Miggy will need fans' ballot help with move to first
Cabrera has stiff competition to start All-Star Game, as does Kinsler at second

After years of snubs in All-Star balloting, Miguel Cabrera finally broke through last year when he won the starting nod at third base. If he's going to repeat, he's going to have to do it at first.

It was a positional move meant for the long-term health of his career. It might not be much help for his All-Star standing.

Major League Baseball released its annual All-Star ballot on Friday, complete with Cabrera at first base after the last two seasons at third. He joins a field that includes reigning former teammate Prince Fielder, reigning home-run champion and American League leading vote-getter Chris Davis, three-time MVP Albert Pujols, former MVP and three-time batting champion Joe Mauer, White Sox rookie slugger Jose Abreu, Red Sox hero Mike Napoli and Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira.

Even for the reigning two-time AL MVP, that's a challenging vote to win. He'll get some help from in-stadium balloting at Comerica Park, which begins at the start of the next homestand May 5, and runs through June 18. In the end, however, Cabrera will need a heavy amount of support from the online ballot, which is now available.

Others on the Tigers ballot include second baseman Ian Kinsler, who has made the All-Star team as a reserve every even-numbered year since 2008. His solid start gives him some momentum for early votes amidst a field that includes Boston's Dustin Pedroia and Seattle's Robinson Cano.

Other candidates include rookie Nick Castellanos at third base, Victor Martinez at designated hitter, Alex Avila behind the plate, and an outfield trio of Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson and Rajai Davis.

"Obviously, it would mean a lot to come back to my hometown and play in the All-Star Game," Hunter said. "This is where I grew up. Of course, it's Target Field -- I didn't get to play here. To see everything in place and knowing there's an All-Star Game, of course that's one of my goals, to get here and play here. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be playing and it might be my only opportunity."

The Tigers can already rule out one position. Detroit released Alex Gonzalez on Sunday, but not with enough time to change the ballot, so he's listed at shortstop.

Immediately following the announcement of the AL and NL All-Star rosters, fans can begin voting to select the final player for each league's 34-man roster via the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote Sponsored by Experian. Fans will cast their votes from a list of five players from each league over the balloting period.

My money is still on Miguel. I will stop by and vote for him, and appreciate the link, mlmeng. A lot of good things coming out of the 1st base position, but I dont think there is anyone on that list that is going to top Cabrera, especially since his bay is just getting warmed up. We havnt even seen the best of Miguel yet, imo.

Detroit Tigers recall right-hander Jose Ortega, option Justin Miller to Triple-A Toledo. Ortega is 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 11 1/3 innings for Toledo this season. He has allowed 11 hits, struck out 10 and walked six.

Verlander looks to continue success in Minnesota
Tigers ace takes on comeback-seeking Gibson in rubber match

The offense for the Twins has been a pleasant surprise this season, but they'll face a tough test on Sunday against Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the rubber match between the two clubs at Target Field.

Verlander has been dominant in six career starts in Minnesota, going 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 38 innings.

He's also off to another impressive start this season, as the right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA, including three straight wins over his last three outings.

But Verlander will be facing a Twins team that leads the Majors in runs scored per game, buoyed by the fact they also lead the Majors in walks. The Twins walked eight times in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Tigers.

"I think everybody is just trying to get on base, and there's always conversation about it," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "A lot of our hitters have a few more at-bats in this league and understand it a bit more. It's experience and not panicking in certain situations. They're doing a lot better at that. We're striking out a little too much, but that goes along with it by going deep in counts. But it's an effort, and it's experience."

Right-hander Kyle Gibson will also be looking to bounce back from his worst start of the year, as he was hit hard by the Rays on Tuesday, giving up seven runs on 10 hits over just three innings. Gibson, who will be making his fifth start of the season, saw his ERA rise from 0.93 to 3.63 because of his subpar outing.

"I don't think I did anything too differently, other than the fact that I didn't execute and they did a good job up there of working the at-bats," Gibson said.

To be fair, Coke only did part of what it took to keep his ERA under 20.00. The Twins got tired of running around all those bases so they eventually just got themselves out for the rest. Plus they were way ahead and no way the Tigers would come back.

Analysis: Robbie Ray appears to be top candidate to replace Anibal Sanchez in rotation for Detroit Tigers

DETROIT -- Most teams use about 10 starting pitchers over the course of a full season. The Detroit Tigers used just six in 2013.

They will use at least six as of May 6 of the 2014 season.

