Sign and trade is a whole different topic that we might see this year. I don't think Tallon has the ability to pull it off anyway. Weiss is a UFA.
I was saying the Wings are going to be fine against the cap unless they want to get in the flop-n-twitch bidding wars I think we'll see in the next 3 offseasons. Most of the core is on a cost-effective cap hit. Kronwall and Zetterberg being on very reasonable hits. Most of the depth will be from internal signings, usually RFA types or ELC types. Very cheap. A regular buyout isn't the end of the world either if one of them implodes. I just don't see a big contract really boxing Detroit in for the next 3 years. I don't think there are going to be that many big targets out there.
I read it wrong now that changes everything, your right hes UFA this year. Ive never referenced Capgeek until a couple weeks ago. the overlapping season/years I guess threw me off. this changes my attitude on getting him. I dont know that I want him now, I apologize my mistake
OK, now I know what you're saying. Looking at the numbers I see the Wings have a lot of flexibility the summer of 2014 to do what they need to do and if the cap goes up as you expect it will they'll be ok later on. BUT,, My concern is the financial position the Wings are in at the present time and not so much for the 2014 season. If Capgeek is correct, here's what I see. The Wings have 10.6 million dollars available and technically 20 roster spots filled which on the surface looks pretty good. The problem is there are 5 players they want/need to sign with that 10 million dollars in available money and there is no way they can sign all 5 unless they make some trades to shed some salary. How does Kenny sign a number 2 center, Nyquist, Brunner, Andersson and Brenden Smith for 10 million dollars ??? Sure if they signed all 4 forwards they can send Tatar to the minors since he's on a 2 way deal which technically means the Wings have 11.4 million or so to work with. But they'll need to sign an 8th dman which takes them right back to around the 10.5 million I originally mentioned. If the number 2 center's cap hit is in the 6 million dollar neighborhood that's going to leave around 4 million dollars for Brunner, Nyquist, Andersson and Brenden Smith. In my estimation at the end of the day Kenny could very easily need closer to 10 million to sign those 4 players. and be around 6 million dollars short. For the summer it doesn't matter, he can be I believe 10 percent over the cap until the first day of the season. But if that's the case where does the 6 million dollar cut come from ???
Ya never know !!! I think yesterday was the first time I saw a trade made where a team ate one of the traded player's cap number to make the deal. Toronto ate Frattin's 465 grand, he remains on their team cap hit for 2013/2014. Not that 465 grand is going to make or break the Leafs but it's still pretty cool to see something that never used to happen *BRAVO*
I think out of those four only Nyquist and Smith should get more than 2 per. cannot let Smith or Dekeyser walk at any point, I think tose two may be a our defense of the future and they both bring a lot to the table - and now have some good playoff experience under their belts
Cutting payroll won't be hard for Holland. Samuelsson is 3 million, Bertuzzi is 2, Howard is a workhorse so the monster could be downgraded to a million dollar goalie, Quincey still has value (even if they eat some salary), Eaves is easy to move, Helm may be on LTIR, Tootoo can be waived (saves 900K in AHL)/dumped/boughtout, and then there are more creative options I dare not explore. Detroit is very flexible against the cap, probably the most flexible of the teams that spend to the cap. Expiring and short contracts for depth and role players are easy to move out of the way, especially with 2 buyouts available. On another note, don't be surprised to see Kenny "sell" one of his buyouts to pick up another asset or pick that he can flip.
FYI... For those of you in the Detroit viewing area that expected to see the Cup Finals game on channel 4 tonight, channel 4 will air the annual Detroit fireworks show, wich moves the game to channel 38. It is also on CBC of course. This has been a public service announcement...
