maybe Price wants out, thats the only thing I can think of. It never hurts to put feelers out I guess but there are other people Id be throwing out there if hes looking trade
u are one of many "some people" and i'm not saying it isn't a valid concern - i'm simply offering one possible explanation.
I think your deduction is very valid, Lulz. In the back-ground scheme of things they may have wanted to test the waters and see what kind of return they could possibly recoop if they are to offer a deal to Max he wont refuse. If the Tigers offer Max somewhere in the ballpark of $175+M, they might have to sacrifice an arm to do so. I just wouldnt want to be the guy to do that... it sounds risky, but probably necessary. Hate to see it go down like that. I really like the starting 5, but it's a mean business.
Porcello is now a Red Sox and Cespedes is a Tiger. I like it, shrewd move. I'll expand on this later when I have time
Former Red and Oriole Alfredo Simon is now a Tiger also. He's a guy DBrow has wanted for awhile now. He wheeling n dealing now
I miss a lot when i venture around town and dont listen to the radio news. I hope Cespedes works out and I welcome him to Detroit. Got more pop in the lineup now. I like Simon, he can bring it. When he's on he's really good. Normally last year he was a steady, eddie. I also have a gut feeling DD isnt done yet...
Good point. I didnt catch that right away as it went right over my head, then it struck me... where is Max's name. I think their planning on life without him, but, who knows?
Top 3 is scarey good. I still think Simon would be bettr as a closer. After watching him with the O's for a number of years. I think he'll get rocked again back in the AL. Greene could be a good one. But......still no bullpen help. So unless Price, Verlander, and Sanchez can pitch complete game wins every outing, you might have win a lot of 10-9 games.
Simon with the Reds last year was streaky. He seemed to go on burst's of brilliance followed by a couple start's of not getting anyone out. At least with the Tigers he should see some decent run support. If he has to go to the pen for whatever reason, he sure has experience there, that's for sure. I hope your right about Greene, going to need him in a big way. ============================================================================= I forgot to mention earlier. Yoenis Cespedes has a great arm for that spacious outfield, some have wondered if he's the best arm out there on the Tigers since Al Kaline.
Not his arm you should be worrying aabout. He needs to have tha great arm because of all the balls he misplays. Greene is a good #5. Pitched against the O's a cople of times last year and was impressive. He can go about 6 innings. Then turn it over to the BP. Oh wait!!!!!!! Simon with the Reds last year & with the Orioles was streaky. He seemed to go on burst's of brilliance followed by a couple start's of not getting anyone out. At least with the Tigers he should see some decent run support.
the comment implied it to me - so i did some searching. sure enough, i see reports that the tigers are no longer "actively pursuing" max.
well I have a few thoughts on the flurry of activity. First thing is Im still not sold that Maz wont be back but for the sake of argument we'll say hes gone. Was this a move to make us better or fix one hole to create another. We had arguably the worst defensive outfield in the game and made a massive improvement by getting Cespedes. He has a cannon for an arm and gives us the the best defensive leftfielder since......hell I cant even think of one. Hes gold glove calibre and having a LF with an arm like that really cahnges the game. Runners will hesitate when in scoring position and managers wont give the go sign. It will singlehandedly win us some games I promise you. Now as far as his positional play, I honestly havent watched him on a day to day basis to form an opinion. I will say that in the games Ive seen him in hes fine, hes quick enough to make the adjustments also. Hes a maybe slightly lesser version of Jim Edmonds. Edmonds routinely wasnt in position like he should be but his arm and speed nullified that repeatedly. I also on a much lesser scale think Cespedes has some Sheffield in him. Its rare to see a guy get up to bat and swing like he wants to rip the strings off the ball. Hes a very aggressive hitter and although hes gonna have his share of K's, I think that mentality for a hitter is good. also DBRow was very high on Yoenis when he defected and the only reason Prince ever came here was because we didnt lock Cespedes up. His eye for talent is second to none. The one caveat with Cespedes is hes on his 3rd team in 6 months. HEard he wasnt the easiest to get along with in Boston - of course rumors but Im sure when he gets here VMart will straighten him out. so weve fixed a glaring hole in the OF and provided more punch in the lineup. Yoenis is up for a contract and with the best protection hes ever had look for a career year and he may even be slotted 6th to provide the young JD Martinez protection Now onto Porcello. I was never a big fan, partly because I dont like pillow tossers. hes a groundball pitcher with no gas and seems to tail off every year in the second half. He is still young and hasnt hit his peak age of 27. but hes got 6 years on that arm and Ive seen very minimal overall improvement. at 12 per from arbitration to a guy thats probably gonna get 15-16, I say later days. Hes at best a #3 on a crap team. He may prove me wrong but Ive watched him since day 1 and Ive seen enough welcome to Detroit Alfredo Simon. hes a big kid and at 33 still should have a couple decent years(although you always question his real age seeing as his REAL name is Carlos Cabrera). he throws a fastball, slider, cutter and a changeup. He can hit 97 on the gun but isnt really a power pitcher to me. Hes got decent stuff but he hasnt seem to have found his niche yet. I think hed be better suited for the bullie but hes been starting a lot lately and I think thats what the plan is for him. He is a horse though so I can see why starting may work for him, although hes is streaky he never tires - I mean never. curious to see this guys role and how he does. hes a wild card but we gave up a rosin bag and some chew for him so its a win win for the Tigers In the end Dombrowski did well IMO. we needed to address the hitting/power on this team and Cespedes although he hasnt played much in the postseason has been nails. Hes also never hit more than I think 25 or 26 but as I said earlier look for that to change this year. Im thinking .278/29/115, thats not too shabby for a guy thats likely to be the 5th or 6th hitter
Cespedes is an underrated OF but in no way a GG caliber one. He misplays a lot balls, but then makes up for it with his arm and accuracy. He committed 6 errors last year; 8 the year before that. The one thing he has going for him, besides his arm, is his range, so he can get to a lot of balls that other OF's might not be able to. Alfredo/Carlos Simon. The biggest difference between him and Edwin Jackson is that Simon is more consistently mediocre. With Jackson you never know what you're going to get from game to game. Simon is a .500 pitcher. He pitched better in the NL without the DH, but still mediocre. In the AL he will pitch to probaly around a 4.50 ERA/1.35-1.40 WHIP. He usually starts off pretty hot, but then fades as the season goes on. How do I know this? I was seduced one too many times when he was with the Orioles. As Will pointed out, he is very streaky. He will pitch 1-2 games in a row where you think he is the second coming of Roger Clemons (pre-roids), then pitch 4-5 games where he pitches just good enough to keep the game close, then 2 games where you look at his stats and can't believe that a pitcher can throw 25 pitches and still has gotten anyone out. I wish you guys all the luck in the world. O's/Tigers series are have become very fun to watch lately with both teams doing well. It should be fun again this year.
Alex Gordon made 2 errors last year(and I was at the game where he shouldve got another coincidentally) and Cespedes had 5. You must be seeing something Im not, Yoenis has a better arm and he may not be as fast but I dont see why the Gold Glove is out of the question. You hit a ball to the warning track with a guy on 2nd Ill take Cespedes all day long. He also made 2 of his 5 errors in a park (Fenway)that wind is a factor much like it may be in Detroit. but the way the wind blows off the Detroit river its more of a detriment to the RF and he had to make an adjustment to that when he went to Boston. Ill reserve my opinion of his defensive abilities until I watch him over a full year but he has just as much ability as the Gold Glove winner the last 3 years
