Tigers move Ian Kinsler out of lead-off spot in bid to end slump

DETROIT -- Ian Kinsler is moving out of the lead-off spot in a bid to "change his luck," Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Monday.

Kinsler will hit second, switching spots with center fielder Cameron Maybin, who will now bat first.

"He's been barreling the ball up, getting under it a little sometimes, sometimes hitting it right at people," Ausmus said. "So we'll see if it helps. There's no mathematical formula behind it."

Kinsler is 4-for-50 (.080) in his last 13 games. He does have two home runs and a double among his four hits and his batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is a mere .053, suggesting bad luck is at least partially to blame for his slump.

Maybin is 8-for-22 (.364) in six games since being activated from the disabled list. He missed 17 days with a sprained thumb.

"It's just about trying to give Kins a breather," Maybin said of the move. "I mean, the guy's been grinding, and Brad thought it would be a good idea to hit me first. I'm down with it, whatever he wants to do."

In 2016, Kinsler has exclusively batted in the lead-off spot, although he hit second regularly in 2015. (Mlive)

Indians win again over the Twins by a final score of 8-3 and sweep Minnesota.

Tigers not losing ground on the Indians but not gaining ground either. Time is growing short.

As far as post season hopes, the Tigers are currently 0.5 game behind the Orioles for the 2nd playoff spot.

The Detroit Tigers organization has suspended minor-league pitcher Warwick Saupold for five games after reviewing his involvement in a bar fight that resulted in his arrest.

"Upon reviewing the details and accounts of an incident involving Warwick Saupold that took place last weekend in Toledo, the ballclub has issued Saupold a five-game suspension," the Tigers said in a statement Thursday. "The Detroit Tigers organization does not condone his actions and hold all personnel to a higher standard. Moving forward, the Tigers will have no further comment on this matter."

Saupold is pitching with the Tigers' AAA affiliate in Toledo. He was arrested early Sunday morning on a simple assault charge. Officers also arrested two Pittsburgh Pirates minor-leaguers and a fourth man after a "large disturbance" at the Bronze Boar bar, according to police reports.

Tigers up 4-0 on the Royals in the bottom of the 3rd inning. This is a good thing since Baltimore is handing it to the Yankees 8-0 in the middle of the 6th inning.

Tigers eventually blow the lead by giving up 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Miggy just hit a 2-run single to put the Tigers back out in front.
