White Sox 8, Tigers 2: Detroit drops third straight after Justin Verlander gets rocked for seven runs. JV is now 6-6 with an ERA well above 4 1/2... and nobody know's why. Thats what Max and the Tigers needed. That was Victor Martinez's 16th HR. He's hitting .330, good enough for 2nd in hitting.
truly bizarre it took him this long to get a CG. [old guy rant] i remember when complete games were normal, not rarities because of pitch accountants and 85 flavors of relief "specialists". [/old guy rant]
I was surprised too when i learned it was his first complete game. I would have lost that bet. He really shut down a decent offense also. Good point on complete games. Here's a chart I pulled up showing the trend over time. CG's used to be very common, nowadays, like you stated, very rare in comparison. Historical MLB complete game trend Year GS CG CG% 1904 2,496 2,186 87.6 1914 3,758 2,067 55.0 1924 2,462 1,198 48.7 1934 2,446 1,061 43.4 1944 2,484 1,123 45.2 1954 2,472 840 34.0 1964 3,252 797 24.5 1974 3,890 1,089 28.0 1984 4,210 632 15.0 1994 3,200 255 8.0 2004 4,854 150 3.1 2013 4,862 124 2.6 I guess pitchers really had rubber arms back in the day.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_06_12_detmlb_chamlb_1&mode=recap_away&c_id=det This is what the Tigers need! Justin Verlander isn't right. His ERA is increasing and his winning percentage is decreasing. Perhaps it is Kate Upton. Perhaps she is Justin's "Jessica Simpson." Someone will just have to take her away from him so he can concentrate on his game.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/det...md=20140613&content_id=79570430&vkey=news_det I am excited to see how this kid turns out.
Sometime in the future, Smyly will go out and have a "bad" game and still get a 'W' to "even things out." Until then, Drew will have to continue to pitch well and wait for the Tigers bats to awaken from their slumber.
I think your right. Gotta do your job and good things will happen. He certainly was the bright spot last night. I'm wondering when Hanrahan will get to join the club, he should be throwing some live practice very shortly. Maybe he can help out the Joe Nathan problem. I heard rehab is going smoothly.

i tuned in just in time to see the 2 run homer. i'm afraid to look at the box score, i half expect to see valverde had pitched for us.
Reed, Coke and Krol were giving up the runs. I'm surprised Nathan didnt get in on the fun, but he had the night off. I failed to mention...V-Mart hit his 17th HR. ...and that Saurez guy hit his 3rd already.
I suspect you may not see much of Romine anymore. Hes atrocious at the plate. Suarez showing some pop. Wonder if the Tigers will listen to Vizquel anymore on who to pick up. Gonzalez sucked(I thought hed do well here but not even close), and Romine. Drew signing with the Sox was bad for the Tigs. He couldve filled that void well and at 10 per Id say thats a solid pickup. This bullpen is so bad. Nathan really has suprised me, I cant figure out watching him what the problem is. How he missed so many bats last year and this year is the opposite. real head scratcher. This is the first real bad patch hes had in his career and I think it may be in his head at this point. We really needed him to just be what hes been forever. Hes cost us a half dozen games atleast. Joba is not the answer there, Huston Street is a UFA after the season, look for the Tigs to inquire about him. Hes on a terrible team and the have - yeah you guessed it, Benoit to fill that role whos done an excellent job over there.
