Tigers hold on to lead this time and defeat the Royal by a final score of 7-6. This is a good thing since the Baltimore Orioles crushed the New York Yankees 8-0. Detroit and Baltimore still have identical 73-61 records as they battle for the 2nd wildcard position.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Joe Mantiply had packed his bags and was ready to head home as soon as the Double-A Erie Seawolves completed their season on Monday.

Instead, the left-handed reliever got a surprise promotion to the big leagues and the Detroit Tigers.

"I wasn't prepared at all," said Mantiply, shortly after he arrived in the visitors clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium. "We were on the road at Binghamton. I didn't have any of my stuff. My car was in Erie, packed up. It was a shock."

Mantiply wasn't on the 40-man roster and he wasn't in Triple-A Toledo, so most didn't even consider him among the many possibilities for a September call-up.

But Mantiply has pitched well in Erie, especially in the last month. He can also serve as a middle innings left-handed reliever, a specialized niche that teams can fill when rosters expand in September.

Mantiply, 25, has steadily climbed up the organizational ladder since being drafted by the Tigers out of Virginia Tech in the 27th round in 2013. But his progress seemed to stall at Erie. He's had only short stints at Toledo in 2015 and 2016, including one in July.

He was 3-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 49 appearances with the Sea Wolves this year. In 51 innings, he struck out 62 and walked 11.

Since returning to Erie from Toledo on July 29, he's been dominant. In 12 appearances in August, Mantiply pitched 13 scoreless innings, allowing only five hits. He walked one and struck out 21.

"I went down from Toledo back to Erie and just kind of hit my stride. I've just been feeling really in sync on the mound," he said. "My confidence started to grow."

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Mantiply would likely be used to face a left-handed batter or two in the middle innings.

The Tigers are making it tough on their fans by getting out to a (should be) comfortable lead, only to blow it and fall behind, and then retake the lead. *WALL*
