  7. thanx Lulz for helping out Mr Commodore. there were a few things I did like about CBS and wouldnt mind seeing it here if possible. how about having a favorites list for posters. or also maybe a scoring system that allows more than a +1. I like the scoring system but some posts are worth more than a +1, and some are worth more than -1. Im sure theres a few that would like to give me more on the latter but thats ok. i really like this site just wondering how much tinkering we can do.your the higher up here see what the powers that be think. if nothing else thanx for making the hockey group what it is here and giving us somewhere to post. much appreciated

I don't know how to rate anything out of Florida. He's 30 now too, so you never know how quickly or slowly a forward starts to break down. I wanted him on Chicago for a long time, but not anymore because of the contract he's going to get.

I think he's an excellent 2C but not a good 1C. Not sure Detroit is a good fit since he's small and not very physical, but since they're losing Filppula, I think they have to make an offer to him. Legitimate top 6 forwards aren't available often, so if the scouts think he'll be good for half his contract, I think you have to take a shot at him.

It's going to be tough for Kenny to win a bidding war. On the other hand, many of the kids coming up will be RFAs and cost-controlled for years. It will certainly take the sting out of the contract. After 2014 there will be a big hike in the cap, more buyouts used, and a bidding war for UFAs may be suicidal for some gms. If Kenny has the room, I think it's acceptable to go 6.5+ x 7. It'll be a bad contract at the end of the day, but given what I think about the following year, I think it would be ridiculous to take a shot in a bidding war then. Grab the top 6 player now I say. Don't take the gamble on Horton, he has some rough miles on him.

  10. After doing some thinking I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you and say that as a Wings fan I want no part of Weiss at all. Or I should say I want no part of Weiss at anywhere near that kind of cap hit for 7 years. Yes, I think he's a legitimate top 6 forward right now and no, as you pointed out top 6 forwards aren't available very often. But in my opinion there are a few major problems when it comes to signing Weiss to a huge money long term deal.

    1) The cap hit is way too high for a 30 year old player. Half way through the contract is useless and the Wings won't be able to buy him out without being penalized. The compliance buyouts won't likely help the Wings at all over the next 2 seasons because the big money players on Detroit aren't likely going anywhere. I can't see Detroit using the compliance on Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen, Kronwall or Howard in 2014. As a matter of fact I don't know if Detroit will use either of the compliance buyouts available at all. So if they sign Weiss to a crazy deal, where do the Wings cut corners to make this work? Yes the cap should go up, but so will salaries, even the RFA's will get significant raises.

    2) In I believe 10 years Weiss has a total of 7 playoff games under his belt. In my opinion 6.5 * 7 should be reserved for either a young star player or a veteran who is proven to be effective when it counts the most. Weiss is neither....

    3) Finally, I don't like Weiss's size or soft game. As much as the Wings were always considered to be a skilled team with finesse players they actually became a little tougher and more gritty over the years, thus the success they had in the playoffs in the past. Even this year they were pretty gritty and played some tough playoff hockey when they needed to the most and put on a good show for us fans. Weiss isn't that kind of player.

    I vote for the Hawks to spend the 6.5 * 7 :)

For me, it has more to do with the contracts coming up. Nyquist, Smith, Kindl, Dekeyser, Tatar, lots of depth players, and a couple other kids that stick will be cost controlled for a number of years moving forward. Detroit is going to have the space and it's going to be at least 2 more offseasons before they have a chance to fill a top 6 slot without losing tangible assets. I'm expecting a huge surge in the cap because of strong ownership, stable CBA, olympics, and a number of other factors. Whatever Weiss signs for now, a top 6 in 2 years will be really nasty and then Kenny will also be dealing with an extension to whichever kids establish themselves as core players. In other words, I think picking up a top 6 (I think Weiss will still be there at 33, 34, maybe 35) will be a much smaller gamble than signing a top 6 later. Besides, you have to take advantage of Mule, Z, and Dats before they slide off. Kenny stuck to them, he should ride them out in my opinion.

I agree with the concern, but is it worse than trusting a bunch of young dmen and forwards? He doesn't have to be a leader.

I don't like it either. Since Filppula was good enough, i think Weiss is good enough. He is sound defensively, and I think that offsets much of the risk.
They have their own issues when it comes to building the roster. 2-C types won't be on the menu for Chicago for a couple years I think. I was screaming at Stan to lump KHayes, Beach, Bolland, and other minor Dale favorites (including a bunch of picks) together to snag Weiss the last 2 years. Chicago fans beat me up for suggesting I move Bolland the last 2 offseasons and Stan wasn't taken my calls. When I finally stalked him at home, he thought I was a meth-head because of the ripped clothes and bruises from getting my arse kicked, and then he gave me his left over bagel and a few quarters and told me "good luck".

  12. the flip side of this is: fil plays soft and small too. i don't see weiss as being any worse in this respect. it's not like he'd be replacing messier.

  13. Weiss is a better player than Filppula. Replacing him is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

  17. Ok, I know where you're coming from now. But there are a couple of questions and things that could happen that could be game changers for the Wings when it comes to contracts like the one Weiss is about to sign somewhere. One, you didn't mention Brunner. What if the Wings have to overpay in a big way to hold onto him? And Dekeyser is another. He's young and he looked extremely poised out there right before he got hurt. If he has a nice season next year, do the Wings have to overpay him to keep him? Considering so many teams pursued him out of college, do they break their unwritten rule of signing young RFA's ? I'm not sure Dekeyser will end up falling into the "cost controlled" category... just a feeling I have. I'd be delighted if they can hold onto him for the regular 2 year 5 million dollar deals kids at his age have been getting... but I don't know if that's going to happen.

For the record, I'm not one of the Wings fans who thinks Fil is worth 5 million dollars a year for 6 or 7 years, much less the 6.5 to 7 we're talking about Weiss possibly signing for. So I'm not really comparing the two players at all. If I was to compare Fil at 5 or 5.5 that he supposedly wants to Weiss at 6.7 or 7 I'll take Weiss in a heartbeat.