Who will replace Anibal Sanchez in the rotation while he spends time on the disabled list with a right middle finger laceration? The top candidate appears to be the young pitching prospect the Tigers obtained in the offseason in the trade that sent Doug Fister to the Washington Nationals.

Left-hander Robbie Ray is 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in four starts for Triple-A Toledo this season.
The Tigers, of course, won't say who will start in place of Sanchez. There's no reason to do so at this point. A couple perfectly placed rainouts and the Tigers wouldn't need to call up anyone. But the Tigers have liked what they have seen out of Ray.

"He has pitched well so far this season for us," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told MLive.com in an email exchange. Dombrowski said he didn't want to elaborate further at this point.

Ray was extremely impressive in his most recent outing. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven in 8 1/3 shutout innings Thursday in a 2-0 victory over Indianapolis.

For the season, Ray has allowed 20 hits, walked five and struck out 16 in 23 1/3 innings pitched for the Mud Hens.
Ray is not on the Tigers' 40-man roster, so they would have to make a corresponding 40-man move if they want him to fill in for Sanchez.

Duane Below, who is not on the 40-man roster, has experience in the big leagues, so he could be another option. Below is 2-0 with a 3.79 ERA in four starts. He also has issued 15 walks in 19 innings pitched for Toledo, so the Tigers likely wouldn't go that route unless Below shows improvement with his control between now and the time the Tigers need him.

The other three starting pitchers for Toledo -- Kyle Lobstein, Drew VerHagen and Derek Hankins -- all have ERAs above 5.00. Of those three, only Lobstein, a left-hander, is on the 40-man roster. The Tigers could go with right-hander Luke Putkonen, who has started in the minors in the past. But he is currently on the 15-day disabled list, so he would be an extreme long shot to make a start for the Tigers in the near future.

The Tigers traded Fister in the offseason for Ray, left-handed reliever Ian Krol and utility man Steve Lombardozzi -- then traded Lombardozzi to the Baltimore Orioles for shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who has since been waived.

The Tigers cut a substantial chunk of payroll by making the trade, but it has received as much criticism from baseball followers and commentators as any trade Dave Dombrowski has made in his career as a general manager. Dombrowski has defended the trade repeatedly and clearly feels that Ray is a prospect worthy of watching.

Tigers fans might get to see him sooner than they had hoped.

I hope that Robbie Ray is ready for a major league start or two. And I like the fact that he is a left hander. Drew Smyly is the only other southpaw in the starting rotation. If Ray pitches well, he would likely be an option if Smyly struggles.

Note: Drew Smyly to be skipped next time through rotation, will start next weekend vs. Kansas City.

Robertson setting sights on final big league ride
Longtime Tigers starter trying to reinvent himself as sidearming reliever

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Nate Robertson was walking through the corridors of Fifth Third Field recently when he spotted a team photo of the 2003 Toledo Mud Hens on the wall. It's part of a history the team has proudly embraced. For Robertson, it's part of his history.

Robertson can run down the line of players and remember the faces as teammates. Most of them, he notes, got callups to the big leagues that year on a Tigers team that lost 119 games. That includes himself, then a starting prospect with a power arm, a good slider and an attitude to attack hitters.

Robertson knows where the paths of those teammates led. He doesn't know where his own is headed.

"It's good to be back," Robertson said with a smile. "It's good to be a part of it."

Eight years, seven organizations and an arm surgery after helping pitch the Tigers to the 2006 World Series, Robertson is a 36-year-old taking one last shot, trying to make it back as a lefty reliever.

He wants to go out on his terms, but he also wants to see what he has left, to see if his transition into a sidearming reliever can play in the Majors. It's a leap of faith for a Tigers organization that has a stockpile of left-handed pitching, and for a pitcher who delivered in his prime with equal parts power and confidence.

"The only reason I made that call to the Tigers and reached out is because I feel like I'm offering something, too," Robertson said. "I love the game of baseball. I love being here. I love being part of this organization. But I also feel like I can help at the big league level.

"What I'm doing here, I'm really working hard toward trying to get back up there. If it happens, to me, it would be more rewarding to do it at this point in my career, as much time as I've had away from the game. To get back up there, man, that would just be something."

It's a process, one with ups and downs already, but one both parties want to see through. Between a Tigers bullpen in flux and Robertson's display in situations, it's a process that might yet lead him back to Detroit.

"I had him on the way up," said Mud Hens manager Larry Parrish. "He's a good influence, good to have around. How far this takes him, no one knows."

The goatee and glasses look familiar. Once Robertson starts into his delivery, though, the similarities end. This isn't the pitcher who struck out 155 batters his first full Major League season 10 years ago, then won 13 games with over 200 innings on the 2006 turnaround Tigers, pitching the openers to the AL Division Series and the AL Championship Series.

