Riley Sheahan stars as Red Wings push for playoffs

DETROIT ? Riley Sheahan had a goal and an assist to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday night in a game with playoff implications for both teams.

Detroit entered one point behind Boston for third place in the Atlantic Division, while Minnesota came in with a five-point lead on Colorado for the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

Dylan Larkin scored on a power play in the first period and then Tomas Tatar put Detroit up 2-0 2:32 into the second period.

After Jonas Brodin scored for Minnesota with 4:18 left in the second, Sheahan got his goal 2:08 into the third.

Mikael Granlund scored for the Wild 9:43 into the third.

Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard had 20 saves, while Devan Dubnyk made 26 stops for Minnesota.

And another 3-2 win for the Wings... keeping pace.

  5. I think we may need to win out to make it this year, meaning we need to win five games in a row -- something we haven't done all season.

I feel the same for the Wings. Those bloody Flyers are making me very angry too.

Wings next games are against the Flyers and the Boston Bruins... this is going to be one hell of a ride.

The easiest path to the Wings 25th straight playoff appearance is to secure 3rd place in the division. Let BOS & PHL duke it out for the last wildcard.

Therefore, as unpalatable as it is, Wings fans should be pulling the hockey team from Philadelphia to beat the HTFBoston.

Fortunately, I'm a Sabres fans and do not have to compromise my principles and can just root for Philadelphia to always lose. Always.

Blackhawks 6-4 over the Bruins. Red Wings lead Bruins by 1 point with same number of games played.

Penguins 6-2 over the Flyers. Red Wings and Flyers tied at 91 points. Flyers now only have played 1 less game than the Red Wings.

It has been a terrific day!

Yeah, today went as well for Detroit as it could have gone. With the way Philly's playing, it's looking like either Detroit or Boston get in with that 3rd division spot. Big finish to the end of the season.

Go DETROIT! Take care of business, and help the hockey team from Boston supplant thtfP as the wildcard team.

I'm rooting for Philly, i don't think the Bruins can overtake the Flyers. i like the scheduling of the Wings coming to Boston on the back end of back to backers.

That is a great point. Red Wings have a tough way to go and so do the Bruins and Flyers too, but back-to-backers will prove what a team is made of, imo.

Red Wings dump the Flyers, 3-0.

    On to Boston.

Detroit takes care of business with a 3-0 win over the Flyers at home.

Detroit has a two point lead over the Bruins (same number of games remaining) and a two point lead over the Flyers (Philly has one more game to play than the Red Wings).

Detroit is at Boston tomorrow - 4/7 - which is huge. If Detroit wins, they would have a 4-point lead with 1 game remaining. If Detroit manages at least to force OT, then the Red Wings would get at least 1-point and still maintain a lead over the Bruins.
