    Wings 5, Bruins 1

The Ott, Miller and Glendenning line did the damage.

Are Wings fans onboard with making Steve Ott a fan favorite yet?

How many young players has he hurt so far with his sandpaper style of play?

    Just wondering.

From what ive gathered through observation, a lot of Wings fans are welcoming him with arms open wide. I think that stems from a long, long period of time without a gritty player and from seeing guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg get tossed around like rag-dolls. There has been little answer in Detroit, for a few seasons now, when other teams take advantage of the physical play against the Wings. Ott might help keep things balanced.

For me personally, I like the gritty type players who can score, but not the cheap shot stuff. I like David Backes type players on the team.

I heard Ott was good in the locker room and with getting along with players... what kind of input or assessment can you make on this?

I remember seeing Ott play in Dallas (coincidentally against the Wings) and thinking "that guy's a pest". Part asshole, perhaps, but I like players that force the other team to pay undo attention to that player.

I loved it when he was traded to Buffalo. But most of that was based on subtracting Derek Roy (perhaps the biggest pussy in the history of the NHL) from the roster.

Ott became a fan favorite in Buffalo very quickly. That surely was not due to his stellar stats. Buffalo is very blue collar and his work ethic* quickly ingratiated him as "one of our own". (* I am not convinced that he actually works that much harder, but his frenetic motion on the ice makes him appear to be working very hard.) After awhile, however, you start to wonder if he would not be better off bottling that energy and using it in pursuit of more satisfying results; such as G's & A's, for example.

I believe that his lockerroom contributions are not to be dismissed. He has charisma in a grungy "I'm willing to dirty myself" kind of way.

In the end, I do not think it's coincidental that his teams have done dick. His attributes have value, but those merits do not generally contribute to winning hockey games.

If I were a Wings fan, I'd enjoy him for now, but eagerly anticipate the day that he's a former Wing.

There was an article on him in the Detroit Free Press... Otter said he couldnt wait to show the Red Wings what he can do and is very greatfull to be in Detroit.

Honestly, as deep as the Wings are at the forward position, especially center, im surprise a bit by the signing in the first place.

BLACKHAWKS CRUISE PAST SLOPPY RED WINGS

The Chicago Blackhawks had no problem handling the Detroit Red Wings in a 6-1 win.

Jimmy Howard was hung out to dry a lot, but im still concerned for goaltending in Detroit... and the defense... and the scoring... and the special teams... the whole kit n kabootle.

Martin Frk claimed by Carolina on waivers from Red Wings

DETROIT ? Martin Frk became a casualty of the Detroit Red Wings' crowded roster Sunday.

Frk was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Defenseman Nick Jensen, who like Frk lost his waiver-exemption status this season, cleared waivers. Forwards Eric Tangradi and Mitch Callahan and defenseman Brian Lashoff also cleared, as they have in the past.

These players have been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins, as has goaltender Jared Coreau.

Red Wings send down Anthony Mantha, keep Andreas Athanasiou

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings assigned forward Anthony Mantha to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday while keeping Andreas Athanasiou on their season-opening roster.

The club also placed defenseman Niklas Kronwall on injured reserve.

Final season-opening rosters must be submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Red Wings also learned Tuesday that Teemu Pulkkinen was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Wild.

Can't believe how many value holding prospects Kenny has lost for almost nothing.
Many of these guys could have been packaged for salary retained deals. The contract slots themselves have value as lots of teams have given up assets to move contracts to save money (AHL contracts can cost too) and gain slots to sign other players.

It's been an asset management disaster over there.

  16. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

Totally agree. Its alarming to see all the talent lost for nothing that could have been utilized better.

No one can tell me the line of Mantha, Pulkinnen and Fyrk arnt comparable to Ott, Miller and Glendenning. When I look at it like that i shake my head.

I, personally, like the younger line better. But the old guys form the OMG line. That counts for something these days. Just trying to get in Kenny's head.

  18. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I'm not sure about the talent.
It's the years of Kenny believing they were close (based on conference following last season) and sitting on piles of assets that weren't going to be part of a "win now" team.

It's just so many players that were never going to be more than depth. It's not just all the guys lost for nothing, it's the contract slots burned keeping Ferraro and Andersson and Lashoff and Callahan and Jarnkrok (etc) under contract for so long. Clogged up everything, for not short or long term gain. I'm not suggesting that he should be Stan Bowman, who throws everything away as soon as they don't project as a top 9 fwd or top 5 def in the next 3 years, but he could have done a little something with more than prospects. Jarnkrok was only moved because he was going to be lost on waivers the next fall.

I just don't get it, he was talking about contending and keeping the streak alive. Loading up on depth players does neither.
I'm not going to go off on it for two pages, but the voices want me to.

But, if you did, i would read it.

I just see a lot going out of the system for nothing, when nothing is coming in.

The Wings (Holland) let players go for nothing and at the same time dont make big splashes in Free Agency... nothing is getting done to advance and strengthen the system. The house of cards is crumbling.