Robertson bid farewell to that pitcher a couple years ago, when he took the advice of a Minor League pitching coach and dropped his arm angle to try to get more movement on his pitches. After 1,152 1/3 Major League innings, the fastball had flattened out, and another surgery didn't help.

Robertson shifted his mindset to pitching for contact. He doesn't have to miss the bat, just the sweet spot.

"I'm not going to go out there and strike out a guy per inning. I just want to keep the ball on the ground," he said. "If they're getting hits through the holes, I'm fine with that, because eventually the ground balls are going to go to somebody."

The approach played last year in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, where Robertson went 4-4 with a 3.04 ERA and allowed 45 hits over 50 1/3 innings for Triple-A Round Rock in the Rangers' system. He walked 23, struck out 40 and didn't allow a home run. Left-handed hitters batted just .213 (17-for-80) with eight walks and 23 strikeouts.

Robertson wasn't going to crack the deep Texas bullpen, and he didn't get a camp invite elsewhere. If he was going to try once more to work his way up, he wanted the right situation. That led him back to the Tigers, with whom he signed a Minor League deal in early March.

"How is this going to end? To me, it's going to end good no matter what," Robertson said. "This is exactly what I wanted to happen, and my family wanted to happen. I got a chance to be with what I think is the greatest organization in baseball, come back to a place that feels like home. And I know what's on the table.

"I know what I've gotta do, just keep on getting those boys to roll over and give myself a chance. That's all I can do, but have fun doing it. That's the biggest thing. I want to make sure to have as much fun as I can, because if I can't get back up, it'll probably be it for me."

So far, Robertson is getting seven outs on the ground for every two in the air, and he has yet to allow a home run in 14 2/3 innings. He had eight innings of three-hit shutout ball over a six-game stretch before paying for a pair of leadoff walks in a three-run, two-inning performance Saturday. Even then, two-thirds of the balls put in play were on the ground.

"My wife was giving me a hard time about my walks the other night," he joked. "She said, 'You can't get released before I get up there.'"

It's a process, and Robertson is working at it. His fastball sat at 85-86 mph on Saturday, so he has to be precise, though Parrish thinks that will pick up. There are lessons Robertson has learned about reading and reacting to hitters, and adjusting when his main pitch isn't there.

"I had my slider, and I still have an overhand slider that's good. But if I didn't have that, then I was really in trouble," he said. "Now I've got different weapons. I think I've learned how to adapt to the game, adapt to the hitter, the at-bat, and I've learned how to pitch a lot more."

The reminders of those days aren't hard to find. Not only was Robertson a Tigers starter, he was a Michigander, one of the few players to live here year-round. That ended after Detroit traded him in 2010, but like many Michigan homeowners, he found the real-estate market as tough as a stacked lineup.

Robertson kept the house and rented it out. For the past three years, his tenant was former teammate Don Kelly.

"When I signed, I called and I'm like, 'Donnie, man, I don't know what to tell you,'" Robertson said.

Robertson's family is still back in Kansas, so he is sharing the place and commuting with Mike Hessman, another former Tiger who came back. Hessman signed this past winter for his 18th Minor League season with a chance at the International League career home run record. Robertson is six months older than him.

Hessman is the oldest player on the team, and one of just two Mud Hens pitchers in his 30s. Top prospect Robbie Ray was in Little League when Robertson broke in with the Tigers in 2003.

"I try to keep myself restrained from telling too many stories," Robertson said. "I mean, sometimes guys are like, 'Dude, we don't need another one of those old-time stories. That's enough.'"

Said Parrish: "He goes out of his way to talk to the guys about pitching and throwing strikes, getting ahead. He should be good for some of these other guys."

Robertson doesn't want this trip to be about memories. He wants to make a new memory in Detroit, for himself as much as his 6-year-old son Wyatt. If he can get it all together and get back, he said, it would be the sweetest memory of all.

This year's Draft: Pitching, pitching and more pitching
Mound talent abounds in both high school, college in 2014 Top 100 Draft Prospects list

The 2011 First-Year Player Draft opened with the selection with four pitchers: Gerrit Cole (Pirates), Danny Hultzen (Mariners), Trevor Bauer (D-backs) and Dylan Bundy (Orioles). That had never happened before, and it hasn't happened since.

