Lightning defeat Red Wings, advance to second round

TAMPA -- Ben Bishop made 34 saves, and Alex Killorn scored with 1:43 remaining in the third period to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 1-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Amalie Arena on Thursday and send them on to the second round.

Tampa Bay, which won the best-of-7 series 4-1, will play the winner of the first-round series between the New York Islanders and Florida Panthers. That series is tied 2-2.

Killorn's game-winner came after Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek casually played the puck behind his net. Lightning forward Ryan Callahan hustled to intercept the pass intended for Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson and sent the puck to Killorn, who scored on a redirection from in front of the net.

    The Silver lining is that

Red Wings continued their making it to the playoffs - 25 years.
Red Wings played the Lightning hard...3 of the 5 games were decided by 1 goal.
It is not a done deal that Pavel Datsyuk is gone.
    Andreas Athanasiou (self-explanatory).

yes^, how do you not like that kid? and then you have something real good there w/ Larkin. i think he's on a real short list of the best young players in the league.

sorry for the loss Will, you've got some nice pieces though. Mantha could still be a stud too.
so much depends on Datsyuk for next year.

Im not going to hold my breath.

Just wish him the best and thank him for what he did for the Red Wings.

If Datsyuk leaves, at least it's an excuse for Holland to tank for a year.

They[del] can't[/del] shouldn't enter a new arena in the 18 season with the same plan and model that they've kept for a decade now.

Green, Zetterberg, Mule, Howard, Ericsson, Kronwall, and Weiss will be eating about 33 million of the cap as it stands now....in 2018 when the new arena is open.

Spending that much, with what they have in the system right now, all but precludes them from having a serious shot at contention without massive roster overhaul. I can't imagine ownership will want to wheel a dumpster onto the ice in the new building.

They need an overhaul for sure and I agree with the list you made... thats just not a good thing to have the old vets eating up so much space.

It seems they are trending in a bad direction right now and they have to really get proactive instead of the standing pat stuff. Major changes are in order or they will just continue in a stagnant manner.

I know Blashill has only been there 1 season, but he has made some roster moves that raised some questions with me. For example; why did he go so long without Smith in the lineup, only to put him in in the end, watch him spark the team and then sit him again... i didnt understand that. Some moves with goaltending and on the line pairings are driving me nuts. (short trip too)

Holland has to pull a rabbit out of his hat, Blashill needs to be more consistent and the old guard needs new blood... simple eh? :)

...also said, he's not going to go through a rebuild.

He also said today; if you plan on winning Stanley Cups, your in the wrong league. He's said a lot of confusing things today. Im not sure where he's coming from. Im not sure he knows either.

    Wow did Kenny sound uncomfortable.
Business side of the house has to be more involved imo, can't have another poor presser like this without a coherent message. It's bad for the fanbase and sponsors. Normally it's not as significant, but they have a new arena to fill. Reminds me of when the Hawks moved to the UC, they quickly failed to fill it even though the Hawks were still competitive. Same type of bs talking about success in past years, doesn't do much to improve sales.

Oiler-esque presser as he reminded everybody of his accomplishments.

It was interesting hearing him talk about size.
I do enjoy listening to all of these end of the year press conferences.

At least he admitted that he has to do something more drastic (47 minutes)

Sure took him a while to see the handwriting on the wall. I wonder if he is feeling some pressure on his job from Mr. I?

    He seems perplexed to me.

I just have no idea what Kenny was doing there.

I don't see how he made anything better for the franchise, kind of thing I expect from one of the smaller franchises. He threw out way too much that could show up in stories over and over again the next two years. Admitting to future mistakes before they happen, putting a target on his back if he's unable to make significant moves, telling the fanbase and sponsors they're not a contender (in as many words), saying he thought he was closer to contention than most agreed with over the last several seasons, talking about how he addressed problem areas with very flawed and stop-gap type solutions, etc.

I look forward to seeing how all this plays out next year. I would imagine ownership will be a little less comfortable with things than years past.

He mentioned that he wanted a meeting with them next week.
Going by the conference, I think pressure from above would have been a good thing. I'm not sure there was any external (external to hockey ops) pressure.
