you confuse me, 69. this overpay thing is a common theme when u discuss contracts, but it seems to me that it's a fact of life. tons of players are overpaid (by MY way of thinking) - but when every team does it, how can the wings expect to remain competitive without doing it themselves? we can't pull rabbits out of a hat endlessly.
Poetry on skates. I will miss him in the shootouts, but at least he can still be the ballerina 5 on 5. How's that lawsuit going btw?
He shouldn't matter one way or the other. If they sign him for 4, the cap hit will be affordable. I'm not sold on him for what he probably expects to get paid. He's not a core player and should not be a priority. Choosing to sign or not sign Weiss would be prioritized over Brunner. Cross that bridge AFTER a decision on Weiss is made. I think they will I don't think he'll be arbitration eligible. Bridge contract for that young man, nice and cheap. By that time, Weiss will just blend in as the cap will probably be much bigger. I took him into consideration. Good question, I'm thinking no, but we'll get a better idea this offseason if the trends are going to change. 1 dimensional player and Babcock will keep it that way in my opinion. He got Detroit, he's not getting a huge payday after 1 full year.
Lulz, I agree with what you said. And yes, I can see Weiss being more effective then Fil. The problem is the Wings were paying Fil I think around 3.5 million per season? Weiss could cost 6.5 to 7..... so my question is this, is he twice the player?
Lulz I came to terms a very long time ago with contracts in sports and how stupid they've become. I've actually on behalf of players with fans on CBS multiple times because sometimes fans confuse money with the ability of the player. A great example is Bryan Campbell. Overpaid? Yes. But a great skater and a really good hockey player who makes anybody's top 6 and most team's top 4. Not "worth" 7 million dollars but if you're the team losing him you don't replace him easily. As for Weiss and my overpayment argument, maybe I just don't know enough about him. Maybe he IS worth 7 million per season long term. And even if he's not if the Wings can't get a better player then him for less then nothing I say matters because paying less to get better value doesn't always make a team better.
He's not worth 7 million a year. UFAs almost always get at least 10-25% more than they're worth. You get the return in the standings and then you hope he keeps the depth from rising too fast allowing for cheaper extensions on a couple guys. If Nyquist or Tatar get more ice time and net 18-25 goals, the dynamic is much different than if they were kept off of pp units and lost some prime offensive icetime they would be getting had Weiss (or other top 6) not been there. It doesnt' work out that clean all the time, but I think you get my point. Most importantly, Fil is leaving, Weiss is better in both zones, the cap looks to be rising, there aren't many opportunities to land top4/top6 help anymore. Rookies and young players fall on their face as often as they meet the ridiculous expections put on them. It's really tough to find players of that caliber, even though I don't consider Weiss a game changer.
Don't get me wrong. I completely understand that UFA's in basically every sport are overpaid by sometimes a significant amount of money. In certain sports with hockey being one of them UFA's actually deserve in some cases to be overpaid because being under team control for so long means being underpaid for years for a lot of players. There are a lot of UFA's I wouldn't mind overpaying to see play in Detroit. My only problem with Weiss is he comes from a crappy team. I didn't want any part of Rick Nash for the same reasons I'm afraid of Detroit overpaying for Weiss. Players from crappy teams are a crap shoot. How do they play in games that matter? What do they do with media that could be more aggressive then they are used to? How do they react the first time a coach on their new team disciplines them or demotes them in any way? There are things the Weiss's and Nash's of the NHL didn't have to deal with on crappy teams they have to deal with a lot on good teams. But if my only choice is Fil or Weiss, then yes I'll take Weiss. But i'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about signing him.
Are the Wings planning on buying out Samuelsson and/or Bertuzzi? I haven't heard anything on that front but it would be very helpful for the summer.
Weiss is much better than Fill IMO. hes gonna get paid after next year, let him bust his hump to earn that next payday it only benefits the Wings in the short term. If he wants something outrageous(which he probably will) then you decide next summer if hes worth it. the market will change with the salary cap shrinking so his demands may fall on deaf ears somewhat. someone is always there to overpay but it doesnt have to be the Wings. its really a win- win for us
He's getting paid this summer. Nash would be a face of the franchise, he would come with a cap hit, the need to re-sign him, and depth would be worse with the franchise. With Weiss, detroit only loses cap space which they can part with the next 2 or 3 seasons. They aren't hugging the cap and shouldn't be. Most of the really good UFAs the next couple years will have lots of the big spenders taking shots at landing those players. This being a down cap year, the bidding war should be much less ridiculous. I think it's about as low risk as it gets for a quality veteran top 6/ almost top line, forward. All good concerns, keep in mind Weiss has more than a decade experience and isn't coming in to be a leader or face of the franchise like Nash. He has a book on him. If there are any concerns there, Detroit knows about it and they won't even make a serious bid for him. I would be more concerned about not filling in Fil's role. Waste cap space on somebody or else the team takes a step back (I'm not sold on the kids yet) and Z, Dats, Mule, and Kronwall get another year older. The bidding war for FAs will probably be much crazier next year and the year after than it will be now with all the teams under a cap crunch.
He's getting paid this summer. hes under contract until next year. are you thinking sign n trade? I would be more concerned about not filling in Fil's role. this is the only part of this whole equation Im not worried about. hes a better skater, has a better shot and is more involved physically(which isnt saying much). hes a solid PK guy and havent looked at the numbers for this past year but hes good in the faceoff circle too. Weiss getting an awful lot of pub here
lol sorry, missed this one. i'm gonna guess this isn't an easy change, but i'll pass it along to the coding crew. as for the thanks thing - thank yourselves. *DRINK*
What do you mean they only lose cap space which they can part with the next 2 or 3 seasons? From what I understand teams only have this summer and the summer of 2014 to use the 2 amnesty buyouts but after that are stuck with any contract they've agreed to unless they buy a player out and take the appropriate cap hit. Are you saying the amnesty buyouts go beyond 2014 ??? If so, fantastic and I take back everything I said about being afraid to pay Weiss 7 million for 6 years. If they can dump the deal 3 years later then give him 8 million for all I care.