In 2004, the Padres chose shortstop Matt Bush (who would finish his ill-fated career on the mound) with the No. 1 overall pick before clubs went on a run of seven straight pitchers: Justin Verlander (Tigers), Philip Humber (Mets), Jeff Niemann (Devil Rays), Mark Rogers (Brewers), Jeremy Sowers (Indians), Homer Bailey (Reds) and Wade Townsend (Orioles). Seven pitchers in the first eight selections was unprecedented, and that also hasn't been repeated.

That very well could change soon. Pitchers headline this year's Draft prospects to such an extent that both of those records likely will be matched. The standard of 20 pitchers selected in the first round in 2001 also could be equaled.

"There could be eight or nine pitchers taken in the top 10," a scouting director with an American League team said. "How many can go in the top 15? Twelve? Thirteen? There are so many arms. This is a deeper pool of players than last year, especially with pitchers."

The consensus top four prospects in the Draft, to be held June 5-7, are all pitchers, one from each demographic. There's a college left-hander (North Carolina State's Carlos Rodon) a college right-hander (East Carolina's Jeff Hoffman), a high school lefty (Brady Aiken from Cathedral Catholic in San Diego) and a high school righty (Tyler Kolek from Shepherd, Texas).

Rodon was a strong favorite to go No. 1 overall to the Astros, who hold the first pick for a third year running, but he has shown only glimpses of dominance after an outstanding sophomore season with the Wolfpack and summer with Team USA. Just when it seemed that Hoffman's 16-strikeout performance against East Tennessee State on April 17 might be the start of him making a move to the top, he missed his start this past weekend because of minor arm soreness.

As a result, the thinking at this point is that Houston should and will select one of the high school pitchers (see Jonathan Mayo's related story here). Aiken already had the makings of three plus pitches heading into his senior year, and now he has added more power to his fastball and curveball. Kolek throws consistently harder than anyone in this Draft class and has hit 102 mph out of the stretch.

If the Astros do pick a prep pitcher, they'll be bucking history. No high school right-hander has gone No. 1 overall and only two prep lefties have. David Clyde (Rangers, 1973) bombed after being rushed straight to the Major Leagues, while Brien Taylor (Yankees, 1991) injured his shoulder in an off-field altercation and is one of three No. 1 picks to conclude his career without reaching the big leagues.

Houston scouting director Mike Elias said his club has narrowed its pool of candidates for the top choice to seven, with five of them on a short list. While Elias wouldn't identify the players, it's almost certain that Aiken, Hoffman, Kolek and Rodon are the front-runners. The Astros also are believed to be considering Rancho Bernardo High (San Diego) catcher/outfielder Alex Jackson and Louisiana State right-hander Aaron Nola, and they are thought to be keeping tabs on North Carolina State shortstop Trea Turner and San Francisco outfielder Bradley Zimmer.

While Elias doesn't know who Houston will select on June 5, he's pleased with the Astros' options.

"We're definitely happy with the level of talent among the players we're considering," Elias said. "It's a good group. All of them are extraordinarily talented, and a lot of them should be extremely valuable Major League players. But in terms of having a huge separation between the first and second pick, I don't really feel that's the case. We can go in a number of different directions and be happy with that pick."

Scouts have been much happier with what they've seen from the pitchers than they have from the hitters. Rodon and Hoffman may not have quite lived up to their previous billing, but several college pitchers -- Nola, left-handers Kyle Freeland (Evansville), Brandon Finnegan (Texas Christian) and Sean Newcomb (Hartford) and righty Erick Fedde (Nevada-Las Vegas) -- have taken a step forward and put themselves into position to go in the upper half of the first round. High school righties Grant Holmes (Conway, S.C.,) and Sean Reid-Foley (Sandalwood High, Jacksonville, Fla.) have done the same.

Jackson has maintained his status as the top position prospect, but the other three players whom MLBPipeline.com ranked among the 10 best overall prospects coming into the year have regressed: Turner, Clovis (Calif.) High shortstop Jacob Gatewood and Gainesville (Ga.) High outfielder Michael Gettys. Turner is the fastest player in the Draft, Gatewood's raw power rivals that of anyone and Gettys is arguably the most electric athlete available. Yet there are enough concerns about their hitting ability that Turner likely will fall out of the top 10, Gatewood could drop into the second half of the first round and Gettys could slide all the way out of it.

"There aren't many hitters," a senior scouting executive with a National League team said, "and you can punch some holes in just about any of them."

Few up-the-middle players figure to be taken in the top half of the first round. There's a good chance that Jackson will wind up in right field, so that leaves Turner, Olympia High (Orlando, Fla.) shortstop Nick Gordon and Zimmer.
