THIS is the moment a young yoga enthusiast balances upside down on her balcony - seconds before plunging headfirst 82ft and breaking 110 bones in a horror fall. Alexa Terrazas, 23, often practised complicated yoga poses on her balcony but on Saturday she slipped and fell from her third-floor apartment in San Pedro, Mexico. A friend of the 23-year-old took a snap as she hung precariously from the balcony’s railing, just moments before slipping and falling to the ground below. The university student at the Tecnológico de Monterrey fell at around 1.10pm on Saturday, reportedly breaking 110 bones from the fall. The publication also reported that the student may not be able not walk for three years after doctors were forced to reconstruct her broken legs. Neighbours said they were used to seeing Terrazas perform the dangerous stunt from her balcony's edge. The Nuevo Leon Attorney General's office reportedly opened an investigation to determine if the balcony's rail had any structural damages. However, it has been determined that the fall was the result of an accident. Friends and family members have asked for blood donations to help with the surgery. Neighbours reported that they often saw the young woman performing yoga poses from her balcony. Local news publications have reported that the young woman is the daughter of local entrepreneur Alberto Terrazas Seyfert, the former President of the National Chamber of the transformation industry in Chihuahua. The ordeal landed Ms Terrazas in hospital for 11 hours of surgery with knee and ankle reconstruction, according to local media outlet El Imparcial. She is currently in a critical condition, having suffered fractures to both of her legs and arms as well as her hips and head.
I'm going to say that she was taking her yoga to completely dangerous levels. That's not yoga. That's completely attention-seeking and it's tragic that she died while doing this. Yoga is an introspective art where the last thing you want to do is to draw attention to yourself unless you are engaged in helping someone learn. I read this article last week and I was devastated. She was too young. What drives people to engage in behaviours that are so high-risk?
Ugh. Lyman. Work with me brother. I teach a yoga program that is completely unique and offers my client a blend of Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, Pilates, Ballet and Kick-boxing. I believe that in order for people to learn to love their bodies and to learn coping devices for managing stress, anxiety and depression they have to start by strengthening their bodies first. As we move through challenging poses we learn to focus on our breath, for examples I teach a 4 seconds inhalation and then a 10-30 second exhalation. It's done very slowly to increase the person's ability to focus on their breath and for them to continue moving through the pose (Vinyasa Yoga) or holding the pose (Hatha Yoga). As your body gets stronger your ability to hold a pose with better technique and method begins and then you become more introspective and it's less about whether your extended leg is straight as it is about how well and deeply you can internalize your thoughts and your focus. At that point everything falls into place. It's a lifelong practice similar to Tai Chi. To be honest I don't even like having this woman affiliated with the art of yoga. When you're risking your life hanging off a balcony you're looking for attention. She should make up her own name for what she does because it sure as hell isn't yoga.
That's Yoga? Hell, I've been doing that for years. (And here people thought I was just blowing smoke up their ass.)
