DETROIT ? The Detroit Red Wings have signed Drew Miller to a one-year, $1.025 million contract, bringing back a valuable role player and penalty killer. Miller, 32, will look to rebound following an injury-plagued season in which he was limited to 28 games (one goal, one assist, minus-5). He suffered a broken jaw on Dec. 3 on a hit from Arizona's Klas Dahlbeck and missed 14 games. In his second game back, on Jan. 10 in Anaheim, he suffered a season-ended knee injury. Miller's left ACL required major reconstructive surgery. He expects to be ready for the start of training camp. Miller's deal includes performance bonuses, which the club was able to include because he spent more than 100 days on injured reserve. (Mlive)
What a gem, there are performance bonus incentives too?! Why does Kenny do this after a good draft? Yeah, it's not going to get in the way, but what kind of message is that sending. He literally didn't bring anything last year (save one goal and robbed ice time).
I dont understand it myself. Maybe their banking on him being and staying healthy for a full season and running the PK. He's not even a true 4th liner in my book. Its a Million Dollars just thrown around like its nothing... i dont think i like it. Does Helm not signed yet have anything to do with this? Maybe they will try to get the Special Teams PK guys on the cheap.
Just a few FA's the Wings could kick the tires on if they dont land Stamkos... Kyle Okposo, David Backes, Loui Eriksson, Andrew Ladd, Mikkel Boedker. Some decent players and options for them to consider.
Good point about Helm. Maybe that has some to do with it. Maybe they were woefully deficient with special team types but it looks like the problem is on the blueline more than upfront.
Stamkos will be pursued by Red Wings, Holland says Detroit GM would 'absolutely' have interest in pending unrestricted free agent If Steven Stamkos enters free agency, the Detroit Red Wings are one of the teams that will pursue the Tampa Bay Lightning center. "Would we have interest in Steven Stamkos? Absolutely," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told TSN 1050 in Toronto on Wednesday. Stamkos can become an unrestricted free agent Friday but teams have been able to talk to pending unrestricted free agents since June 25. "Part of this process that goes through this week is to reach out to players from a club standpoint, from our standpoint, and tell them about our program and then as the week wears on, the player has to decide which program, cities, teams are of interest to him to further explore, and on July 1 make a decision. ? Stamkos and his representatives are going through a process to decide exactly what they want to do, if they want to go back to Tampa or if they want to explore other teams." The Red Wings opened salary-cap space last week when they traded the contract of forward Pavel Datsyuk, who announced earlier this month that was going to play in the Kontinental Hockey League next season, to the Arizona Coyotes. Datsyuk has a $7.5 million salary-cap charge for 2016-17. (NHL.com)
didnt know Joe Vitale (acquired in the Datsyuk draft deal) is injured and will probably never play again. i dont think his $1.3m due next season will count against the cap but it will be real money paid because its assumed that Vitale's deal is not insured. that money wouldve hurt Arizona much more than Detroit.
25 year old Matt Lorito signs a 2 year, 2 way deal with Red Wings. 54 points in 71 GP for Albany (AHL) last season.
Yeah, at that price and term I think Vanek is a great value. He wants to prove that he can still score; i.e., he's going to be a very motivated player next season. At least that's what Tom said. I think the Wings will be pleased with him.
