  1. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

Eliotte Friedman of HNIC has reported that the Red Wings apparently have contacted the Florida Panthers regarding free-agent center Stephen Weiss. The Wings are interested in trading for his rights if Florida wants to make a deal.

I dont know much about this guy right now...maybe some of you do. What do you think? Would he be a good or better fit in Detroit?

Weiss is a good (fast) skater with decent scoring skills in the right environment. he is a 50 pt player even on a crappy Panthers team. in Detroit, he should fare much better.

  3. replacement for filppula?

  4. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

I think so...thats how Im understanding the situation to be.

  5. Stephen Weiss was injured for most of this season and only played 17 games. Prior to that his injury history wasn't extensive at all, though.

He was a 50/60 point player on the Panthers the four seasons prior to this one, but I wouldn't expect more than that if he's with the Wings next season. He was on the first line with the Panthers; he wouldn't be with the Wings.

I'd still endorse the move if the compensation is right. Giving up draft picks wouldn't bother me much considering the players we have in the minors right now. Many of them will be wearing a Wings sweater on a regular basis sooner rather than later, including three or four next season.

  6. Weiss is solid, Id take him over Fill. hes got a good all around game and is an ideal number 2 center. little more sandpaper and much quicker. havent looked at the salary cap hit for him but Val is gonna get a raise(not sure how much he really deserves) but maybe itll work out for everyone

  7. Weiss' cap hit will likely be around the same as it was the past several seasons with the Panthers ($3.1 million), maybe a little more. I'd guess Filppula will get something like $25 million over six years (~$4.2 million cap hit). Even if Weiss' cap hit ends up being more than Filppula's I think he's a better player anyway.

  8. Cap geek shows Wiess will be a UFA after next season so he'll be motivated to get that next contract and hes the type of player if hes paired up with a good winger then he could have some big numbers in store. hed look good next to Franzen if the mule actually puts forth an effort all year. I think this is a good move if it happens. Weiss used to do some PK too, you put him and Helm on your top 2 PK units and thats a lot of speed to contend with

  9. *Game 6 :[ Oops

I stand by 11-0, though. The Griffins will outshoot the Crunch 68-23 and hit the post 14 times.

    From NHL.com:

Sure glad that Pavel is remaining with the Red Wings. Still has plenty left and is one of the most exciting and skilled players to watch.

    Its a done deal :)

  12. OUTSTANDING. MLive is reporting it's 3 years, $23 million. :D

  13. I absolutely love Datsyuk, he's an unbelievable talent and definitely capable of being productive for 4 more years in the NHL. My problem is where some players take a small cut towards the end of their careers Datsyuk''s cap hit actually increased. In a hard cap league like this I was hoping and praying for a better price then that. But it is what it is..... all done !!!

As for the Kenny doubters, I've certainly been one of them the last couple of years. I wanted him to trade both Fil and Jimmy instead of losing them to free agency for nothing. Jimmy proved me wrong with an awesome job in the playoffs. Fil on the other hand proved me right because he was just as soft and as weak in the playoffs as he has always been. I can't see how Holland signs him and now he will basically get shit for a player who was marketable and who didn't contribute anything at all in this years playoffs.

Stephen Weiss is an UFA on July 1st. I like the idea of trading for his rights but there is a problem and that problem is going to be MONEY. I highly doubt Weiss signs for much less than 5 million dollars per season. Way too many teams need centers in this league so he's gonna get a nice raise from the 3 million he was raking in. Brunner is an important player and he's an UFA and is certainly going to get some serious money too. Andersson also needs to be signed and so does Nyquist and Brenden Smith.

Holland has around 10 million dollars to work with right now.... I'd like to see how he gets a good number 2 center ( Weiss), Smith, Nyquist, Andersson and Brunner signed for 10 million dollars in total. IF somehow all 5 of the above players are on the Wings roster by training camp I'll be the first one to give Holland props because that would be one heck of a magic mathematical trick.

  14. Can't see Weiss raking in less then 5 million dollars. When a guy like Grabovski who isn't even as good as Weiss can get 5.5 per season I can't imagine Weiss's people take much less then 5. Just can't see it happening. Fil is a goner. Hopefully if Holland trades something for the rights to Weiss he can get something in return for Fil's rights to at least make up the difference. I'm pissed enough that Holland didn't trade Fil at the deadline. If it's going to cost the Wings draft picks to replace Fil instead of getting a return on him a couple months ago that's gonna bug me even more. I read somewhere a while back that Fil wants at least 5.5 per season for 6 years.

  15. what i'm about to say is not about fil, or his salary.

didn't u also read that datsyuk was gone after next season?

  16. If he expects to get that kind of contract with the crappy season he just had he's either drinking too much of his own Kool-Aid or a team is going to grossly overpay for him. He's not worth $4.5 per season.

Weiss is going to be pricey. Just turned 30, should be a perfect Wing. Wonder if going to a "big-boy" franchise will make him greater or crappier.

Datsyuk hit going to sting sooner rather than later but still an awesome talent.

I think Weiss gets max years and 5.75+ I'm thinking 7 years and 42 million ish or else a very short and very expensive short term deal since he might want two contracts with the cap likely to go up after next year.

Cullen a solid, marginally healthy backstop for somebody next year. I see him in Detroit or Chicago as a stopgap.

What does Putin and Medvedev say about Datsyuk's extension?

    "DAH!"
