Norris shines in debut with Tigers, who beat Orioles 6-1 BALTIMORE (AP) Daniel Norris took a three-hitter into the eighth inning in his Detroit debut, J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer and the Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Sunday to earn a split of the four-game series. Norris (2-1) was obtained by the Tigers on Thursday in the deal that sent former Cy Young Award winner David Price to Toronto. Making his seventh career start, the 22-year-old Norris provided a glimpse of his potential against a contender that won seven of its previous eight games. Norris allowed one run, four hits and a walk in 7 1-3 innings - the longest outing of his career. The left-hander hadn't started in the majors since April 30, and was 3-10 with a 4.27 ERA for Triple-A Buffalo this season. On this day, however, Norris was dominant. Assuming Price's spot in the rotation, the rookie proved to be a suitable replacement for the left-handed ace. The only glaring flaw in his performance came in the fourth inning, when Chris Davis homered on a 2-1 pitch. That was pretty much the extent of the Baltimore offense. After scoring 20 runs in the first three games of the series, the Orioles went quietly against a team that apparently turned the page to next year by dealing Price, closer Joakim Soria and slugger Yeonis Cespedes before Friday's non-waiver trade deadline.
good deal but ahem, associated press. you've been doing this for years - centuries even - what's your excuse? here, lemme take care of it. you're welcome.
I apologize... I was in a hurry so a copy/pasted an AP article. Fired my proofreader tho. I AM DOMINATE TOO 11!1!!11!!

[h]Detroit Tigers release Dave Dombrowski from contract, name Al Avila new general manager[/h] DETROIT -- Dave Dombrowski is no longer employed by the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers announced in a press release today that Al Avila has been promoted to the role of executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager. Dombrowski has been released from his contract. "I would like to thank Dave Dombrowski for his 14 years of service," owner Mike Ilitch said in the release. "Together we've enjoyed some success, but we're still in aggressive pursuit of our ultimate goal: to bring a World Series title to Detroit and Michigan. I've decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other career opportunities. I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership." Avila has been part of the Tigers organization since 2002. "I'm very excited for this opportunity and honored and grateful to Mr. Ilitch for having the faith and trust in me to run the ballclub in our continuing pursuit of a World Series championship," Avila said in the release. "After 24 years in professional baseball and 14 with the Detroit Tigers, I believe I'm uniquely qualified to be successful in this role in leading this organization. We're confident we can make a strong push to win this year, and that we have the foundation in place to win next year and for years to come." Dombrowski joined the Tigers prior to the 2002 season. The Tigers won just 98 games combined over the next two seasons before getting headed in the right direction. The Tigers went to the playoffs five times (2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) during his tenure, including a trip to the World Series in 2006, just three years after the Tigers went 43-119. The Tigers also played in Game 163, a tiebreaker to decide who advanced to the playoffs, in 2009 against the Minnesota Twins. Dombrowski got his first baseball job when he was hired by the Chicago White Sox in 1978 and was their assistant general manager from 1982 to 1986. He later was the general manager for both the Montreal Expos and the Florida Marlins before joining the Tigers. The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 with Dombrowski in charge. Avila was assistant general manager and then interim general manager for the Marlins in 2001 before joining the Pittsburgh Pirates as a special assistant to the general manager in 2002. But he left the Pirates to join the Tigers just three months later. "Al Avila is a true baseball man," Ilitch said in the release. "He's been involved in every facet of the game as a college head coach, scout and executive. His track record in identifying and developing talent is extremely impressive. I'm confident that Al will bring his own approach and his own style to the general manager position. He's worked extremely hard over the course of his career to afford himself this opportunity with the Detroit Tigers." Avila will report directly to Ilitch, according to the release. Executive Vice President of Business Operations Duane McLean will continue to oversee the business side of the franchise and will also report directly to Ilitch.
k Ill try and break these guys down we got at the deadline. Like I said Im not overly familiar with Cessa but heres what Ive seen and my thoughts on them Daniel Norris, obviously the gem of the group. he was top 20 before the season started by most sites and I wouldve had him in the 10-12 range. hes got a lot to offer. he has a Fb that tops out in the 96 range although he usually stays around the 93-94 range. he has a wicked curveball that can make batters look foolish. he has the usual bag of tricks, slider and changeup to go along with it. hes a very heady player and not intimidated by anything which is huge for a pitcher especially at a young age. nothing really deceptive about his delivery and he walks way to many batters. the key to him succeeding will be to get better command of his slider. he seems a little loose at times and as much as Im eager to see what he can do at this level, the command is something that should get ironed out before your in the bigs. hes got a real bright future and had it not been for the Jays panicking when the Yanks got in on Price I think we dont see Norris in that trade. he reminds me of a young CJ Wilson. this guy will be a fan favorite before long and will be great in the clubhouse Matt Boyd, the lefty from Oregon State. he has played a high level worked as mostly a reliever in college and pitched in the College World Series. hes got a solid makeup and a deceptive delivery that some have said replicates Sandy Koufax. his Fb hits the 93-95 range which is solid for a lefty. his bread and butter like I would say is his curveball. he throws the same stuff as Norris with a slider that hes still getting command of and a changeup that gets flat sometimes and he tends to hang them too. Im a big stat guy and his numbers suggest power lefty that will miss plenty of bats. his WHIP has been pretty darn good in the minors and that should only get better with time. Im a big fan of power pitchers and this guy I really like. great pickup Jairo Labourt, another big lefty with some power. hes got some gas easily hitting 95 repeatedly and has big potatoes if you know what I mean. he'll come right at you and doesnt care who you are. hes still yet to fully fill out and looks like hes about 12 years old. he throws at about a 3/4 angle and works quickly - another thing I like. hes all business and although he seems to be an afterthought with all the guys we got I think hes got some real upside. the biggest problem with him is command, he doesnt seem to have a good feel for the offspeed pitches especially his changeup and slider wich generate very little spin. although hes not as big he reminds me of Franklyn German. If this kid gets his control better the sky is the limit Mike Fullmer, kinda gets lost with all the golden arms the Mets have had in their system. hes decent. big guy with an average FB, also throws the curve, slider and change. although he appears like a guy that could be a horse the way hes built hes actually more of a ground ball pitcher i think. maybe more of a bullie guy. his fastball has little to no movement and unless he starts getting more on his slider to offset the fastball hes gonna have trouble. he has a long predictable delivery and really no deception. ehh, thought we could get more than a guy that most sites had barely inside the top 20 for Cespedes Jacoby Jones, this was where DBRow bombed to me. I will say this guy is in excellent shape and has a lot of physical tools. hes pretty fast, good power and for his size has great movement in the field defensively. problem here is between the ears. I dont think he takes to authority good and can be a disruption like he was at LSU. theres an arrogance about him I dont care for, maybe its just that hes young and he'll grow up - time will tell. remember Charlie Ward was a once in a lifetime athlete and we seen how that turned out Julius Cessa, I wont comment on a guy that I really dont know anything about. Im not gonna enlighten you at all here anymore than you could yourself looking up numbers
worst move Illitch has made since letting Bowman go, he will regret this I cant stress it enough. Dombrowski is the best exec in the league IMO. unbelievable
I appreciate what you wrote on the prospects, Cutter and i will have lots of comments and questions in regard to that post. Right now im trying to digest what the Tigers just did and what they plan to do. One thing for sure... if anyones head should of rolled, imo, it would have been Ausmus first.
i understand you're upset, cutter - so maybe now isn't the best time to say that that 70's show is VERY high on the list of shows i think suck hard. O
