MLB draft: Tigers load up on pitchers with first five picks

The Detroit Tigers selected pitchers with their first five picks in the MLB draft.

After drafting 6-foot-6 right-hander Matt Manning from Sheldon High in Sacramento, Calif., with the ninth overall pick Thursday, the Tigers selected Louisville senior right-hander Kyle Funkhouser in the fourth round Friday.

The Tigers didn?t have picks in the second or third rounds after signing right-hander Jordan Zimmermann and outfielder Justin Upton as free agents in the off-season.

The Tigers drafted two junior right-handers with their next two picks: Mark Ecker (6-1, 200) of Texas A&M in the fifth round and Bryan Garcia (6-1, 205) of Miami (Fla.) in Round 6. Garcia is a closer.

The Tigers drafted left-hander Austin Sodders (6-4, 210) of California-Riverside in the seventh round.

They selected their first position player in the eighth round, Mississippi State junior centerfielder Jacob Robson. Virginia junior shortstop Daniel Pinero went 265th overall in the ninth round. It was the second time the Tigers have drafted him. They took him in the 36th round in 2015.

With their final pick Friday, the Tigers drafted senior outfielder/first baseman Sam Machonis of Florida Southern College in the 10th round. (FREEP)
