Evgeni Svechnikov scored the only goal of the shootout in his NHL debut, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night.

In the seventh round of the tiebreaker, Svechnikov went to his backhand and slid the puck between the pads of Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson.

 

That was one of the most intense OT periods I've ever seen. I'm very happy that the Wings got the 2 points in my final visit to the Joe. Dingy, cramped, even dirty; true. But the Joe just oozes hockey ambiance.


BTW, WTF - the Wings are 9-0 this year in the SO!?

DETROIT ??The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with free agent goaltender Matej Machovsky on a one-year contract beginning in 2017-18.

Machovsky, who participated in the Red Wings? development camp in July 2016, has spent the past four seasons playing in the Czech Republic?s top professional league for HC Plzen. In 178 appearances since 2013-14, he has compiled a 94-84-0 record with a 2.23 goals-against average, a 0.923 save percentage and 14 shutouts. The 6-foot-2, 187-lb., netminder led the Czech Extraliga in save percentage (0.936) as a first-year pro in 2013-14 alongside a career-best 1.67 goals-against average and six shutouts. In 2015-16, he posted a personal-best 26 wins and ranked eighth among goalies who played in 25-or-more games with a 2.43 goals-against average, while finishing third with a 0.920 save percentage. Machovsky?s club reached the semifinals in the Czech Extraliga playoffs, where he led the league with a 0.932 save percentage. He also represented the Czech Republic at the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia but did not see game action. This season, Machovsky owned a 21-25-0 record and improved on his goals-against average (2.25) and save percentage (0.925), while adding two shutouts.

 

Detroit signs Czech d-man?Sulak

The Red Wings have added some depth on defense.

On Wednesday, the club announced it has signed Czech rearguard Libor Sulak to a two-year, entry-level deal. Sulak, 23, is fresh off representing the Czechs at the World Hockey Championship and, prior to that, spent the last two years playing for Znojmo Orli of the Austrian League.

There, he was named the league?s rookie of the year in 2016, and followed that up with a career-high 10 goals and 28 points in 54 games last season.

It?ll be interesting to see if he can push for minutes in Detroit next season. Currently, the club has six d-men under contract ? Mike Green, Danny DeKeyser, Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson, Nick Jensen and Ryan Sproul. Xavier Ouellet is also in the mix, but a restricted free agent.

The Red Wings also signed ?16 first-rounder Dennis Cholowski to his ELC last month, and he played one game for their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Bert's getting a real loooooong look at Training Camp this year. The Red Wings want him up and in a uni ASAP. I like his game, he was one of my favs to watch play in GR this year.

Hopefully the young D works out too (Schetsnikov). The Calder Cup was good experience for the Wings Juniors because it was a really long season. Plenty of extra PT and people watching their game.

Jarred looke decent in goal too... another area that needs some real close attention.

every draft is different but you gotta love having all those 3rd rounders.

 

The Red Wings' decision to expose Petr Mrazek in the expansion draft over Jimmy Howard just adds to the intrigue for the team going into the 2017-18 campaign.

Vegas might take Mrazek given the 25-year-old's potential, but he's coming off a down season where he posted a 3.04 GAA and .901 save percentage in 50 games. He also comes with a $4 million cap hit, so it wouldn't be surprising if the Golden Knights look elsewhere for their goaltending needs. However, the Red Wings decision to expose Mrazek not only suggests that he's not the clear number one goaltender for 2017-18 - which isn't surprising given the season he had - but also that Detroit might not see him as its goaltender of the future anymore. If the Red Wings were convinced that Mrazek would be their best option in the long-term, then they would have probably protected him over the 33-year-old Jimmy Howard even if Howard was coming off a stronger campaign. As things stand though, Mrazek's future is somewhat murky. Mrazek can become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2017-18

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today announced the home opener for the 2017-18 regular season, the franchise's 92nd campaign in the National Hockey League, is set for Thursday, Oct. 5 when the Red Wings host the Minnesota Wild. The 7:30 p.m. showdown will mark the first-ever regular season game at Little Caesars Arena, the soon-to-be-opened, state-of-the-art facility located in The District Detroit, a transformational sports and entertainment development which is also home to the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Lions.

The Red Wings have won four-straight home openers, including last season's 5-1 win on Oct. 17, 2016 versus Ottawa, which featured a hat trick by defenseman Mike Green. Detroit holds a 50-31-9-0 record all time in home openers, finishing with a 22-12-2-0 mark during their time at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings have never opened their home schedule against the Wild, but did take on the Minnesota North Stars in 1982-83 (3-3 tie) and 1985-86 (6-5 loss).

Promotions for the home opener and events celebrating the opening of Little Caesars Arena will be announced at a later date. The complete Red Wings 2017-18 regular season schedule will be revealed live on NHL Network on Thursday, June 22 at 3:00 p.m.
