Kenny is going to be a busy man. With a new arena bound to give a boost to sales, I wonder if he'll go "tank command" or if ownership does what they did with the Tigers creating an unsustainable but competitive team in the short term. Looking at what they have, what needs to happen in terms of rounding out a roster, and the time it will take to fix the problems. The circumstances seem great to blow the thing up...but that's just me.
Holland is going to be forced to make changes, but you'll never hear the words blowup or rebuild in his retoric. The Tigers right now are strapped financially and are going to have to trade some key, core players this Winter. The scuttlebutt is they may be even thinking of cutting big money contracts like Miggy or Verlander. Im not a fan of that at all. I think the Tigers need a core and an identity just as well as the Red Wings. The Wings, in my opinion are going to have to get a defense going or they will never amount to anything. Its been a run and gun start to the season, but i dont know if thats just a phase and if it is sustainable. They must address the D and do it in a way that doesnt put them in the hole fiscally.
I think Wings fans are sophisticated enough to understand and accept that some real pain could bring the gain needed. And, to not accept that would be delusional. I think fixing this properly without considerable pain is much easier said than done. Remember that there are a lot of teams that need the same fix. That's going to drive competition for D. I'm not suggesting you need to blow things up completely a la Buffalo. But a year or three sitting out the postseason isn't the worse thing in the world either.
If I recall correctly, Ilitch tried to fastforward the Tigers into a winning team to coincide with the new park and the experiment flopped on it's face. I'm really curious if they're going to learn from the past example with the Wings. The more I think about it, the less likely I think they would absorb the bad year when they will sell 10s of thousands of tickets and make a killing in sponsorships just because it's a new facility in a good market. That Nielsen contract and that Green contract really get in the way. Having to get around Howard, Ericsson, Kronwall, Mule, and Helm kind of eliminates hope that they would tear it down, at least to only a few players.
The worst is that Kenny has already lost so many prospects that could have been added to entice a team to take on bad money, like Quincey before, or Mule a couple years ago, etc.
Tonights lineups vs Bruins... Nyquist-Nielsen-Larkin Tatar-Zetterberg-Abdelkader Athanasiou-Helm-Sheahan MIller-Glendening-Ott Vanek still out (day-to-day)... Jimmy Howard looks to be the starter.
