DETROIT - There?s a first time for everything.

For three Red Wings players, another first is in the not so distant future as they begin preparing for their Stanley Cup playoff debuts.

?Obviously it?s huge,? said Riley Sheahan, who joins teammates Luke Glendening and Tomas Jurco as the only players on Detroit?s roster who have not appeared in the NHL?s postseason. ?It?s going to be a lot of fun for us and I think last year being in the AHL Calder Cup run, that was a lot of fun but this is just on another level. We?re happy where we are going in and it?s a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of fun so we?re going to enjoy it.?

Although the three youngsters have yet to play in their first NHL playoff game, that doesn?t mean they don?t have valuable postseason experience under their belts. Glendening, Jurco and Sheahan were all part of the Grand Rapids Griffins Calder Cup championship in 2013, and know that experience will only help them when the Red Wings begin their hunt for the Stanley Cup next week.

?Just being in that playoff atmosphere, being in tight situations in front of crowds that are loud and arenas that are packed, it definitely helped a lot,? Sheahan said. ?Those pressure situations you get in, you've got to keep level headed and I think we did a good job of that last year, so hopefully it will work out for us again this year.?

There?s no reason why it shouldn?t. Since the Olympic break, the Griffins players have accounted for 31 of the club?s 67 goals, helping Detroit earn 20 points in its last 15 games to extend its playoff streak to 23 years.

As the Wings battled an abundance of injuries this season, many things may have been uncertain, but one wasn?t: the young players did not want to be part of the reason the club didn?t make the playoffs, and they helped make sure that was not the case.

?I mean you know obviously this team has been decimated by injuries and it was tough knowing that we were the young guys coming in and I personally didn?t want to be one of the reasons why we didn?t make the playoffs so that is a little bit of a weight off our shoulders for sure,? Glendening said.

i really don't like this matchup. there weren't many 1st rnd match ups that i really didn't want, this is on the top of the list.

For the first time since leaving the 2014 Winter Olympics for back surgery, Henrik Zetterberg will skate with the Detroit Red Wings. Zetterberg will join the team on the ice for practice Tuesday for a light skate and may have a chance to return for the Red Wings' first-round series with the Boston Bruins.

Zetterberg has been ruled out for this weekend's games, but getting him back on the ice is a step in the right direction.

?I don't know if he'll be in a full practice, but he'll be on the ice at the start of it, be on for a little bit then get off,? general manager Ken Holland said. ?Then we'll see how he is Wednesday.?

Holland said Zetterberg will need time, but did not rule out the captain's ability to return for the first round.

From the Detroit Free Press' Helene St. James:

"He'll need at least a week of skating before we see how he feels," Holland said. "The hope is he can ramp it up every day. Is there a chance he can play in the first round? Yeah. But there's also a chance he won't play. The second round is a more likely scenario, but nothing is certain. First, he has to dip his toe in the water."
Getting Zetterberg for any portion of the opening round would be a huge boost against a Bruins team that looks heads above the rest of the Eastern Conference. Should the Red Wings find a way past the Presidents' Trophy winners, Zetterberg obviously would make a huge difference in the stretch run if he's healthy enough to contribute.

According to Holland, the Red Wings hope Zetterberg will be able to resume taking contact in practice next week.

It?s been almost a month since Jonathan Ericsson underwent surgery on his broken finger ? a lengthy time to be shelved, but apparently not enough for the injury to fully heal.

Ericsson is unlikely to be available for Detroit?s opening-round playoff series against Boston, GM Ken Holland told the Macomb Daily. The injury, which the club originally thought would only sideline Ericsson for 10-14 days, ended up requiring a 4-6 week timetable, forcing the Swedish blueliner to miss the last 14 games of the regular season.

This has been a crazy year for Ericsson overall. He?s been pretty good when healthy ? scoring 11 points in 48 games while averaging over 21 minutes a night ? and signed a big six-year, $25.5 million extension with Detroit in November. But he?s had absolutely miserable luck health-wise, missing time with rib and shoulder injuries prior to the broken finger.

Not having him available for the opening playoff round will be tough on Detroit, as Ericsson?s one of the club?s most veteran players ? he has 64 games of playoff experience on his resume, and played in the 2009 Stanley Cup Final loss to Pittsburgh.

DETROIT ? Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg skated with the team today for the first time since before the Olympic break.

Zetterberg practiced for about 30 minutes with teammates.

?It was fun to be out there today; I didn?t do that much but hopefully I can do more tomorrow,? Zetterberg said. ?It felt good.?
