I like the move. Maybin was tough to give up in 2008 (although the Tigers got Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle "coming apart at the seams" Willis in the trade).
got a couple things here. first thing is Im getting really confused as to what the direction is here with this team. the Tigers have said their in the 'win now mode' then I hear Avila say and Im paraphrasing, were not gonna free wheel it like we have in the past on the payroll. now the offseason has just started and plenty of good players are still on the board but outside of them bagging one of the ace studs out there like Price or Grienke how is this team going for the win all now? Avila is either trying to impress Illitch my making a bunch of moves on the cheap and hope for the best or hes saving his pennies for one of the big guns out there - which is very possible. with Maybin and KRod in the fold youve basically said later days Rajai Davis and no dice on Yoenis making a return, this will work IF you get another top line starter and add atleast two more bullie arms. Im having a hard time believeing that will happen. anyhow I digress we got Maybin back, how stupid do the Marlins look. I like the move like I said if its to throw the bank at a big time starter because Maybin is relatively cheap but theres a reason for that. Ive kept an eye on this kid as soon as he was in the Tigers system, he was highly touted by the experts to the point where some called him the next Dave Justice. another scout said this is the best 5 tool player in the last 20 years. lets pump the brakes here. hes I think 28 now, still has the same holes he had in his swing when he was with the Tigers and the power/avg/speed part has been average at best. hes always been a tall kid and I thought when he filled out hed stop looking so uncoordinated out there but that hasnt happened. hes gangly and takes strange routes to the ball in the outfield. now Im not gonna beat this guy up too bad, he does bring some good qualities. he is fast and can cover a ton of ground in the outfield. he can jump and has solid arm strength. he also has pop in his bat and can steal you some bags. At 7 per you could do worse, I guess I always wanted to think all the hype was warranted and I set my expectations accordingly. its long been said players in MLB peak at 27 and Im hoping this isnt all this guy has - time will tell bottom line here Avila, is that you better make it happen on the pitching front
First off, im glad to see you and happy you dropped by... hope the transitions your working on are going well, Secondly, very well said piece you just did and I have a question. I dont expect a move towards Price or Grienke, but after the real top guns, who would you like to see signed and who do you think is on the radar. If the Tigers dont go after a top gun, is this staff even competitive for the AL Central? Curious what your thoughts may be...
I also dont expect a move in that direction Will, Id be shocked if they even inquire about Grienke let me sleep on this Will, all is going well at the new house just slow. maybe I need to stop providing beers to all my buds helping......naaah f*ck that
As far as SP go, I'd more than welcome back Fister and/or be happy about signing Zimmerman or Kazmir.
its possible but a lot of things would have to fall in place namely no injuries. seems like forever since Sanchez made it through a full season and JV has had his issues, even Shane Greene went down. the bullpen would also have to be lights out especially with the current roster. I dont see the likelihood of this happening greater than the chances the Lions make the playoffs this year. Id be borderline shocked if they bagged either one to be honest. I kind of said earlier what I think would be my goals as far as who to get. Stl is right, Fister(who also has his share of injuries) or Kazmir would be nice fits. If Im making the call Im going hard for Samardzija, this team more than anything needs a horse like him. if you can squeeze 200 or close to it out of JV and get 30-32 starts and 220+ out of Jeff your gonna be doing pretty damn good IMO. Sanchez is an excellent 3rd and Greene who I really like and Norris should round out the rotation. the bullpen is still the key ingredient. without breaking every player down and my reasoning(and boring you guys to death) Ill make my wishlist in the order Id go be going after the starters and relievers Starters - 1. Jeff Samardzija 2.Mike Leake 3. Doug Fister 4. Wei-Yen Chen 5. Scot Kazmir 6. Yovani Gallardo 7. Hisashi Iwakuma 8. John Lackey 9. Ian Kennedy 10. Brandon Morrow or Mat Latos Bullpen - 1. Ryan Madsen 2. Sean Marshall 3. Tyler Clippard 4. Eric O'Flaherty 5. Chad Qualls 6. Antonio Bastardo 7. Casey Janssen 8. Carlos Marmol 9. Chris Young 10. Phil Coke and Tom Gorzellany.....just kidding
glad we signed an actual closer. u know your team has problems when u think of when mike henneman was closing as the good old days.
Not to draw the conversation off-topic, but I'm looking to get a new Tigers jersey. The only other one I have happens to be a white Granderson. I'm leaning towards JD, but I want to see that contract extention in the worst of ways. Any thoughts?
JD is a great choice. My last one was a Pudge Rodriguez. As far as the contract... I cant see him going anywhere soon.
That's what I am thinking. The Tigers still have 2 more years of control, but I'd be a lot better off knowing he got a 5-7 year deal.
If Avila is smart he wont tender Feliz. the guys had problems with his arm and thats why Texas let him walk, he did nothing to impress in his stint here and thats too much money(probably 5 mill) for a guy that hasnt shown the stuff he had early in his career. hes lost speed on his FB and its affects the only other two pitches he throws. his slider is nothing to write home about, ditto for his change and when almost 75% of your pitches are fastballs Id say thats a problem. when he was hitting 97 and 98 regularily he could get away with average secondary pitches. If you can get KRod for 6 I gotta think theres better options out there for 5 and a guy that had a whopping 7.62 ERA last year - who gives up a TD a game? later days Feliz
Just the thought of signing Feliz makes my head spin. I wish somebody new what the hell they were doing when it comes to the pitching staff. Just imagine the Tigers with a bullpen... they would be killers for a loooong time. I agree, there must be someone better to be had.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/14249237/jordan-zimmermann-detroit-tigers-reach-free-agent-deal Will you are going to be needed to stay on top of all these changes or most of us will be lost come April '16.
I'll do my best with pleasure. Thanks for breaking that news. So far Avila has pulled the trigger on Maybin, K-Rod and Zimmermann.
So, more news. Tigers have been busy, early and often... I like it. Tigers also have announced that they probably wont be pursuing another outfielder with the signing of Maybin.
