds. I'm sure whoever traded their 6th was expecting to get someone of the sort in a later round. Maybe 8 rounds?
The main thing that I believe we need to do is to keep it as much on the fantasy football site as possible. Having things off site will only add to confusion and headaches with people having to go back and forth to try and keep track of FAs and potential trade partners . Not having free agency open until the start of the season is not an option IMO. Season ending injuries and minor ones in the preseason can affect the entire depth chart of a team and not being able to make moves until the start of the season limits someone's ability to correct other issues as well, such as a change in the depth chart by coaches or the emergence of fantasy relevant player. It will also be harder for some owners to track their own rosters to start the season as I know some will not have as much time to put in as others. I understand the concept, and I understand your point of view on it, but simplicity is always going to be favored by the majority of the league. There is still a possibility that we will switch to NFL.com and it will render a lot of this moot (40 man rosters), but I wanted to get this out there in case we needed to prepare for a change. If there is software out there that is available for us to use with the ability to draft, track and finalize rosters prior to the start of the season I would be willing to set it up and transfer rosters.
In what I proposed FA wouldn't have to wait until the start of the season. And it's only off the site for the draft (a day or two?) and a week after the draft for us to make cuts. Our rosters would stay at 30 until the draft and then a week after it's done we would immediately be back on the site with 32. I don't think that is too complicated.
the draft and how to handle new players should be a challenge. i don't see my team drafting more than 3 rounds
Well my brain isn't working right at the moment. Let me know how it turns out and I'll pass relevant info on to my brother. I don't love the idea of moving sites, but if we have to, then I'll support the move. The draft could be less than 10 rounds, but maybe not less than 6. And I traded for an 8th rounder, but honestly he likely wouldn't make the team anyways.
I can live with anything really but I honestly think it's simpler going into the draft at our current 30 (with the 2 cuts) and then having the draft and after a week of trading/deciding who to cut we go down to our 30+2 and are back on the site like normal. I mean if the draft is going to be off site anyways then why not? We get our freedom from the restraints of programming and all we need to do is have expanded roster offline for a week. There won't even be Free Agency going on during the week to complicate matters either.
No. We would still be able to track progress and make free agent moves to continue to build our roster. Not all of our draft picks will work out and having the ability to move them via trade or free agency throughout the preseason is one of the fundamentals of this league. However, I ultimately would like the ability to have 40 players on the roster after the draft with open free agency and trading prior to the start of the season roster cuts. Because of this, we are probably going to be making the switch to NFL.com. After researching it for the past 2 days I believe this league will transfer there with ease and it will fill out all of the needs as set by the rules.
I meant with the stripping down to 27 proposal. Obviously it would be different if you could get a move to happen. Could NFL.com do it without us being locked into the larger roster?
Even if we strip it down to 27 (26 for a 6 round draft), that is only predraft and the rosters go back to 32 (30 regular, 2 PS) for the season. We would not have to cut the roster down until the end of each season and we would still have the ability to make moves throughout the preseason while tracking rookies and FAs. If I am reading it correctly with NFL.com, all we have to do is make sure that we make the change in roster size prior to the start of the season. I'll know for sure when they open their site up for fantasy again so that I can mess with the settings and test it out.
Thanks for putting all the work in to make this work, Tim. FF'er was/is cool and a lot of fun there, but NFL.com is really great especially if they meet our needs.
I'm saying the end number is still 32. One way have vets cut before the draft, the other has them cut after the draft. Both have the roster at 32 a week after the draft.
The bold part is incorrect. The draft for this league is over a month before the start of the season ( http://live4sportnetwork.com/forumlist/viewtopic.php?pid=318607#p318607 )giving owners the entire preseason to assess their picks and roster. My solution still allows for movement in free agency with a period of time to evaluate draft picks, something that your proposal does not.
You sure? Yours has us cutting vets before the draft and then adding rookies to go into preseason and FA with 30/32. Mine has us cutting no one and then cutting vets (or rookies if wished) a week after the draft to go into preseason and FA with 30/32. Both give us time for FA movement (mine just starts a week later, before preseason games anyways) and both give us the entire preseason to evaluate rookies. If someone cut a drafted rookie earlier to keep a vet that's their choice. One solution forces us to cut vets, the other gives more flexibility with the same end result. I think it's especially helpful for teams only looking to add 2-3 rookies. In the original system we wouldn't be forced to cut extra guys we might have wanted to keep. In your proposal we are stuck getting rid of them and hoping at best we can redraft them. In mine I think we are sticking closer to the spirit of the original offseason rules of the expanded roster.
I hope we can get the move to work. I'd just rather draft then cut like in the original rules than cut then draft just to keep in the site limits.
You would be cutting 8-10 players one week after the draft, prior to the start of preseason giving no opportunity to see the players you drafted perform before being forced to cut them. If we trimmed the rosters back to 27 prior to the draft you would still have 12 starters, 15 back-ups (not counting K/DSPTs as keepers). (example keeper situation) QBs - 3 RBs - 5 WRs - 5 TEs - 2 DLs - 4 LBs - 4 DBs - 4 If we do not make the switch, the cut date would be March 1st to bring rosters down to 27. Immediately following the draft free agency would open and remain open throughout the season. PS players would be listed on the date prior to the start of the season. Remember, the draft is not a rookie only draft. All available players are eligible to be drafted.
I like the original rules as well. We have to put together a reasonable solution though and that means keeping everything (or as much as possible) on the fantasy site. Another thing of note - we would be selecting 120 players total. More than likely the most that will make rosters is 30.
The bolded part is where I think you are looking at it wrong. You are forcing us to cut vets for rookies. If we cut after the draft we have choice. We can still cut vets then and have the opportunity to see the players we drafted perform. We aren't being forced to cut rookies. We have a choice to keep key vets & cut a few rookies or to just cut vets and see all our rookies through. If we decide to keep vets instead of look at a rookie in preseason that's our choice and we live with it if we let a gem go. And yes all available players are eligible to be drafted but why should a vet we may have intended to keep and had no risk losing in the original rules be put back in the draft? Until the rookie portion of the draft is done we may not know which vets should be gone. Plus some people only have a few draft picks, some have many. Are people with few picks going to be forced to drop the same amount of vets? Are people with like 8 picks in the first 5 rounds going to have to drop a bunch of vets to get to 24 before the draft and then possibly miss getting their vet back in the draft? What about draft day trades changing roster limits around?
