The Detroit Tigers activated Pelfrey from the 15-day disabled list on Monday and sent him to the bullpen. With no vacancies in the rotation and Jordan Zimmermann returning soon, there was really no other choice.

Pelfrey, who has made 234 starts and only five relief appearances in his 11-year career, said he understood the move.

"That's fine. I get it. I think everybody in the rotation's throwing well," he said. "I think at this point, after being out for a month, I just want to pitch and help this team out. I'm fine with it."

Pelfrey has been on the shelf since experiencing back tightness during his start on Aug. 1. He's had two rehab starts, the last of which was Saturday in Toledo. The numbers weren't pretty -- five runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings -- but Pelfrey said he felt good.

"Obviously the results probably wouldn't say that, but the ball came out better. It was just over the middle a little too much," he said. (Mlive)