Well, all I can say is I hope you're right and Detroit does have the flexibility you say they have. But here's my guess, what I think happens and yet one more thing I hope I'm wrong about. I don't think Kenny signs a really good number 2 center. If he's really really lucky and nobody out there overpays for Fil maybe just maybe Holland holds onto him. Holding onto his own players is one thing but overpaying for an UFA is something he hasn't really done a whole lot of lately. Supposedly went after Parise and Suter but if those rumors are true the same people were saying Kenny was lowballing for a long time before they signed with the Wild. Actually he more I think about this I would almost bet the equity in my house that Weiss never wears a Wings sweater.... or at least never wears one at 6.5 or 7 million per season. He'll play the kids next year.... which I have a feeling has been Kenny's plan for a while now. And honestly, I'm ok with that because I've come to terms with what I believe and that is Kenny Holland sets a price he believes a player is worth and that's that. I think my Wings will compete nicely. We'll probably have a decent regular season and overall a good playoff season... maybe win a round again, who knows, maybe we can squeak out 2 rounds? But a finals appearance? Not for the next 3 or 4 years anyway... at least.
Yes, Im looking forward already to next season. Here is the 2013-14 pre-season schedule for the Red Wings. Sept. 16 at Pittsburgh, 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at Chicago, 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at Boston, 7 p.m. Sept. 21 vs. Boston at Joe Louis Arena, 7 p.m. Sept. 22 vs. Chicago at Joe Louis Arena, 5 p.m. Sept. 25 vs. Pittsburgh at Joe Louis Arena, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 vs. Toronto at Joe Louis Arena, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Toronto, 7 p.m. Nice they scheduled Chicago in, even though its just for pre-season. Going to take some getting used to seeing the Wings in the Eastern Conference. The Regular season schedule has not yet been released just yet, but should be out soon.
If I had to guess on Weiss being a Redwing or something else, I think it's safe to guess he won't be a wing. At least 4 other teams seem to be interested in a player at center with the room to make a deal. Who knows how all the teams scout the guy anyway? I think 1 in 5 is the liklihood of Detroit making a competitive bid on him, even though I think he makes Detroit more likely to win stuff. Brunner saying he wants to stay in Detroit. He'll be on a multi year deal. I see much more risk in keeping Brunner than trying to get many free agents. The league hasn't even adjusted to him yet. If they're going to pay 3+ for him for 3 or more years, I'm really going to wonder why the let the hooter go.
Im ready for all the -1's Ill get when I start laying into Holland after this offseason. no way does he get this team setup for the Eastern Conference. this finesse, run n gun crap wont fly over there and he'll find out in short order if it doesnt get addressed. Brunner for 3 is a joke but it wont suprise me. No Nill n no Scotty for the first time ever for Kenny, I expect......very little. for once let me be pleasantly suprised Kenny Im begging!
I agree, Weiss isn't coming to Detroit. There will be plenty of interest but I highly doubt Detroit is serious about him. As for Brunner, I think Kenny will easily be willing to pay 3+ for him. In my opinion there is one problem and that problem is I think Brunner sometime in the next week or so is going to sign one of those WOW deals where we spend a couple pages talking about how overpaid he is. Just a feeling....
No -1's from me buddy, you can be sure about that. One correction though, I think from a physical standpoint the Wings might be better off then you think. Their finesse players like Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Franzen aren't afraid to get dirty. Their 3rd and 4th line guys aren't afraid either. The Wings success or lack of success will hinge on their defense. Ericsson and Kronwall aren't afraid of the rough stuff. Lashoff, Brenden Smith and DeKeyser are likely to get craploads of playing time next year and are the wildcards. But all are capable of playing any way the opposition want to play it. I don't think the Wings are nearly as weak in that area as they used to be. BUT, don't get me wrong. They need to get tougher and play a little tougher... all I'm saying is I don't think they'll be intimidated like you think. As for Kenny.... don't hold your breath waiting for any big moves. I'm sure as hell not holding mine.... If I'm wrong and he makes some big moves I'll be the first one to give him credit. But aside from supposedly trying at the last second to overpay for Suter and Parise who I didn't even want on the Wings for 90 million dollars I haven't seen much from Kenny the last couple years. For this year he can almost get away with doing next to nothing but next season there are only 9 skaters on the roster signed to deals so he'll have to make some moves, like it or not.
I agree with what you said 69 and your one of the few that can be objective when it comes to Holland and the Wings. I know Datsyuk and Zetterberg can handle themselves but they are the franchise and shouldnt have to. I dont want them fighting their own battles and risk getting hurt. I want them scoring goals and focusing on being the great players they are not the extra crap starts shouldnt have to deal with. Ive never understood the logic of letting your biggest investments be hung out to dry time and time again. good post though
